Thin-shell stability of Gaussian cooling: logconcave sampling with sesteric complexity from a cold start

Thin-shell stability proof along the Gaussian cooling path improves cold-start logconcave sampling complexity to near n^2.5 from n^2.75.

The authors prove that logconcave probability measures along the Gaussian cooling path have thin-shell stability, generalizing the thin-shell theorem. This yields improved complexity for sampling an arbitrary logconcave distribution from a cold start. For (near-)isotropic logconcave distributions the complexity is nearly n^2.5, improving the previous n^2.75 bound and matching the abstract Speedy walk.

Large Language Models for HVAC Operations in Building Energy Systems: A Critical Review of Methods, Applications, and Deployment Readiness

Systematic review of 66 studies finds LLMs for HVAC operations are mostly research-stage, with no ready-now deployment and only four pilot-level studies.

A critical review of 66 peer-reviewed studies from 2023 to March 2026 examines LLMs for HVAC operations in building energy systems. Only four studies reach pilot-level evidence, none reports sustained operational deployment, and 63 of 66 are research-only. Conventional ML, MPC, and RL remain dominant for high-frequency control and short-horizon forecasting, and the evidence supports LLMs primarily as semantic and workflow layers rather than autonomous controllers.

I Think the Military Commissary Freezers Were Hacked

Refrigeration failures at six-plus US military commissaries prompt speculation of a cyber attack on DeCA's remote monitoring systems; Pentagon acknowledges possible disruption.

The author documents near-simultaneous freezer and refrigeration failures at confirmed installations including Fort Huachuca, F.E. Warren AFB, Fort Irwin and Travis AFB on August 26-27, with freezers entering defrost mode that heated and spoiled food. DeCA's Remote Monitoring Control System controls defrost across roughly 182 locations, and an unverified comment attributed the Fort Huachuca failure to a network issue. Stars and Stripes and Military Times independently reported the multi-base failures, and the Pentagon acknowledged a 'possible refrigeration disruption,' though no evidence of hacking has been confirmed.

You Can't Prefer Emotions You Don't Sample: Intensity Undershoot in DPO-Tuned LLMs

Study quantifies DPO-tuned LLMs undershooting requested emotional intensity, tracing the gap to candidate-pool extremity rather than conditioning format.

Conditioning an instruction-tuned LLM on continuous valence-arousal targets yields gain of only 0.26 for valence and 0.13 for arousal on Llama-3.1-8B, far below faithful control of 1.0. The authors attribute undershoot to neutral-heavy preference corpora like EmoBank and candidate pools lacking extreme affect, leaving DPO without extreme exemplars. Uniform target coverage with a hotter candidate pool raises valence gain to 0.40 on Llama-3.1-8B and 0.44 on Qwen3-8B, with modest in-distribution cost; arousal gains remain unstable across seeds.

Chypothermia: Clock Freezing for Static Side-channel Attacks

Chypothermia attack uses cryogenic cooling to disable clock and voltage sensors, evading detection and blocking key zeroization on OpenTitan root of trust.

Chypothermia is a static side-channel attack that exposes chips to cryogenic temperatures, disrupting on-chip mixed-signal components to disable the clock sensor, clock generation circuit, and voltage sensors without electrical tampering. Combined with Chypnosis (IEEE S&P 2026), it halts the clock while evading temperature-based anomaly detection. It was implemented on multiple FPGA/SoC platforms and applied to the OpenTitan root of trust's alert handler, evading detection and preventing key zeroization. The authors also propose an FPGA-compatible self-heating sensor as a countermeasure.

Why Scaling AI Compute Performance Requires a New Power Architecture

NVIDIA argues AI factories need 800 VDC power distribution as dense GPU racks outgrow traditional AC-based delivery.

NVIDIA's blog contends each generation of accelerated computing demands higher rack density and more efficient, scalable power distribution. It frames the bottleneck as how power moves from the grid to the GPU rather than raw wattage, and describes limitations of traditional AC power delivery. NVIDIA advocates a new 800 VDC power architecture for AI factories.

From Megawatts to Tokens: How NVIDIA Maximizes AI Factory Production

NVIDIA detailed DSX power-management results: Lambda gained 24% token throughput at fixed power, and an AI factory auto-shed 1MW via Emerald AI's grid program.

NVIDIA says Lambda's first validation of DSX MaxLPS on HGX B200 servers ran 19 nodes within a 16-node power budget, lifting cluster token throughput 24% (roughly 4M to 5M tokens/second) and improving performance per watt by 23%. NVIDIA projects DSX MaxLPS can enable up to 40% more GPU capacity for Vera Rubin NVL72 factories within the same megawatt budget. Emerald AI's Conductor platform, running at NVIDIA's Eos factory with Silicon Valley Power, responded to over 200 utility demand signals, automatically dropping power from 4MW to 3MW without interrupting priority workloads. The first dedicated DSX Flex commercial deployment is planned at a 96-megawatt Manassas, Virginia facility.

What 90 days and a small budget can buy in AI agent security

Versa Field CISO details hidden costs of self-hosting open-weight models and a 90-day AI agent security plan of inventory, blast-radius reduction and testing.

In a Help Net Security interview, Prasad Tharippala, Field CISO at Versa, argues running open-weight models in-house improves control but shifts hardening, patching, access control, monitoring and incident response onto the buyer, with underestimated costs in GPU infrastructure, licensing review, EU AI Act compliance and scarce AI/ML security skills. On red-teaming AI agents, he recommends testing prompt injection, indirect injection, excessive permissions, data leakage, memory and RAG poisoning, malicious tool outputs, cross-agent trust abuse and infrastructure attack paths, mapped to OWASP agentic guidance and MITRE ATLAS. He highlights the handoff between chained agents as a major risk zone and stresses exercising human approval, shutdown and rollback controls under test conditions. For teams with 90 days and small budgets, he ranks inventory, blast radius reduction and ongoing testing as the priority order.

Powering AI is an architecture problem

Sponsored analysis argues AI data centers need medium-voltage, inline power architecture after Virginia grid faults knocked over 3GW of load offline.

A sponsored MIT Technology Review piece recounts a July 22, 2026 transmission fault in Ashburn, Virginia that shed more than 3 GW of data center load, and a 2024 incident where one failed surge arrester dropped about 60 facilities and 1,500 MW. It argues legacy UPS-based power stacks fail at AI scale because campuses can swing 70% of load in milliseconds and trip offline during grid disturbances. The proposed fix moves protection to medium voltage (13.8 kV and above) in inline enclosures near substations, improving density, permitting timelines, and backup power economics. A full-scale system tested at the DOE National Laboratory of the Rockies cleared ERCOT large-load ride-through requirements.

Operational Roles of QRNG-Derived Quantum Entropy in Bitcoin Proof-of-Work Architectures

arXiv study finds quantum-random entropy adds no Bitcoin PoW success advantage but helps assurance in fault and provenance scenarios.

The paper shows replacing classical entropy with QRNG output does not change honest Bitcoin proof-of-work success probability when candidate headers remain distinct. It introduces a reproducible benchmark measuring an entropy-efficiency factor and a reboot-diversity index, finding QRNG value only in assurance-oriented scenarios involving correlated restart faults, namespace reuse, and entropy provenance. Validation is simulation-based, with hardware-in-the-loop testing identified as future work.

Ask HN: How do you manage skills files?

A Hacker News thread debates whether agent skill files are worth managing, citing 2–4x output-token reductions on flagship models in one company's testing.

Commenters argue skills are stored prompts that help less-technical users compensate for weak prompting, while one participant reports company testing found skills reduce flagship-model output tokens by roughly 2–4x, a gap growing with newer models. Others note skills can bundle reusable scripts and inline commands for deterministic context building, and that harnesses now execute backticked commands before the agent sees the skill. Some argue improving model capability makes downloadable skills redundant.
