Angry Birds: Toy Ghouls’ new toys

Kaspersky tracks ransomware group Toy Ghouls deploying new custom backdoors, mqtt-bird-agent and matrix-bird-agent, using HiveMQ MQTT and Element as C2 channels.

Kaspersky reports that Toy Ghouls (also known as Bearlyfy, Laboo.boo and Feral Wolf), a financially motivated group targeting Russian organizations since 2025, shifted from leaked Babuk and LockBit builders and public GitHub tools to its custom GenieLocker ransomware. In early July 2026 the group deployed two custom backdoors: mqtt-bird-agent 0.1.0 using the public HiveMQ MQTT broker as C2, and matrix-bird-agent 0.1.0 using the Element messenger. The backdoors are delivered via WinRM using Evil-WinRM and WinRM-fs, persist as Windows services, and encrypt their configuration with ChaCha20-Poly1305 keyed to the machine's MachineGuid registry value.

Kaspersky reports three threat clusters targeting Russian enterprises: NightEagle (APT-Q-95), the pro-Ukrainian hacktivist group Hacking Cat, and Toy Ghouls. NightEagle uses compromised VPN credentials and the GhostContainer modular backdoor to fully compromise Microsoft Exchange servers, chaining CVE-2020-0688 exploitation, BlueKeep (CVE-2019-0708), Active Directory vulnerabilities, and DCSync to seize domain controllers. Hacking Cat exploits Exchange flaws including CVE-2021-26855 and CVE-2026-42897 to deliver the Gorilla RAT and multiple Monkey ransomware variants written in Rust, .NET, C++, and Golang targeting Windows, Linux, and VMware ESXi, with some variants acting as wipers that never store the encryption key.

Hackers stole over €35 million from 500+ French notary offices in a four-year BEC campaign; ANSSI spent two years helping evict the attackers.

A business email compromise campaign breached more than 500 French notary offices — about 7% of all French notaries per the Conseil Supérieur du Notariat — over four years, stealing more than €35 million by phishing initial access and silently modifying wire transfer details. France's cybersecurity agency ANSSI worked for two years behind the scenes to help notaries remove the persistent attackers, who had deep access; officials also feared hackers could issue fake notarized acts such as marriage certificates or forged real estate deals. No forged documents have been found so far, but notaries have added two-factor authentication and in-person requirements for banking details, and banks added extra checks in 2024. The newsletter also notes other incidents, including a $320 million Bitcoin extraction from Blockstream's Liquid Network and a JetBrains Cadence breach via TeamCity servers.

Anthropic's latest threat intelligence report covers misuse of Claude Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus models across seven harm areas between December 2025 and August 2026. Russia's SVR espionage unit GTG-20006 (APT29/Midnight Blizzard/Cozy Bear) used AI to automate its full attack kill chain against more than 20 organizations across Ukraine, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and North Africa. A ShinyHunters-linked supply-chain affiliate breached a SaaS provider and dumped over 2,100 Azure AD token sets spanning 40+ corporate tenants in about 34 hours, with AI agents performing nearly all the work. The report also documents five biological misuse cases (chikungunya, H5 avian influenza) and six conventional weapons development cases in China, Russia, and Yemen.

Qwen-Drive 1.0, built on Qwen3.5-4B, combines spatial perception, traffic question answering, and route planning in one vision-language model, adding a bird's-eye-view perception module and a Planning Expert trained via staged fine-tuning and reinforcement learning. The paper finds text-image models do not inherently grasp 3D space; spatial accuracy only improved when the base vision-language model itself was trained on spatial tasks, while avoiding catastrophic forgetting of general knowledge. The cut reinforcement learning-trained version halved road-departure rate in simulation from 24% to 12%, and the model beats specialized driving models in most of Qwen's benchmarks, but its explanations sometimes conflate causes like distant red lights and crossing children, and results partly rest on self-designed tests. The work follows prior findings from PaLM-E and a UC Santa Cruz adversarial sign attack on DriveLM showing VLM driving models' reasoning and spatial gaps.

E4del and PINHOLE RATs Turn FTP Banners Into Dead Drops for Malware Commands

Researchers identified two new RATs, E4del and PINHOLE, using FTP banners as dead drop resolvers to fetch C2 commands via ClickFix-style lures.

E4del is a Node.js-based RAT hidden in a digitally signed Electron application masquerading as Discord, with tiered-jitter beaconing, reverse shell, screenshot capture and desktop streaming. PINHOLE is more advanced, using Pinterest, SurveyMonkey and Cloudflare Workers for C2 resolution, six layers of unpacking, Halo's Gate EDR evasion and Early Bird APC injection. A related WebDAV delivery chain overlaps with ClearFake campaigns distributing WordlistLoader and Amatera Stealer.
