Palo Alto PAN-OS Buffer Overflow Lets Attackers Execute Arbitrary Code as Root

Palo Alto Networks fixed CVE-2026-0310, a CVSS 9.2 unauthenticated PAN-OS buffer overflow enabling root code execution on PA-Series firewalls.

Palo Alto Networks published an advisory on September 9, 2026 for CVE-2026-0310, a CWE-787 out-of-bounds write in PAN-OS XML processing with a CVSS v4.0 base score of 9.2, affecting the management and dataplane interfaces. Unauthenticated attackers could execute arbitrary code as root on PA-Series hardware firewalls, while VM-Series faces denial-of-service impact and Prisma Access and Cloud NGFW have reduced, authenticated exposure. Affected releases include PAN-OS 10.2, 11.1, 11.2, 12.1, and 12.2 before fixed maintenance releases such as 12.2.3, 12.1.4-h10, 11.2.13-h2, 11.1.16-h2, and 10.2.18-h10; no workaround is available. Palo Alto is not aware of malicious exploitation but classifies remediation urgency as highest.

MacOS 27 - First Boot, (Tue, Sep 15th)

SANS ISC documents the expected network traffic macOS 27 'Golden Gate' generates on first boot to help defenders baseline their networks.

Johannes Ullrich of SANS Internet Storm Center captured roughly 300 packets from a macOS 27 'Golden Gate' system before user login, covering DHCP, IPv6 duplicate address discovery, DNS, and TCP behavior. macOS 27 resolves hostnames like albert.apple.com (device activation, certificate-pinned), push messaging hosts, and ipv4only.arpa for NAT64 networks. The OS still uses a TCP window scale of 6, ECN, and random timestamps, with only four TCP connections observed during boot. The analysis provides a reference baseline for security teams monitoring Apple endpoints.

Silver Fox Targets Japanese Manufacturer with 3

Chinese group Silver Fox used new vulnerable drivers and DLL side-loading to deploy ValleyRAT at a Japanese industrial manufacturer.

Cato Networks detailed a Silver Fox campaign against a Japanese industrial manufacturing organization combining new vulnerable-driver abuse (BootRepair.sys and EnPortv.sys alongside wsftprm.sys), DLL side-loading via Zeon Corporation PDF binaries, and NTDLL unhooking to deliver ValleyRAT (Winos 4.0), a Gh0st RAT variant. The chain starts with an invoice-themed phishing lure hosting attacker-controlled content on legitimate QQ and Tencent Cloud services. Shellcode is injected into svchost.exe via thread-context hijacking, and a dual watchdog design pairs payload monitoring with a scheduled-task batch script for persistence. A separate 180-day VirusTotal retrohunt found 146 Atlas RAT samples across six PDB builds, though the Silver Fox link remains circumstantial.

Critical Cisco FMC Flaws Actively Exploited to Gain Root Access and Deploy Malware

Threat actors actively exploit Cisco FMC CVE-2026-20079 (CVSS 10.0) for root access, with clusters linked to Sandworm and Qilin ransomware.

Cisco Talos warns of active exploitation of CVE-2026-20079, a CVSS 10.0 authentication bypass in Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center allowing unauthenticated root-level code execution, and CVE-2026-20316 (CVSS 5.3), which permits login via a low-privileged static account for privilege escalation. Hotfixes are available now, with a broader hardening release planned for the week of September 14. Three post-compromise activity clusters were identified: UAT-12197 deployed a home.jsp web shell and cmd.jar command executor; UAT-11823, attributed with high confidence to a Sandworm-linked APT, deployed a Netcat reverse shell and Cyclops Blink; and UAT-11988 showed Qilin ransomware tactics including Active Directory enumeration and credential theft before deploying Qilin ransomware.

xHunt Campaign: New PowerShell Backdoor Blocked Through DNS Tunnel Detection

xHunt's new CASHY200 PowerShell backdoor used DNS tunneling for C2; DNS security blocked beaconing at a Kuwait organization in September 2019.

Unit 42 describes CASHY200, a new PowerShell-based backdoor tied to the xHunt campaign that communicates with its C2 server windows64x[.]com via DNS tunneling, parsing commands from DNS answers. In September 2019, a Kuwait-based organization's DNS security service blocked the beaconing minutes after detection, cutting off adversary access. Samples dating to May and June 2018 and open source collection suggest the tool was used against Kuwait government organizations from spring 2018 through 2019, with malicious Word documents observed installing CASHY200 payloads configured with C2 domains such as firewallsupports[.]com and winx64-microsoft[.]com. The tool's name derives from identifiers stored under the registry key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Cashe and the command value 200.

Home & Small Office Wireless Routers Exploited to Attack Gaming Servers

Unit 42 details an updated Gafgyt botnet variant exploiting Zyxel, Huawei, and Realtek router vulnerabilities to recruit devices for DoS attacks on gaming servers.

Unit 42 researchers identified an updated Gafgyt variant derived from the JenX botnet that combines three remote code execution exploits: CVE-2017-18368 (Zyxel P660HN-T1A), CVE-2017-17215 (Huawei HG532), and CVE-2014-8361 (Realtek RTL81XX chipset). Shodan scans show more than 32,000 wireless routers worldwide potentially vulnerable to these exploits. The exploits act as droppers, pulling architecture-specific binaries from a malicious server (185.172.110.224), and the botnet performs denial-of-service attacks against gaming servers, most notably Valve Source engine servers.

VU#687587: AOMEI Backupper amwrtdrv.sys local privilege escalation vulnerability allows arbitrary writes to physical disks

AOMEI Backupper 8.4.0 driver flaw CVE-2026-12780 lets unprivileged users write physical disks and execute UEFI code, bypassing HVCI and EDR.

CERT/CC issued VU#687587 for CVE-2026-12780, an incorrect permission assignment (CWE-732) in the amwrtdrv.sys kernel driver shipped with AOMEI Backupper 8.4.0. The driver exposes a world-accessible device object without a security descriptor, allowing any unprivileged user to write arbitrary physical disk sectors; with Secure Boot disabled, an attacker can modify the GPT and inject a UEFI payload that executes before the OS loads, bypassing HVCI, EDR, Windows Defender and Hyper-V isolation. On TPM-only BitLocker configurations the attack can capture Volume Master Key material during pre-boot. AOMEI has shipped patches; users who cannot update should uninstall the software or disable the amwrtdrv.sys service, and enabling Secure Boot adds defense in depth.
