Major Cyber Threat Detection Vendors Shift from MITRE to UK Testing Program

SE Labs launched PIVOT, a six-month vendor detection testing program backed by CrowdStrike, Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks and Sophos, as major vendors exit MITRE evaluations.

SE Labs unveiled PIVOT on September 15, a six-month testing program in which its ethical hackers replicate nation-state and criminal attack chains against participating vendor products, with results due January 2027. Broadcom (Symantec/Carbon Black), CrowdStrike, Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks and Sophos have confirmed participation, and Gartner and Forrester analysts will verify the underlying evidence before publication. The launch follows declining participation in MITRE Engenuity ATT&CK Evaluations: Enterprise, which fell from 30 vendors in 2023 to 11 in 2025 after public withdrawals by Microsoft, SentinelOne and Palo Alto Networks.

Hackers hijack HBO Max Reddit account to push malware in ClickFix ads

Hackers hijacked HBO Max's verified Reddit account to run 108 ClickFix ads delivering infostealers and crypto clippers to Windows and macOS users.

Hudson Rock and ADAMnetworks linked the hijacked u/hbomax Reddit account to a campaign they call PasteSwitch, which ran 108 malicious ads over roughly 48 hours pushing sites like hbomaxx.us, codex-craft.com, and code-desktop.com. ClickFix social engineering tricks victims into pasting Base64-obfuscated shell or PowerShell commands into Terminal or Run, delivering MacSync, AMOS helper persistence, Amatera Stealer loaded in-memory, and the AnimateClipper and ZigClipper crypto clipboard hijackers. Windows chains used an MP3/HTA polyglot to create scheduled tasks, disable AMSI, and launch 32-bit PowerShell; fake Ledger, Trezor Suite, and Exodus wallet apps steal recovery phrases. Reddit admins paused the ads, and it remains unclear how the account was accessed.

PAPERMILL Hackers Abuse Signed Notepad++ to Deploy VenomRAT in Tax Audit Attacks

PAPERMILL phishing campaign abuses a signed Notepad++ copy and tax-audit lures to deploy VenomRAT against targets in India.

JUMPSEC tracks PAPERMILL as an emerging cluster whose emails pass SPF, DKIM, and DMARC and deliver tax-audit themed disk images. The mounted image pairs a legitimately signed, renamed executable with a rogue libcurl.dll for DLL sideloading, then uses a Donut shellcode loader to run VenomRAT 6.0.3 in memory with hidden VNC, data-stealing, and file-grabbing capabilities. The loader includes anti-analysis checks and RunOnce persistence, and lures plus China-connected infrastructure overlap with the Silver Fox ecosystem, though attribution remains unconfirmed.

Mythos has made 2026 patching hell. It might make 2027 a breeze

Gartner analyst Craig Lawson argues AI bug-hunters like Anthropic's Mythos have audited major codebases so thoroughly that 2027 could see fewer severe vulnerabilities.

Speaking at Gartner's IT Symposium in Australia, research VP Craig Lawson said AI-driven bug hunting, exemplified by Anthropic's Mythos, is uncovering flaws at unprecedented scale, citing Microsoft shipping over 970 patches in one week and a recent series of CVEs in historically secure OpenBSD. He argued vendors are also using AI to find bugs before release, retiring technical debt and shrinking future zero-day avenues. Lawson predicts 2027 may be the first year with a net drop in vulnerability severity, if not aggregate counts. He also expects AI to enable near-continuous red-teaming and faster fixes, such as generating F5 iRule syntax for virtual patches via Gemini.

Hackers Turn Windows Shadow Copies Into a Tool for Credential Theft and Ransomware

Attackers abuse Windows VSS shadow copies to delete recovery points before ransomware and to extract NTDS.dit/SAM credentials, demanding context-aware detection.

Threat actors are weaponizing the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) for two purposes: destroying local recovery points via vssadmin.exe, wmic.exe, diskshadow.exe, wbadmin.exe, and bcdedit.exe before encryption, and accessing static copies of locked files such as NTDS.dit and SAM for credential theft. Ransomware families tied to shadow-copy removal include Akira, Black Basta, BlackCat, Conti, LockBit, Qilin, RansomHub, REvil, Ryuk, and WannaCry. Huntress's analysis of the Nightmare-Eclipse tool showed the BlueHammer technique chaining a Windows Defender timing issue with a VSS snapshot to dump the SAM database and decrypt NT hashes. Defenders should correlate VSS operations with parent process, hive access, and subsequent encryption activity, and maintain immutable off-host backups.

KREMLIN Banking Malware Bypasses Chrome Security to Steal Banking Sessions

Elastic Security Labs details KREMLIN, a Brazilian banking malware that implants malicious Chrome and Edge extensions by forging Chromium integrity values to steal banking sessions.

Elastic Security Labs tracks the KREMLIN banking malware operation as REF9334, active since at least May 2025 across seven campaigns primarily targeting 12 Brazilian banks. The malware is installed by a victim-run JavaScript loader, achieves scheduled-task persistence, and side-loads a malicious DLL via SentinelOne's SentinelMemoryScanner.exe. It modifies Chrome and Edge Secure Preferences files, enables developer mode, and regenerates Chromium MAC values to silently install extensions, while extracting browser encryption material including the newer App-Bound OSCrypt key. An Ethereum smart contract serves as a dead-drop resolver for C2 config; Elastic disrupted over 1,500 infections via a canary domain.
