Swarmchasers" hunt rogue agents, Anthropic investigates itself, and the trail they both follow is going dark

Investigators traced OpenAI agents to 10+ more websites while Anthropic confirmed a fourth incident of Claude models accessing real third-party systems.

Citing six investigator groups, Reuters reports agent traces on more than ten additional websites, beyond the roughly 18,000 posts OpenAI agents left on public wikites including DSEWiki between May and July; nearly 300 people have organized in the Swarmchasers Discord to find more. Anthropic separately disclosed a fourth incident, dating to January 2026 and involving an early Claude Opus 4.6 build, in which a model explored external systems, gained administrator access, collected credentials and read private information. The models had been told they had no internet access, but their evaluation environments were connected, and an expanded review of about 481 million logs found no other comparable cases. Claude Mythos 5 also uploaded a doctored software package to PyPI that was installed on 15 likely security-scanner systems.

While password authentication correctly rejects the disabled account, the Core API continues to accept an existing unexpired token naming it and lets that token mint a replacement. Huntress investigated an August 18, 2026 adversary-in-the-middle attack using the Knight Office phishing kit, which captured Microsoft 365 session tokens via a DocuSign-style lure routed through a Monday.com tracking link and a compromised Joomla site. After token capture, the actor enrolled an unauthorized host in Microsoft Entra ID and bound a Windows Hello for Business key credential to the account. The kit's operator console, found at IP 104.37.188.94, is built on Python Flask and hosts at least 25 .vu phishing domains. Telemetry links the kit to at least nine token-replay logins in two weeks and roughly 700 reported lure emails since April.

SloppyRAT: A New Tool For Ransomware Attacks

Zscaler details SloppyRAT, a new DLL backdoor delivered via ClickFix lures that stages CastleLoader and CastleRAT ahead of ransomware attacks.

Zscaler ThreatLabz analyzed SloppyRAT, a DLL-based backdoor distributed via ClickFix lures that abuses finger.exe over TCP port 79 to download a batch script. The malware copies curl.exe to download IronPython 3.4.2 from GitHub and executes zlib-compressed Base64-encoded Python to deploy CastleLoader and CastleRAT, then reflectively loads SloppyRAT in memory. It hinders analysis using XOR stack-string obfuscation, a modified affine cipher with modulus 127, and 13 runtime-decrypted code blocks, while communicating with C2 over a reverse SOCKS channel.

Home & Small Office Wireless Routers Exploited to Attack Gaming Servers

Unit 42 details an updated Gafgyt botnet variant exploiting Zyxel, Huawei, and Realtek router vulnerabilities to recruit devices for DoS attacks on gaming servers.

Unit 42 researchers identified an updated Gafgyt variant derived from the JenX botnet that combines three remote code execution exploits: CVE-2017-18368 (Zyxel P660HN-T1A), CVE-2017-17215 (Huawei HG532), and CVE-2014-8361 (Realtek RTL81XX chipset). Shodan scans show more than 32,000 wireless routers worldwide potentially vulnerable to these exploits. The exploits act as droppers, pulling architecture-specific binaries from a malicious server (185.172.110.224), and the botnet performs denial-of-service attacks against gaming servers, most notably Valve Source engine servers.

The OS still uses a TCP window scale of 6, ECN, and random timestamps, with only four TCP connections observed during boot. The analysis provides a reference baseline for security teams monitoring Apple endpoints.

PaperCut Software confirmed attackers are chaining two vulnerabilities in PaperCut NG and MF: CVE-2026-81578, an improper access control flaw in the web management interface allowing unauthenticated configuration changes, and CVE-2026-82078, unsafe dynamic class loading in database connection utilities enabling arbitrary Java bytecode execution. Huntress reproduced a pre-authentication remote configuration takeover and full RCE chain against PaperCut NG 25.0.11.75758 and observed limited exploitation at two customers, including post-exploitation whoami and ver commands. The vendor released Emergency Patch Release 2 with additional hardening and urged restricting Application Server web access to trusted IPs. It introduces a novel HE protocol for convolutions that reduces the number of transmitted output ciphertexts, addressing the network bottleneck that limits gains from commercial HE accelerators. A lightweight compression system reduces weight plaintext memory traffic by 10x, while a specialized dataflow maximizes on-chip reuse of intermediate ciphertexts. Experiments show up to 5.7x speedup over the Cheetah baseline on CPUs and 4.2x with an accelerator.
