California's Digital Age Assurance Act forces Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android to collect age brackets from January 2027, with open-source exemptions pending.

California's Digital Age Assurance Act, signed in October 2025, requires major operating systems to collect user age brackets (under 13, 13-15, 16-17, 18+) and share non-identifying age signals with app developers starting January 1, 2027, with existing setups complying by July 1, 2027. AB1856, passed in late August 2026, would exempt open-source operating systems under GPL, MIT, BSD, and Apache licenses and awaits the governor's signature. Colorado, Illinois, and New York have similar age assurance measures, and the EFF has criticized the law for privacy and censorship concerns.

Knowing What Not to Answer: Selective Non-Compliance in Vision-Language Models

Researchers introduce KoNA, a benchmark exposing vision-language models' failures at selective non-compliance, plus fine-tuning that improves refusal and abstention accuracy.

KoNA is a benchmark for evaluating selective non-compliance in vision-language models across five categories: False Premise, Visual Inaccessibility, Universal Unknown, Task Feasibility and Safety. It tests both query-level and component-level non-compliance using paired single and compound queries, and evaluations across diverse VLMs show models often fail to refuse, correct or abstain appropriately, with failures worsening on compound queries. Fine-tuning VLMs on KoNA examples substantially improves non-compliance accuracy while largely maintaining performance on fully answerable tasks.

The OCUDU dApp Platform: An Open Runtime and E3 Interface for Real-Time AI-RAN

OCUDU open runtime lets third-party signed AI-RAN dApps run inside production 5G distributed units under three timing contracts, released as BSD-3 preview.

The OCUDU dApp platform provides an open runtime and E3 interface for executing signed AI-RAN applications inside a production 3GPP NR distributed unit, where prior dApp frameworks could only observe export streams. Modules run under three typed timing contracts: GPU receive-chain residency (Class A), the scheduler's 100 microsecond deadline (Class B), or non-blocking observer (Class C). On a GB10 gNB, dApps including an out-of-tree neural equalizer ran on a live cell without fallback. Platform, SDK, and a zero-hardware quickstart are public under BSD-3-Clause-Clear as a preview of the OCUDU AI-RAN Working Group 2.

Omni-Streaming Thinking

Omni-Streaming Thinking fixes premature cross-modal commitment in streaming omni-modal models via pending claims verified against modality-specific evidence, beating baselines by over 10%.

The paper identifies 'premature cross-modal commitment', where streaming models keep relaying early visual interpretations even after audio contradicts them. OST generates evidence-linked pending claims with future verification intervals, stores audio and visual evidence separately, and refutes claims when contradictory evidence appears. Built on a frozen Qwen3-Omni-30B-A3B-Instruct backbone with lightweight adaptation, it outperforms open baselines by more than 10% relative on five streaming and audio-visual benchmarks. On the new OST-DiagBench it reaches d-prime 2.95 versus at most 1.38 for open baselines, while reducing vision-induced auditory hallucinations.

Motion-Omni: End-to-End Joint Speech and Full-Body Motion for Spoken Dialogue

Researchers introduce Motion-Omni, an end-to-end model generating speech with synchronized full-body motion, responding 5.4x faster than cascade pipelines.

Motion-Omni is an end-to-end framework in which a spoken dialogue model outputs facial expressions and hand, upper-body, and lower-body motion directly from the hidden states that produce speech, replacing two-stage cascade pipelines. Trained on 422,856 quality-ranked pseudo-labeled pairs (1,402 hours) with a Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct backbone, Motion-Omni-Q7 matches its teacher cascade within 2% on reference-free motion metrics, achieves a 2.62% word error rate, and runs faster than real time (RTF=0.78). The authors also release the SwDA-500 dataset and the first public evaluation protocol for stochastic open-ended full-body spoken dialogue.

Augustinian BabyLM: What Ostensive Definition Can and Cannot Teach a Small Language Model

Study shows visually grounded token embeddings in a small masked LM persist through training and improve object-property knowledge, but escape standard BabyLM benchmarks.

The paper implements ostensive definition for a small DeBERTa masked language model trained on 10M words, seeding visually grounded tokens with embeddings derived from labeled image regions before training. Visual initialization leaves a persistent, seed-replicated advantage on object-property knowledge (COMPS) and a corpus-tailored Visual-Property Swap benchmark covering color, material, size, and shape, but has no effect on most BabyLM grammar benchmarks. Synthetic grounding of previously unseeded words causally transfers the advantage to exactly those words.

Meta Sued Over Training Data for Its AI and Face-Recognition Systems

Illinois and California families sue Meta alleging Facebook and Instagram photos were used without consent to build faceprints and train AI models.

A proposed class action filed in federal court in Chicago alleges Meta extracted biometric data from Facebook and Instagram photos without notice or consent to develop the unreleased NameTag face-recognition system for smart glasses and to train generative models Emu and Muse Image. Plaintiffs invoke Illinois' Biometric Information Privacy Act, seeking $5,000 per intentional or $1,000 per negligent violation, with a class that could number in the millions dating back to September 2021. Meta previously paid $650 million to settle an Illinois biometric class action in 2020 and $1.4 billion to Texas in 2024. Meta calls the suit without merit and says it is not building a universal face database.

Claude is no longer available for minors

Anthropic restricts Claude consumer accounts to users 18 and over, using detection signals and third-party Yoti verification to confirm age when minor activity is suspected.

Anthropic's support documentation states the Claude consumer product is available only to users over 18, and accounts flagged by minor-activity detection systems must verify age before continuing. Verification is handled by third-party provider Yoti through ID documents, selfies, or other accepted methods; Anthropic receives only a pass/fail result and never sees or stores the ID or images. Flagged accounts remain disabled until verification is passed, at which point they are reinstated.

Deep-Fake CAPTCHA: Mitigating Next-Generation Social Engineering Attacks

Safe word: What is it and why do you need one?

ESET recommends pre-agreed family safe words to counter AI voice-clone scams such as virtual kidnapping, as one-in-four Americans report receiving deepfake calls.

ESET outlines how scammers use just seconds of audio scraped from social media or work content to create convincing voice clones, with a Hiya report finding one-in-four Americans received a deepfake voice call in the past 12 months. Common schemes include virtual kidnapping calls mixing cloned voices with sobbing and background noise. A pre-agreed, non-OSINT-discoverable safe word, plus callback verification via known numbers and 2FA, reduces success rates of these frauds.
