NCSC Warns of Critical Check Point VPN Flaws as Large-Scale Exploitation Is Expected

Dutch NCSC warns of two critical CVSS 9.8 Check Point VPN flaws enabling unauthenticated remote code execution, urging immediate patching before mass exploitation.

The Dutch NCSC warned that CVE-2026-85102 and CVE-2026-85103, both rated 9.8 CVSS, allow unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on Check Point Quantum Security Gateway, Spark Firewall, and Security Management Server deployments when VPN is enabled. CVE-2026-85102 stems from improper certificate trust validation during VPN negotiation, while CVE-2026-85103 is a heap-based buffer overflow in ASN.1 certificate decoding. Check Point shipped emergency updates on September 9, 2026, including R82.10 Take 44, R82 Take 126, and R81.20 Take 166 or later, plus LivePatch for eligible systems. No public exploit code exists yet, but the NCSC rates exploitation likelihood high and recommends restricting UDP ports 500 and 4500 to known peers as a stopgap.

Beyond the Perimeter: Building Resilience Against Cloud and SaaS Supply-Chain Attacks

ShinyHunters exploited an Oracle PeopleSoft zero-day to steal data and extort roughly 100 organizations, including the Council of Europe, for up to $2.3M.

Between May and early June 2026, the ShinyHunters group exploited a critical zero-day in Oracle PeopleSoft across about 100 organizations and 300 instances worldwide, per reports cited by The Register. Stolen records included employee and student personal data, payroll, tax, financial and health information, plus immigration and passport documents. AgentCypher.ai estimates extortion demands of $400,000 to $2.3 million per victim, typically in Bitcoin; the Council of Europe refused to pay. The article uses the incident to argue for Zero Trust, supply-chain risk management, rapid patching, encrypted distributed backups and defined recovery-time objectives.

NIST and CISA finalize playbook to stop token theft and forgery

NIST and CISA finalized NIST IR 8587, a playbook helping federal agencies and cloud providers defend identity tokens against theft and forgery.

The finalized NIST IR 8587 guidance covers protecting token signing keys, verifying tokens, lifetimes, revocation, session management, and dividing security responsibilities between cloud providers and customers. It cites an incident in which foreign actors forged tokens with a stolen commercial signing key to steal more than 60,000 emails from one government agency. It also recommends extending token protections to AI agents and preparing identity systems for a future post-quantum cryptography transition.

Hacking group ‘NightEagle’ targeting China’s high-tech sector expands operations to Russianew

Kaspersky reports the NightEagle espionage group (APT-Q-95) expanded from China-focused targets to Russian companies, backdooring Microsoft Exchange servers with GhostContainer using stolen VPN credentials.

Kaspersky investigated several incidents over the past year at Russian businesses attributed to NightEagle (APT-Q-95), a group active since at least 2023 and previously focused on Chinese defense, semiconductor, AI, and quantum technology targets. Hackers used stolen credentials to access corporate networks through VPNs, targeted Microsoft Exchange servers, and installed the GhostContainer backdoor, believed deployed by extracting Exchange encryption keys and executing the payload in memory via Microsoft's web application framework. The group stored hacking tools in GitHub repositories disguised as legitimate software such as AdobeSync and TrueConf, exploited Active Directory weaknesses for privilege escalation and lateral movement, and targeted domain controllers. Attribution remains uncertain; Chinese researchers previously associated the group with North America.

Coast Guard, FBI board US-bound foreign ships in order to probe for cyberattacks

US Coast Guard and FBI boarded two foreign tankers bound for the US after indications their vessel networks were compromised, investigating possible Iranian involvement.

The Coast Guard and FBI conducted joint offshore security boardings of two commercial ships in the Gulf of Mexico on August 21 and 24 to examine their operational and IT systems following indications both networks were compromised. The vessels reportedly carried oil and natural gas, and one was hacked in the Strait of Gibraltar and lost communications for over 30 hours. No operational disruptions, vessel instability, or environmental impacts have been reported, and authorities are investigating whether Iran or another group exploiting US-Iran tensions was behind the attacks.

GitLab’s critical flaw is already drawing internet-wide probes

GitLab patches two critical flaws (CVE-2026-85706 CVSS 10.0, CVE-2026-87719) as WatchTowr observes internet-wide probing of the unauthenticated file-read bug.

GitLab released emergency patches for two high-severity flaws in Community and Enterprise Editions, urging self-managed operators to upgrade immediately while saying its hosted and Dedicated offerings are fixed or unaffected. CVE-2026-85706 (CVSS 10.0) is a path traversal in the repository commits interface that lets unauthenticated attackers read any file on the server and affects releases 18.7 through 19.1.8 plus the 19.2 and 19.3 lines before patching. CVE-2026-87719 (CVSS 9.9, Enterprise Edition only) lets a logged-in Duo Chat user hide a command in a request that triggers Advanced Search settings and password disclosure. WatchTowr Labs reported it is already watching probes that can trigger the path traversal flaw in a single HTTP request, though CISA had not added either issue to the KEV list as of Friday afternoon.
