When the prompt becomes the payload: A practical pen-testing guide for GenAI, LLM and RAG applications

CSO Online publishes a practical penetration-testing guide for GenAI, LLM, and RAG applications, covering prompt injection, retrieval poisoning, and tenant isolation testing.

The guide frames LLM applications as attack graphs spanning prompts, retrieval layers, vector stores, tools, identities, and downstream APIs, arguing that conventional web testing misses instruction-vs-data channel risks. It builds on OWASP prompt injection guidance (direct vs. indirect injection) and NIST's 2025 adversarial machine-learning taxonomy, noting that RAG and fine-tuning do not remove injection risk. Recommended practices include documenting trust transitions across components, using canaries and synthetic records to avoid test side effects, running multi-turn and obfuscated injection campaigns, and verifying chains from poisoned documents to observable state changes. It also details testing RAG pipelines via controlled document poisoning across metadata, OCR layers, and code comments, plus cross-tenant isolation checks on retrieved document IDs.

AI spend per employee slumped at top firms in August — summer doldrums or a warning sign?

Ramp data across 70,000 companies shows August AI adoption grew just 0.4% while per-employee spend at top-spending firms fell nearly 10% to $7,205 amid declining token prices.

Ramp's spending data shows 56% of its customers paid for AI products in August, up only 0.4% month-over-month, with spend per employee in the top 1% of firms down almost 10% to $7,205. Average token costs have dropped to $0.68 per million tokens from a 2026 peak of $1.15 in March after price cuts by OpenAI and Anthropic, and the labs have not yet offset the cuts with volume, with customers shifting to cheaper models like ChatGPT 5.6-Terra and Claude Sonnet. The US Census Bureau's broader survey shows only 22% of businesses report using AI, suggesting Ramp's tech-heavy client base overstates adoption, while only 6.4% of AI-spending businesses used model-serving or inference platforms in August.

Deepmind's AlphaGenome Atlas maps every possible DNA change in the human genome

DeepMind's AlphaGenome Atlas precomputes impact predictions for ~9 billion human DNA variants in a 1-petabyte dataset; its AVI score beats CADD in benchmarks

Google DeepMind released the AlphaGenome Atlas, precomputing functional-effect predictions for roughly 9 billion human genome variants (about 27,000 prediction values per variant) in a one-petabyte dataset more than 30 times the size of the AlphaFold database. The accompanying AlphaGenome Variant Impact Score (AVI), a small neural network combining AlphaGenome, AlphaMissense and evolutionary conservation features (18 inputs versus CADD's 150+), outperformed existing tools on clinically classified variants, ranking causal variants in the top 50 candidates for 29.5% of solved GREGoR cases versus 12.5% for CADD. A GREGoR epilepsy case illustrates the impact: AVI elevated a previously unclear DNM1 splice variant that lab experiments confirmed as likely disease-causing. The atlas is available for noncommercial use via web portal, API and a Google Antigravity skill, with a commercial version planned through Google Cloud.

What Makes Adversarial Examples Transfer Across Deepfake Detectors?

A controlled study of 60 deepfake detectors shows adversarial example transfer depends heavily on source-target compatibility, with source averaging understating vulnerability.

The study evaluates adversarial example transferability across 60 deepfake detectors spanning six backbones, two pretraining regimes, and five training-data configurations, using AutoAttack (AA) and Carlini-Wagner with Expectation over Transformation (CW-EOT). Transfer rises sharply when source and target share an exact backbone, architecture family, pretraining regime, or training data, with the dominant factor depending on the attack. Mean attack success rate is 7.21% under AA and 19.52% under CW-EOT for single sources, while a multi-source oracle reaches 64.48% after excluding exact matches, showing source averaging can substantially understate target vulnerability. The authors release 240,000 adversarially perturbed images, pairwise transfer results, detector configurations, and evaluation code.
