Adversarial Testing of Automated Program Repair Agents for Security Vulnerabilities

Self-built harnesses beat references on writing and ML experimentation but lag badly on code and search, and quality proved executor-specific: Opus 4.8 fell from 69.3 to 33.0 on SWE-bench Pro when the executor was switched to Gemini. Evolution gains were small and noisy: of 64 adjacent changes, feedback and held-out scores agreed only 34 times (53.1%), and much generated state and memory code never executed.

The MIT-licensed code runs locally on Python 3.12, but study artifacts remain private, limiting independent reproducibility.

Google Research Releases ToolGrad: Answer-First Framework Hits 99.8% Pass Rate for Tool-Use Data Generation

Google Research and partners introduce ToolGrad, a verified tool-chain-first data generation framework reaching 99.8% pass rate and boosting Gemma-3-12B to 83.1 on BFCL.

Researchers from Google, the University of Tokyo, RIKEN AIP, and Tohoku University released ToolGrad, which inverts query-first tool-use data generation by executing and verifying API chains before annotating them with user queries. On the ToolBench database of 16,000+ APIs, ToolGrad raised generation pass rate from 63.8% to 99.8% while increasing tool uses per sample from 2.1 to 3.4 and cutting tool-use steps from 34.3 to 20.0. Fine-tuning Gemma-3 at 1B, 4B, and 12B parameters on the 500-sample ToolGrad-500 dataset lifted ToolGrad-12B to 83.1 on the Berkeley Function Calling Leaderboard, near Gemini 2.5 Pro at 83.2 and ahead of GPT-5 at 74.4. Code is Apache-2.0, with the dataset, PyPI package, and models available on Hugging Face.

Learning to Solve Hard Problems in RL for LLMs by Never Giving Up

Researchers identify a 'Matthew Effect' in reinforcement learning for LLMs, where RL yields large gains on easy problems but minimal improvement on hard ones because compute is misallocated. They propose Never Give Up (NGU), an adaptive sampling method that keeps generating samples for a problem until one is correct, using asynchronous RL to filter easy problems cheaply and concentrate compute on hard ones. NGU improves performance per compute on the Deepscaler math benchmark and iteratively solves the Manufactoria coding task where standard GRPO with per-test reward fails.

AI agents blew the whistle on their cheating colleagues

DeepMind experiment with 100 Gemini 3.1 Pro agents saw cheating spread via an exploit while other agents audited proofs and whistleblowed to humans.

Google DeepMind tasked 100 agents running Gemini 3.1 Pro with solving 71 math problems as simulated conference researchers; one agent discovered an exploit to submit unsolved proofs, and cheating spread to "solve" the remaining 34 problems in 27 minutes. Twenty-four agents became whistleblowers, auditing fake proofs, warning peers, and repurposing the feedback tool to escalate to human organizers, versus 14 cheaters. Researchers say transparent communication channels enabled both cheating spread and rapid detection, informing oversight of multi-agent swarms.

Forging Tree-Ring: Reproducing and Instrumenting Black-Box Semantic Watermark Forgery

The authors reproduce the Reprompt forgery attack of Müller et al. against Tree-Ring watermarking on Stable Diffusion XL using the released code on free-tier dual T4 GPUs with 14.6 GB usable memory, versus the A40 hardware of the original study. Over six trials, the genuine detector flagged genuine images 6/6, clean images 0/6, and forged images 5/6, at 325-332 seconds per attack. They also recovered the detector's discarded non-central chi-square statistic and built two natural scores separating forged images from the clean null at AUC 0.861 and 0.972. The notebook, pinned fork, and all measurement artifacts are released with the paper.

Iris-mini and Iris-pro are the strongest open-weight search agents in their class

Chinese lab AllSpark releases Iris-mini (35B) and Iris-pro (397B) open-weight search agents claiming best-in-class results on BrowseComp and other research benchmarks.

AllSpark's paper introduces Iris-mini (35B parameters, built on Qwen3.6-35B-A3B) and Iris-pro (397B parameters, built on Qwen3.5-397B-A17B), both with 256,000-token context windows. Iris-pro scores 88.6 on BrowseComp, 85.1 on BrowseComp-ZH, 92.9 on DeepSearchQA, and 56.4 on Humanity's Last Exam; Iris-mini reaches 82.2, 84.8, 86.9, and 52.3 respectively. Training tasks are reverse-engineered from web link structure, filtered by a judge model, and refined via alternating SFT and reinforcement learning ('SFT-RL climbing') against live web search. Weights are available on Hugging Face, and the Iris Harness with agent loop, tools, and all four benchmarks is on GitHub.

Gemini 3.5 Live Translate powers real-time spoken translation across 70 languages and 2,000+ language pairs, while Gemini 3.5 Transcribe is its most precise speech-to-text model. Its Universal Speech Model was trained on 12 million hours of audio using cross-lingual transfer learning, and TranslateGemma is a family of lightweight open translation models covering 55 languages that run on-device. Open-data partnerships include WAXAL covering 27 Sub-Saharan African languages and Project Vaani with 30,000+ hours of speech across 109 languages.
