Cisco email security boxes can be rooted by... an email

Attackers actively exploit critical Cisco Secure Email Gateway flaw CVE-2026-76461, turning a malicious email into unauthenticated root access.

Cisco Secure Email Gateway appliances are being actively exploited via CVE-2026-76461, a CVSS 9.8 AsyncOS flaw requiring no authentication—a crafted email can yield root command execution with no workarounds. Cisco's PSIRT became aware of active exploitation in September; some Secure Email Cloud customers showed indicators of compromise and all cloud devices were upgraded to AsyncOS 16.5.0-780. The bug is in CISA's KEV catalog with federal agencies ordered to remediate by September 17; Shadowserver counted 400+ exposed appliances. Fixes are available in AsyncOS 15.5.5-014, 16.0.4-302, and 16.5.0-780, and attackers with root may tamper with logs to hide activity.

Cisco Secure Email Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions Ciphertext Decryption Vulnerabilities

Cisco released an advisory for S/MIME ciphertext decryption flaws in Secure Email that could let unauthenticated remote attackers recover plaintext via machine-in-the-middle.

Multiple vulnerabilities in the S/MIME decryption functionality of Cisco Secure Email stem from insufficient validation of message integrity. An unauthenticated remote attacker could intercept and modify traffic between email gateways using a machine-in-the-middle technique to obtain plaintext from encrypted messages. No workarounds are available; no CVE identifiers or exploitation status were included in the advisory text.

New Phishing Attacks Use Trusted Email Infrastructure and URL Cloaking to Bypass Security Tools

Virus Bulletin Q3 2026 report details phishing using DKIM-aligned senders, Amazon SES delivery, and real-time URL cloaking to evade email security and scanners.

Virus Bulletin's Q3 2026 testing found phishing campaigns delivered through trusted infrastructure like Amazon SES with DKIM-aligned sender domains. Samples included a German overdue-invoice lure redirecting to OpenSea crypto fraud and a Romanian BCR-branded PSD2 banking credential-theft campaign. Cloaking pages used hidden iframes, browser fingerprinting, and time-zone checks to show different content to scanners versus victims. Defenders are urged to inspect full redirect chains rather than attachments or initial URLs alone.

Passkey-themed phishing attacks lead to Microsoft 365 data theft

Microsoft links ShinyHunters- and Helix-affiliated actors to passkey-themed vishing and device-code phishing that compromises Microsoft 365 accounts and steals cloud data.

Microsoft attributes passkey- and SSO-themed social engineering activity, observed since May 2026, to Storm-3121 (linked to ShinyHunters and Falcon) and Storm-3032 (tied to BlackFile members now operating as Helix). Attackers impersonate corporate IT help desks by phone or SMS, urging fake passkey, MFA, or SSO updates and directing victims to adversary-in-the-middle phishing pages or device-code authentication flows that yield credentials, session tokens, and OAuth tokens. Post-compromise behavior includes Microsoft Graph enumeration of users, SharePoint, and OAuth grants, plus persistence via attacker-controlled MFA methods. Google Threat Intelligence tracks related activity as UNC6671, linked to the BlackFile, Helix, Falcon, Pink, and Redact extortion gangs.

ControlAI’s Connor Leahy on why superintelligence is ‘not a weapon, it’s an adversary’

ControlAI's Connor Leahy argues superintelligence is an unmanageable adversary, backs the Sanders-Casar 'Ban Superintelligence Act' and international verification agreements.

On TechCrunch's Equity podcast, ControlAI's US Executive Director Connor Leahy argued that alignment and containment alone cannot manage superintelligence risk and advocated halting frontier development, citing the Sanders-Casar 'Ban Superintelligence Act' and parallel UK legislation ControlAI advised on. He characterized frontier AI labs as political actors, pointed to the OpenAI-related Hugging Face breach as evidence of danger, and called AI self-improvement the point of no return, endorsing international 'trust but verify' agreements.

Why Johnny Can't Encrypt: A Usability Evaluation of PGP 5.0 (1999)

Seminal 1999 USENIX study finds most novice users cannot correctly sign and encrypt email with PGP 5.0 in 90 minutes.

Whitten and Tygar's USENIX Security Symposium paper evaluates whether cryptography novices can use PGP 5.0 effectively, using cognitive walkthrough analysis and a laboratory user test. The majority of test participants failed to successfully sign and encrypt a message within 90 minutes, despite PGP 5.0 having a well-regarded graphical interface. The authors argue that security requires usability standards beyond those of general consumer software and propose domain-specific UI design principles for security. The paper is a foundational reference in usable security research.

Phishing Campaign Sends Millions of Emails Using Invisible Unicode to Evade Filters

Microsoft warns of a high-volume phishing campaign using invisible Unicode characters to split keywords like 'funding' and evade filters, peaking at 2.37 million daily messages.

Microsoft's Security Research team documented a high-volume phishing operation inserting deprecated Unicode Tags characters (U+E0000-U+E007F) inside financial keywords such as 'funding' so literal-string and regex email filters stop matching them. The campaign ran on a weekly cadence with 1-2.37 million weekday messages between February and May 15, 2026, peaking on February 26, 2026. It used hundreds of disposable finance-themed sender domains and relayed mail through ActiveCampaign's click-tracking infrastructure (acemlnd[.]com, activehosted[.]com), lending legitimate platform reputation. Microsoft ties the activity to an AI-assisted SBA loan phishing campaign that Fortra's FIRE team disclosed in September 2025.

New Cryptographic Context Injection Attack Could Let Web Pages Steal Grok Chat Data

Adversa AI demonstrated 'Cryptographic Context Injection' making xAI's Grok leak chat history and session data to attacker-controlled servers via encrypted web payloads.

Adversa AI disclosed a technique where a web page carries an encrypted JSON object (PBKDF2 and AES-256-GCM) that Grok's code-execution runtime decrypts, letting attacker instructions bypass content classifiers and reach the model's context. Testing targeted grok.com running Grok 4.5 Fast on August 19, 2026, with a reported 40% success rate over 20 attempts since June; no CVE, patch, or in-the-wild exploitation is reported. A related demonstration reproduced Gemini 3 Flash system instructions via a fabricated Python traceback, while GPT-5 failed to parse the payload and Claude Sonnet 4.5 flagged it as prompt injection.

GhostCode Abuses Microsoft Entra Device Enrollment to Maintain Access After Token Revocation

eSentire exposes GhostCode, a device-code phishing kit that abuses Microsoft Entra device enrollment to persist even after stolen tokens are revoked.

eSentire's Threat Response Unit observed GhostCode campaigns in late August 2026, using BEC-style social engineering that impersonated procurement staff, including BJ's Wholesale Club, via Salesforce contact forms. Victims received password-protected HTML lures disguised as a FlipBook document portal, with junk-data padding, HTML comment injection, and AES-256-GCM encrypted redirects gated by anti-bot checks. The kit exploits the OAuth 2.0 device authorization grant, prompting victims to approve real Microsoft device-code sign-ins with MFA.
