Hackers Use Fake Claude and ChatGPT Installers to Infect Mac Users With Password-Stealing Malware

Attackers distribute MacSync macOS infostealer via fake Claude and ChatGPT installers and sponsored search ads, stealing passwords, cookies, keys, and wallets.

SEQRITE reports a malware-as-a-service campaign pushing MacSync, a macOS password stealer, through sponsored search results and fake Claude and ChatGPT download pages. ClickFix-style prompts trick users into pasting a Terminal command that launches a stager, which loads an in-memory AppleScript to harvest credentials. The malware collects browser vaults, Keychain data, SSH keys, session cookies, messaging sessions, and cryptocurrency wallets, then persists via renamed LaunchAgents and can request screen-recording permissions.

Microsoft Tracks MacSync Stealer by Its Behavior, Not Its Domains

Microsoft correlates over 30 rotating domains to track MacSync Stealer, which steals passwords, SSH keys, wallets and AWS credentials.

Microsoft Defender Experts tracked MacSync Stealer, a macOS information stealer, by analyzing recurring behaviors rather than individual domains, linking over 30 domains to the campaign. The infection chain uses the ClickFix social engineering technique, tricking victims into pasting commands in Terminal, then uses curl, AppleScript, and native macOS tools to deploy the payload. The stealer targets Keychain data, browser passwords and cookies, SSH keys, AWS credentials, Kubernetes configurations, and Ledger and Trezor wallet data, staging data before exfiltration via chunked HTTP PUT requests. RST Cloud identified rapid C2 infrastructure replacement after initial public disclosure.

The 12 Best Antivirus Software for Mac, Compared and Priced

GBHackers ranks 12 Mac antivirus products, naming Bitdefender best overall and noting Gen Digital owns Norton, Avast, and Avira.

GBHackers scored twelve Mac antivirus products, ranking Bitdefender first at 8.8/10, followed by Intego, Malwarebytes, and ESET. The piece highlights that Gen Digital owns Norton, Avast, and Avira following the NortonLifeLock-Avast merger, so three of the twelve options share one corporate owner. It advises comparing year-two renewal prices rather than discounted first-year pricing and notes macOS already ships XProtect, Gatekeeper, and automatic malware removal. The 2026 Mac threat model described is infostealers harvesting passwords, cookies, and wallets via cracked software, fake installers, and malicious search ads.

Fake OpenAI Codex download tricks macOS users into installing malware

Cato Networks uncovered a malware campaign using sponsored search ads and fake OpenAI Codex pages to deliver an AMOS-like infostealer to macOS users.

Cato Networks researchers discovered a campaign using sponsored search results and a fake OpenAI Codex download portal on Google Sites to lure macOS users. Victims are instructed to paste a Terminal command that decodes a Base64-encoded URL and runs a multi-stage infection chain ending in a universal Mach-O binary. The delivery chain closely resembles Atomic macOS Stealer (AMOS), and related infrastructure impersonating Claude Code was also found. Risky Bulletin: BEC campaign steals €35 million from French notaries

Hackers stole over €35 million from 500+ French notary offices in a four-year BEC campaign; ANSSI spent two years helping evict the attackers.

A business email compromise campaign breached more than 500 French notary offices — about 7% of all French notaries per the Conseil Supérieur du Notariat — over four years, stealing more than €35 million by phishing initial access and silently modifying wire transfer details. France's cybersecurity agency ANSSI worked for two years behind the scenes to help notaries remove the persistent attackers, who had deep access; officials also feared hackers could issue fake notarized acts such as marriage certificates or forged real estate deals. No forged documents have been found so far, but notaries have added two-factor authentication and in-person requirements for banking details, and banks added extra checks in 2024. The newsletter also notes other incidents, including a $320 million Bitcoin extraction from Blockstream's Liquid Network and a JetBrains Cadence breach via TeamCity servers.

Hackers Target Claude, Cursor and Codex AI Agents to Steal Tokens and Prompt Histories

Gen Digital found infostealers like Amatera and Remus stealing AI coding agent tokens, prompt histories, and MCP configs from infected Windows and macOS machines.

Gen Digital analysts observed Amatera and Remus detections among tens of thousands of protected Windows users over three months, with Amatera targeting Cline and Continue data and Remus targeting Claude, Cursor, and OpenCode. CallbackBeaver added Cursor and Claude to its collection scope with more than 5,000 samples in 30 days, while macOS-focused Djinn Stealer has been associated with Claude, Codex, Gemini, Cline, OpenCode, and Kilo. The stealers harvest access and refresh tokens, prompt histories, and MCP configuration files that can expose source control, ticketing, databases, cloud resources, and sensitive project context for follow-on fraud. Many stealers add targets via remotely managed rules, meaning this is an adaptation of existing infostealers rather than a new vulnerability in the AI tools themselves.

AmnesiaStealer Gives Attackers Live Control of Victims’ macOS Browsers

Jamf Threat Labs analyzed AmnesiaStealer, a Rust-based macOS infostealer spread via fake GitHub pages that also grants live hidden browser control.

AmnesiaStealer is a three-stage Rust infostealer distributed through counterfeit GitHub download pages using the ClickFix technique, a lure shared with Atomic Stealer and MacSync campaigns. It harvests the keychain, 16 Chromium browsers, Apple Notes, Telegram and documents, reusing a password captured via a fake installer dialog. A third-stage stream module clones the victim's browser profile headlessly and lets operators drive the session via Chrome DevTools Protocol, while persistence uses a LaunchDaemon impersonating Apple's com.apple.ReportCrash.agent. 16 Typosquatted RubyGems Packages Steal Browser Credentials and Crypto Wallets

Typosquatted RubyGems packages deliver the StubMaker infostealer, stealing browser credentials, crypto wallets, and Telegram data from Windows developers.

Stolen data is uploaded as a password-protected ZIP to Gofile, with the download link sent over plain HTTP. 13 Malicious Packagist Packages Target Unpatched iPhones to Steal Crypto Wallet Seeds

Trojanized Packagist themes inject JavaScript into Vietnamese streaming sites, exploiting unpatched iPhone WebKit and kernel flaws to install spyware and steal crypto wallet seeds.
