Hackers hijack HBO Max Reddit account to push malware in ClickFix ads

Hackers hijacked HBO Max's verified Reddit account to run 108 ClickFix ads delivering infostealers and crypto clippers to Windows and macOS users.

Hudson Rock and ADAMnetworks linked the hijacked u/hbomax Reddit account to a campaign they call PasteSwitch, which ran 108 malicious ads over roughly 48 hours pushing sites like hbomaxx.us, codex-craft.com, and code-desktop.com. ClickFix social engineering tricks victims into pasting Base64-obfuscated shell or PowerShell commands into Terminal or Run, delivering MacSync, AMOS helper persistence, Amatera Stealer loaded in-memory, and the AnimateClipper and ZigClipper crypto clipboard hijackers. Windows chains used an MP3/HTA polyglot to create scheduled tasks, disable AMSI, and launch 32-bit PowerShell; fake Ledger, Trezor Suite, and Exodus wallet apps steal recovery phrases. Reddit admins paused the ads, and it remains unclear how the account was accessed.

The best human hacking team still out-solved the best AI team

Hack The Box 2026 benchmark data shows AI agents helped top teams but human-only teams still solved everything while best AI teams stalled at 32 of 36 challenges.

At the 2026 Global Cyber Skills Benchmark (Project Nightfall) run by Hack The Box, 93 designated AI agent accounts across 54 teams held 2.7% of registered accounts but produced 4.2% of submitted flags and 4.6% of awarded points, and appeared in 17 of the Top 25 finishers. Median solve time dropped from 26 hours in 2024 to 13.8 hours in 2026, though the data cannot attribute the change to AI. At the November 2025 NeuroGrid CTF, AI-augmented teams solved challenges 3.2x faster overall but only 1.69x among the Top 5%, and the only team to complete all 36 challenges was human, while the best AI team stopped at 32.

FBI Disrupts China-Linked QTFY Infrastructure Used to Steal Data From U.S. Organizations

FBI and Lumen disrupted QTFY's QScan and QTRouter botnet platforms used by Chinese state-sponsored hackers to conceal intrusions into U.S. agencies.

The U.S. DoJ announced court-authorized seizure of domains behind QScan and QTRouter, operated by the Chinese state-sponsored group QTFY and employed by Nanjing Xinjiuwei Network Technology Company. QTFY has been active since May 2018 and targeted NASA, the Federal Reserve, the Department of Energy, DoJ, HHS, NIH, the U.S. Senate, and academic institutions. QScan exploits vulnerable IoT devices, feeding them into QTRouter, an OpenWrt-based proxy obfuscation network likened to an operational relay box (ORB) that masks attack origins. The group exploited zero-days such as Ivanti CSA flaws CVE-2024-8190, CVE-2024-8963, and CVE-2024-9380, plus numerous N-days, and maintained persistence with RATs, web shells, and legitimate credentials.

ClickFix attacks are tricking Mac and Windows users into hacking themselves

ClickFix campaigns trick users into pasting terminal commands via fake CAPTCHAs; latest wave abused HBO Max's hacked Reddit account to push infostealer ads.

ClickFix attacks use fake CAPTCHA or anti-bot prompts on hacked or counterfeit websites to convince victims to copy a command into Windows Command Prompt or macOS Terminal, instantly installing infostealers that steal passwords, logged-in sessions, and crypto wallets. The latest campaign compromised HBO Max's official Reddit account to post hundreds of fake ads linking to a spoofed HBO Max page carrying the lure, per researchers at Hudson Rock. It is unclear how many users were compromised. Because execution happens in the terminal, many attacks evade antivirus tools; enterprises can block terminals domain-wide and Mac users can deploy BlockBlock.

Microsoft Copilot Personal Flaws Could Let One Click Exfiltrate Data From Connected Apps

Varonis discloses CoSnitch (CVE-2026-24301), three Microsoft Copilot Personal flaws enabling one-click exfiltration of connected-app data; patched August 18, 2026.

Varonis Threat Labs found that an undocumented autorun=1 parameter, paired with the q parameter, lets an attacker-supplied prompt run automatically on page load in a victim's authenticated Copilot session, then exfiltrate data from connected services such as mail, calendar, Google Drive, chat history and the memory store via Copilot's built-in URL fetch to an attacker webhook. A separate memory-poisoning path through web summarization lets a crafted page persist attacker instructions in the user's memory, surviving password changes, session revocation and device re-enrollment. StopAndProtect Uses Nearly 2,000 Hacked WordPress Sites to Spread Malware and Steal Data

Check Point researcher Jaromír Hořejší reports the campaign begins with ClickFix fake-CAPTCHA prompts that trigger a PowerShell command, then two .NET downloader stages that launch six components: SilentEncryptor, NetworkShareScanner, a VBS spreader, LockScreen, SimpleChatProxy, and SilentDataCollector. Hacked WordPress sites host malware stages, serve C2 commands, and receive exfiltrated logs; the actors installed a self-deleting WordPress plugin enabling arbitrary PHP upload anywhere under the WordPress root. From mid-May to late July 2026 the operators exfiltrated more than 700 archives including screenshots every 30 seconds, keylogger output, and WhatsApp contact data, and opsec failures exposed their Visual Basic automation tooling and lists of nearly 2,000 compromised domains.

Abnormal Security analyzed iAuthFlow v2, a phishing toolkit sold on a Russian-language cybercrime forum for a $10,000 base price with additional capability modules sold separately. Using a browser-in-the-middle relay behind a trycloudflare.com subdomain with valid TLS, it captures Google logins and uses the authenticated session to enroll an attacker-controlled passkey within six seconds of login. Because the passkey persists after password changes and session revocation, operators regain mailbox access even after victims reset credentials. The build examined targets Google, while the seller advertises versions for Microsoft, iCloud, and LinkedIn.

The group inserted a self-spreading credential-stealing worm into open-source projects including Trivy, KICS, LiteLLM, and Telnyx, harvesting more than 500,000 credentials used for network access, ransomware, extortion, and sales. About 78,000 tokens and secrets from nearly 2,200 organizations leaked online last month, and the FBI supported the investigation that began in April.

Victims authenticate on legitimate Microsoft pages, letting the kit obtain a Primary Refresh Token in 32 seconds and register three devices in 78 seconds, with residential proxies matching the victim's location. The kit hides its redirect with encrypted addresses, junk data, and scanner-filtering challenges, and uses GHOSTnet-linked infrastructure during device enrolment. eSentire recommends blocking device-code authentication via Conditional Access, invalidating tokens, and reviewing newly enrolled devices.
