Hackers Disable Endpoint Protection and Deploy Sliver Across Compromised Windows Domain

The Hunter's Ledger tracked campaign UTA-2026-024 using Sliver C2, Domain Admin account creation, and Ethereum-based C2 rotation to compromise a US organization's Windows domain.

Operators created a non-expiring Domain Admin account, enabled RDP with NLA disabled, dumped SAM, SYSTEM and SECURITY hives plus LSASS memory, and disabled eight endpoint protection services. A Node.js implant resolved its C2 server from an Ethereum smart contract that rotated domains five times in five months, while SYSTEM scheduled tasks with backdated dates and DNS allowlist manipulation provided persistence. The infrastructure ties to a confirmed ransomware incident, but no encryptor deployment was proven in this intrusion.

Microsoft: September updates cause RDS failures on Windows Server

Microsoft confirms September 2026 Patch Tuesday updates break Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server 2012+; Group Policy mitigations and rollback workarounds available.

Microsoft confirmed that September 2026 Patch Tuesday security updates cause Remote Desktop Services failures on Windows Server 2012 and later, plus Windows 10 and Windows 11. Symptoms include unstable RDS, RDP connection failures after several minutes, sign-in issues, servers hanging at 'Please wait for the Remote Desktop Configuration,' and unresponsive MMC, RDS Licensing Diagnoser, and File Explorer. Microsoft published per-version Group Policy mitigations (covering KBs such as KB5124008, KB5122880, KB5122878, KB5122871, KB5122882, KB5122876, KB5123099, KB5123065, KB5123066) and suggests restarting affected VMs. Rolling back the updates restores RDS functionality but removes this month's security fixes.

TWINLOOT Abuses SharePoint and Teams to Steal Credentials and Move Across Networks

Ontinue disclosed TWINLOOT, a Python implant hiding C2 in SharePoint dead drops and Teams TURN relays, harvesting credentials and pivoting via reverse SOCKS5.

Ontinue's Cyber Defense Center identified TWINLOOT during a July 2026 campaign investigation: a modular, PyArmor-hardened Python implant (a 39 MB bootstrap-fat.pyc loader) whose entire C2 infrastructure lives inside trusted Microsoft services. Tasking flows through SharePoint Online file dead drops polled every 15 seconds via the Microsoft Graph API, while interactive operator access uses WebRTC DataChannels relayed by Microsoft Teams TURN servers; Graph traffic is driven by the victim's own headless Edge browser. The implant harvests Windows credentials with fake lock screens, offers a reverse SOCKS5 pivot for lateral movement to SMB, RDP, WinRM, and MSSQL, executes commands, and persists on hosts. Initial access is assessed to be Teams social engineering masquerading as IT support, prompting a PowerShell command to download the payload.

Slovakia's NBU found an SMS-triggered backdoor in Russian-made NERO R-ONE traffic cameras, pausing a 279-unit deployment.

Slovakia's national security service NBU issued an alert against NERO R-ONE high-speed traffic cameras after finding a backdoor that grants shell and network access via SMS from hardcoded Russian phone numbers. The cameras are a rebranded version of the Russian CORDON PRO.M model by St. Petersburg firm Semicon, purchased via a Cyprus shell company under a €30 million EU-funded project. The report also found SecureBoot disabled, vulnerable web management, and unauthenticated live streams; the Interior Ministry paused deployment of 279 cameras pending independent assessment.

Nearly 22,000 Microsoft Exchange servers remain exposed to critical security flaw (CVE-2026-62911)

About 22,000 Microsoft Exchange servers remain unpatched against critical auth bypass CVE-2026-62911 as a working exploit circulates online.

CVE-2026-62911 is a critical authentication bypass by capture-replay in Microsoft Exchange Server that allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges over the network, with a CVSS score of 8.0. Microsoft patched the flaw on August 11, 2026, but Shadowserver Foundation scans show roughly 22,000 servers unpatched, with the US (6,200) and Germany (5,100) leading; BSI reports 85% of on-premises Exchange servers in Germany are still vulnerable. The Netherlands' NCSC-NL flagged that a working exploit is circulating, and Exchange 2016/2019 require the Extended Security Updates program for fixes.

BigBear phishing crew nets thousands of Microsoft 365 credentials

CloudSEC accessed the BigBear 2.0 phishing panel, finding 5,137 stolen Microsoft 365 records across 461 organizations, including 474 MFA-bypassed sessions.

CloudSEC researchers got inside the admin panel of BigBear 2.0, an Evilginx2-based phishing-as-a-service operation run by someone known as 'General Boss'. The panel contained 5,137 records tied to 461 organizations: 1,032 plaintext passwords and 4,148 session cookies, with 474 complete MFA-bypassed authentications. The adversary-in-the-middle proxy captures Microsoft 365 session cookies that can be replayed to access email, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive, potentially pivoting into Entra ID and federated SaaS. The operation was still active, used custom JavaScript to disable FIDO2/WebAuthn on phishing pages, and routed logins through a residential proxy pool spanning 69 countries.

BigBear Microsoft 365 phishing service bypassed MFA at 258 organizations

CloudSEK found the BigBear 2.0 phishing-as-a-service platform bypassed MFA at 258 organizations and captured over 5,000 Microsoft 365 credentials.

CloudSEK researchers gained administrator access to the BigBear 2.0 phishing-as-a-service control panel and found it had exfiltrated 5,137 credential records, including 474 completed MFA-bypassed authentications, 1,032 plaintext passwords, and 4,148 session cookies across 3,331 victim IPs in 40+ countries. The Evilginx2-based AitM proxy intercepts credentials and authenticated session cookies, and custom JavaScript interferes with FIDO2/WebAuthn to force weaker authentication. The panel is leased to at least five affiliate operators via Telegram exfiltration bots, and geo-matched residential proxies cover 69 countries to evade detection.

Stratus Security released Sift, a free open-source command line tool that hunts passwords, API keys, and sensitive data across local disks, Windows shares, Active Directory, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Slack, Jira, and Confluence. In the firm's benchmarks, Sift scanned 250,000 files in 10.61 seconds versus Snaffler's 25.48 and averaged 92 MiB memory versus Snaffler's 337 MiB. Optional false-positive filtering runs through a local language model via Ollama, and scans write checkpoints so interrupted runs resume. The tool found thousands of credentials in Jira ticket comments that prior pentesting had missed.
