Cisco confirmed active exploitation of CVE-2026-20079, a critical (CVSS 10.0) unauthenticated authentication bypass in the Secure Firewall Management Center (FMC) web interface that lets remote attackers run malicious scripts and commands as root via crafted HTTP requests, reportedly by hijacking an unclaimed boot session, in a September 9, 2026 advisory. Cisco patched the flaw in early March 2026 and added IoCs in late July 2026. CVE-2026-20316 (CVSS 5.3) stems from static hard-coded credentials enabling unauthenticated low-privileged logins that can be chained for privilege escalation. Cisco Talos identified three post-compromise clusters: UAT-12197 (home.jsp JSP web shell plus cmd.jar executor extracting credentials from internal databases via OmniQuery.pl), UAT-11823 (assessed as Sandworm-linked; Netcat reverse shell, credential and configuration harvesting, and a Cyclops Blink backdoor deployed via a malicious license.tmp file with init.d persistence and DNS-over-HTTPS C2), and UAT-11988 (a Qilin ransomware affiliate using the static credentials for reconnaissance, AD enumeration with impacket and Invoke-TheHash, SOCKS5 proxies, reverse-SSH tunnels, AV killers, then Qilin ransomware deployment). CISA added CVE-2026-20079 to the KEV catalog with a September 12, 2026 remediation deadline for federal agencies. Separately, Sophos CTU analyzed a new 64-bit x86-64 Cyclops Blink variant (timezone_check) on FMC appliances compromised via both CVEs, adding internal network scanning and filtered packet capture, with high-confidence Russian-nexus attribution and a moderate-confidence link to Sandworm. Hotfixes are available now; a broader hardening release is expected the week of September 14–16, 2026 (sources differ), and defenders are urged to keep the FMC management interface off the internet.
