[AINews] Poolside gets $12B reverse-execuhire to NVIDIA; founders stay for $1B, employees go for $6B, Infraco scaling to 7GW neocloud

NVIDIA struck a $12B deal with AI coding startup Poolside, licensing its Model Factory and hiring 109 of its technical employees.

NVIDIA spent roughly $12B in an unusual reverse-execuhire of Poolside, licensing the company's Model Factory while hiring 109 of its ~115 technical staff; founders retain a $1B stake and employees receive about $6B. Poolside had raced to raise $2B to fund a 40,000 GB300 cluster after missing a six-week funding window, and founders argue frontier-scale training now requires an order of magnitude more compute plus contracted data center space. An infrastructure arm spun out in January 2026 is scaling toward 7GW as a neocloud. The newsletter also recaps OpenAI and Anthropic agent-platform releases.

Enoki: Efficient Multi-Level Hallucination Detection

Researchers introduce Enoki, an open information extraction framework unifying claim-level and span-level hallucination detection in LLMs at lower inference cost.

Enoki extracts text-anchored relational facts, verifies them against evidence, and projects unsupported facts back onto hallucinated spans, so claim-level verification and span-level localization share one representation without separate alignment. It supports LLM-based, encoder-based, and rule-based extraction regimes to balance accuracy against inference cost. Experiments show it stays competitive with strong claim-level systems while using fewer resources and outperforms them on fine-grained span- and entity-level localization. The authors also release EnokiQA, a dual-granularity dataset with aligned claim-level verification and span-level localization annotations.

Former OpenAI researcher builds an AI model that judges options instead of writing text

TypeSafe AI launches Jev, a judgment-only model built by ex-OpenAI staff that classifies inputs with 70-500 ms latency instead of generating text.

Startup TypeSafe AI, co-founded by former OpenAI researcher and InstructGPT co-author Diogo Almeida, introduced Jev, a model that scores developer-defined answer options with probabilities rather than generating free-form text. The company claims 70-500 ms responses, parallel multi-question evaluation, and $0.042 per million input tokens with free outputs, targeting request routing, sales intent scoring, and assistant guardrail checks. Benchmarks are self-built and not independently verified, the 'no hallucination' guarantee only covers output structure, and access is currently via waitlist.

When Should LLMs Abstain? Chain-of-Self-Questioning for Selective Risk Control

Chain-of-Self-Questioning prompting cuts LLM wrong-answer commitments 32% relative while raising answered accuracy, holding across eleven model families.

The paper introduces Chain-of-Self-Questioning (CoSQ), a prompt-only framework that makes LLM answer commitment conditional on an explicit assessment of the information required to answer. On an 817-item TruthfulQA multiple-choice set, Grounded-CoSQ at τ=0.90 reduced mean unconditional wrong-commitment rate from 13.1% under chain-of-thought to 8.9% (a 32.1% relative reduction), while raising answered accuracy from 86.9% to 89.7% at 87.6% coverage. Improvements held across eleven open-weight and hosted model families and at every evaluated threshold, with convergent evidence from a Natural Questions short-answer evaluation.

Verifiable by Construction: Claim-Level Evaluation of Verbatim Citation in Clinical Question Answering

Evaluation of twelve LLMs on 222 clinical questions shows verbatim quotes rarely substantiate claims; claude-opus-5 fully substantiates only 37.1%.

The authors build a standardized harness over four clinical practice guidelines and evaluate twelve LLMs on 222 synthetic clinical questions, measuring citation attachment, verbatim quote production, and claim substantiation. Most models attach verbatim quotes to over 90% of claims from prompting alone, though lightweight models like claude-haiku-4.5 struggle. Quotes frequently fail to substantiate claims: claude-opus-5 quotes 98.0% of claims but fully substantiates only 37.1%, exposing a capability gap for verifiable clinical QA.

Inside ‘Project Lily’: The Humans Reading Your ChatGPT Chats

404 Media reveals OpenAI's 'Project Lily' has hundreds of contractors reading real ChatGPT user prompts, exposing sensitive personal data despite privacy filters.

404 Media reports that OpenAI employs hundreds of contractors who read real ChatGPT user prompts, including whole conversations, to rate and critique the chatbot's responses across a user base of over 900 million. Prompts are anonymized and run through OpenAI's Privacy Filter model, but the company acknowledged sensitive personal details can still reach reviewers, and 'user memories summaries' may reveal a user's location and personal context. The review work includes training ChatGPT to be less sycophantic and to stop anthropomorphizing itself, following lawsuits linking the sycophantic 4o model to multiple suicides. Anthropic confirmed it also uses human review to improve its models, and OpenAI's 'improve the model for everyone' data-sharing setting is on by default for free, Plus, and Pro users.

LLMs are real, AI is fake

Cory Doctorow argues the OpenAI chatbot 'hacking' of Hugging Face was a Python-scripted CTF loop, not autonomous AI.

In an opinion essay, Cory Doctorow debunks reports that OpenAI chatbots autonomously hacked Hugging Face servers during an 'Exploit Gym' capture-the-flag challenge. He explains the chatbot merely acts as a front-end queried by a Python program that replays commands drawn from CTF training data. He argues sensational 'AI went rogue' narratives are amplified by technical press and help AI companies raise investment capital.

Google stole open source code without crediting the authors (Artemis/Minitap)

Minitap alleges Google's Artemis mobile-agent project reused its open-source mobile-use code and stripped author attribution, despite Apache 2.0 requirements.

Minitap says Google's Artemis project for automating mobile devices contains code identical to its open-source mobile-use agent, including the Hopper agent's verbatim instructions and a WhatsApp messaging example, and that a package file listing authors Pierre-Louis Favreau, Jean-Pierre Lo, and Nicolas Dehandschoewercker was replaced via an August force push removing their names. The company argues this conflicts with Apache 2.0's requirement to preserve copyright and attribution notices. Minitap also claims the AndroidWorld leaderboard ignored its later 94.8% and 100% submissions while showing Artemis at 99.1% and mobile-use at 91.4%. It has published a public factual record with archived file comparisons.

Signing the Transaction but Not the Decision: Whisper Attacks and a Binding Defense for AP2

Research shows AP2 agent-payment signatures can be manipulated into valid but wrong carts; proposed A-VIP defense binds signed intent to purchases.

A study demonstrates Whisper attacks on the AP2 agent payment protocol, where ordinary product-description text steers shopping agents into carts that pass every cryptographic check but no longer match user intent. Using Gemini Flash-Lite models specified by AP2's default sample agents, three attacks succeeded at 90%, 56%, and 73.3%, with the vulnerability spanning seventeen Google models, three agent frameworks, cross-vendor anchors, and Google's consumer assistant. The proposed A-VIP defense treats signed intent as a capability grant, binding credential lookups to sessions and cart lines to seen listings, blocking the first two attacks with zero false positives while surfacing unauthorized spending. The authors release A-VIP code, machine-checked invariants, and AP2-WhisperBench with 1,544 evaluation scenarios.

ToxicRAG: Compromising Retrieval-Augmented Generation Systems via Single-Shot Knowledge Poisoning Attacks

ToxicRAG shows a single narrative-form poisoned document can steer RAG answers, achieving 0.61-0.91 attack success rates across four LLMs.

The attack injects one document per target question written as a coherent knowledge-update narrative that acknowledges the previously accepted answer, introduces fabricated events that appear to invalidate it, and attributes the attacker-chosen answer to purported authorities. Procedural Graphs: Self-Evolving Execution Structures for LLM Agents

Researchers introduce Procedural Graphs, self-evolving (procedure, relation, procedure) structures guiding LLM agent tool use and planning.

Procedural Graphs organize procedural knowledge into (procedure, relation, procedure) triplets to guide LLM agent actions, addressing drift such as lost objectives, out-of-order tool calls, and repeated unproductive steps. At each decision step the framework localizes the active node and a guidance model translates the surrounding subgraph into step-level situational guidance. An LLM refiner edits graph topology by contrasting failed with successful trajectories, and across datasets, task types and LLMs the approach outperforms memory-based baselines and matches or surpasses hand-designed graphs.

China-Based Artificial Intelligence Companies Conducting Industrial-Scale Distillation Campaigns Against U.S. AI Companies

NSA, CISA, and FBI warn DeepSeek, Alibaba, and other Chinese AI firms ran industrial-scale distillation of U.S. frontier models, threatening U.S. AI leadership.

A joint NSA, CISA, and FBI Cybersecurity Advisory (AA26-251A) says China-based firms DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, StepFun, and Z.AI extracted billions of tokens from U.S. frontier models including Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok, likely with Chinese government knowledge. Campaigns running since at least late 2024 used native APIs, cloud providers, third-party aggregators, gray-market proxy "transfer stations", and shared premium subscriptions to bypass geographic restrictions, evade safeguards, and violate providers' terms of use. The agencies recommend detecting anomalous prompts, accounts, and usage patterns; subtly altering responses to suspected distillers; and cross-organization intelligence sharing. They also call DeepSeek's publicly cited $5.6M training cost misleading because it excludes data acquired through distillation.

ResidualAuth: What Authorization State Must Language Agents Preserve under Revocable Delegation?

Formalizes residual authorization state language agents must preserve under revocable delegation; token-budget summaries mostly fail while hard gates stop unauthorized effects.

The paper shows two authorization histories with identical current permissions can require opposite decisions after the same direct-edge revocation, formalizing the needed information as residual authorization state. Exponentially many future-distinct states can share one transitive closure, with exact or tight asymptotic bounds on the state an exact monitor requires. Across four open-weight models, fixed 256-token summaries solved at most 2 of 16 paired episodes while authenticated current-query reads solved 15-16 of 16. A hard effect gate reduced eight observed unauthorized effects to zero without changing preceding attempts.

Procedural Graphs: Self-Evolving Execution Structures for LLM Agents

Procedural Graph framework stores procedural knowledge as triplets and self-evolves via LLM refinement, beating memory-based baselines across datasets, tasks, and LLMs.

The Procedural Graph organizes procedural knowledge into (procedure, relation, procedure) triplets; at each decision step the framework localizes the agent's active node and a guidance model translates the surrounding subgraph into step-level guidance that biases the solver's next action. An LLM refiner contrasts failed with successful trajectories and edits the graph's topology and attributes, retaining rejected edits to discourage repetition. Starting from a minimal skeleton, the loop builds graphs that match or surpass hand-designed ones and can repair flawed expert priors, delivering consistent gains over memory-based baselines across multiple datasets, task types, and LLMs.

Safety for Whom? Boundary-Aware Self-Distillation for Controlled LLM Safety Refusal

A self-distillation safety framework tunes narrow-boundary refusals in Qwen3-8B, raising target-domain refusal to 84.75% while cutting over-refusal from 15.20% to 5.20%.

The paper formulates narrow-boundary safety, where deployments need refusals within specific topics rather than whole subjects, and proposes an offline self-generated framework with controlled topic generation, escalating retries, and harmful-benign boundary pairs. On political persuasion with Qwen3-8B, the method raised target-domain refusal from 9.47% to 84.75% and cut the mean unsafe-response rate across three broader benchmarks from 26.26% to 0.14%. Verified target-model responses reduced over-refusal from 15.20% to 5.20%, and boundary-pair data cut comply-side over-refusal on held-out pairs from 32.94% to 4.16%. Results show data composition controls the safety-usability trade-off and alignment should be evaluated on both sides of the refusal boundary.
