SAS: Simple Attention Sparsification via End-to-End Optimization of Context Ranking

SAS trains attention sparsification end-to-end with the language modeling loss, beating sparse attention baselines especially under tight context budgets.

Simple Attention Sparsification (SAS) injects the selector's continuous scores into attention logits in log form inside the softmax, letting gradients from the language modeling loss directly update the ranking of context units. The method uses normalized softmax gates calibrated against the current block and a memory-efficient Triton kernel integrated into FlashAttention-style computation. Across reasoning, long-context, and agentic tasks, SAS consistently outperforms trainable sparse attention baselines across budgets, with the largest gains under tight attention budgets.

Few-Shot Learning for Network Intrusion Detection: Methods, Datasets, and Performance

A PRISMA-style review of 21 few-shot learning studies for network intrusion detection finds meta-learning and CNNs dominant and evaluation inconsistently reported.

The systematic review screened 1,358 records from ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, and Scopus covering 2022-2026 and retained 21 studies on few-shot learning for network intrusion detection. Meta-learning (8 studies) and convolutional neural networks (10) are the most common approaches, while CIC-IDS2017 and CSE-CIC-IDS2018 are the most frequently used datasets. Most evaluations use five or fewer samples per class, and missing parameters and source code limit reproducibility and direct comparison.

Convergent Emergence of In-Context Learning Across Modalities

Controlled experiments show few-shot in-context learning emerges across six modalities including language, genomes, images, and proteins, partially supporting a convergence hypothesis.

The paper tests the Convergent Emergence Hypothesis: that few-shot in-context learning, when it emerges, shares a common cross-modality difficulty profile. A controlled framework instantiated the same task suite across six modalities: language, genome, integer sequences, time series, images, and proteins. Paired-mapping ICL emerged in all six modalities, surpassed controlled baselines, and showed correlated per-task effects in five of them, providing partial support for the hypothesis.

Online Learning with LLM Experts from Limited Feedback

Paper proposes bandit algorithms for adaptively routing prompts to LLM experts, minimizing regret under limited feedback budgets.

The paper formulates adaptive prompt routing to K LLM experts as a contextual bandit problem with d prompt features over T rounds. Proposed algorithms strategically select actions and observe rewards, achieving O(dT/m) regret in the full-information setting and O(dTK/m) in the bandit setting, where m is the feedback budget. Experiments demonstrate efficient learning of high-quality routing strategies across diverse LLMs from limited feedback.

Forgetting Only What Matters: Layer-Selective Unlearning toward Robust LLMs

Researchers introduce FOM-UL, a layer-selective machine unlearning framework that improves forgetting-utility trade-offs and resists knowledge recovery after quantization.

FOM-UL selects transformer layers for unlearning using a forget-to-retain significance score, concentrating parameter updates on layers highly influential for the forget set while leaving most of the model unchanged. It reduces residual memorization versus GA, NPO, KLD, SURE, ReLearn, and LUNAR-based baselines on TOFU, KnowUnDo, and MUSE-style evaluations while preserving retain-set utility. Under 8-bit and 4-bit post-training quantization and adversarial prompts, it maintains stronger suppression of forgotten content, addressing brittleness of diffuse unlearning updates.

Breaking the Vision-Action Shortcut: Latent Interface Training for Generalizable Robotics Foundation Models

Latent Interface Training improves robot foundation model generalization by constraining visual conditioning, boosting LIBERO-Plus success up to 10.7 points.

The paper identifies vision-action shortcuts where robot policies exploit task-irrelevant visual cues that fail under distribution shift. Latent Interface Training (LIT) first trains an action expert conditioned on language, robot state, and terminal SE(3) end-effector poses without images, then constrains visual input through a pose-supervised latent interface. Across four VLA and world-action architectures (Pi0.5, MolmoAct2, FAST-WAM, ImageWAM), LIT improves LIBERO-Plus success by 3.87-10.70 percentage points. Real-world tests show 13.30-16.70 percentage-point gains under unseen cameras, lighting, and distractors.

Eliciting Weak-to-Strong Generalization with On-Policy Reverse Distillation

OPRD distillation enables weak-to-strong generalization by amplifying verifier-supported policy updates, outperforming existing RL and distillation methods with fewer student updates.

On-Policy Reverse Distillation (OPRD) evaluates a weak teacher's policy shift relative to its reference policy on student rollouts and amplifies the verifier-supported component of the student's policy gradient. This rescaling preserves the stationary points of policy optimization while letting the student learn beyond the teacher's capacity ceiling. In successive model transfer and multi-teacher distillation, OPRD achieves higher performance with fewer student updates than existing RL and distillation approaches, and response-style analysis shows students remain closer to verifier-RL-trained models than to their weak teachers.

Distill Globally, Adapt Locally: Reasoning Distillation and Product-Type Test-Time Training for Scalable Trade-Up Recommendation

A distillation framework compresses LLM reasoning into a 15.5M-parameter trade-up recommendation model reaching AUC 0.941 with product-type test-time training.

The paper targets trade-up recommendation, which identifies higher-quality alternatives that preserve customer purchase intent. A retrieval-augmented few-shot LLM teacher generates labels and rationales that supervise a compact embedding-pair classifier; at inference the 15.5M-parameter student uses only two precomputed 768-dimensional embeddings with no LLM calls. On 8,352 annotated pairs, label-only training scored AUC 0.912, reasoning distillation reached 0.924, and product-type test-time training lifted it to 0.941 with average precision 0.940. The distilled student is roughly 5,000x faster and 10,000x cheaper than direct LLM inference on a 100K-pair proxy catalog.

Understanding the Impact of Model Pruning on Long-Tail Forgetting and Explanation Reliability in Medical Imaging

Systematic study finds model pruning causes frequency-dependent long-tail forgetting in medical imaging and that gradient-informed methods best preserve explanations.

Across two long-tailed medical imaging datasets, two CNN architectures, four pruning methods, and sparsity up to 95%, the study measures predictive performance, explanation stability, and faithfulness. Rare classes degrade earlier and more severely than frequent ones, while explanation reliability depends mainly on the pruning strategy, with gradient-informed methods degrading least. Mechanistic analysis ties explanation collapse to loss of class-discriminative gradients rather than vanishing feature activations, recommending class- and explanation-aware evaluation of compression.

Inoculation Midtraining with Learned Neologisms

Inoculation Midtraining confines unsafe LLM behavior to a neologism-marked context, reducing misalignment after unsafe post-training but leaking under nearby contextual cues.

The paper introduces Inoculation Midtraining, which teaches a base model during midtraining that unsafe behavior belongs to a context marked by a learned neologism token, then post-trains on unsafe data within that context. Across supervised fine-tuning and RL post-training regimes, the technique reduces misalignment while preserving transfer of benign properties like German or Shakespearean prose. However, it does not outperform standard Inoculation Prompting, is sensitive to training configuration, and produces a leaky boundary that nearby contextual cues can reactivate. The authors conclude it is not yet a load-bearing component of a developer safety framework.

Do Input-Level Defenses Transfer to Observation-Level Attacks on VideoLLMs?

A systematic study shows input-level adversarial defenses provide inconsistent, often near-zero protection against observation-level attacks on video LLMs.

Researchers introduce DefTEval, a controlled framework testing eleven input-level defenses against five attack types across five video LLMs. Harmful-content detection rates are frequently near zero, and defenses fail even when attacks embed harmful signals in every sampled frame. Token compression discards localized safety features and modality fusion down-weights weakened visual signals, with defense outcomes dominated by model architecture rather than the defense method.

Multi-Grid Post-Training for Long-Form Multi-Shot Video Generation

MovieGrid arranges long videos on spatial grids during post-training, generating 6.05x more shots than temporal packing with state-of-the-art cross-shot consistency.

MovieGrid is a multi-grid post-training paradigm that decomposes long videos into temporally ordered chunks arranged on a spatial grid for joint modeling, enabling cross-chunk information exchange. The authors build the Multi-Grid Long Video (MGLV) dataset from 1,000 long-form videos, producing 54K grid videos paired with character-aware story prompts. Under the same token budget, MovieGrid generates 6.05x more shots than Temporal Packing in a 1,616-frame video. It achieves state-of-the-art intra-shot consistency of 0.9131 versus 0.8086 for HoloCine and inter-shot consistency of 0.5914 versus 0.5384 for StoryMem.

Label-Guided Knowledge Distillation for 3D-CNNs in Action Recognition

LGKD uses ground-truth labels to guide feature distillation for 3D-CNNs, combining sample-wise and class-wise distillation for action recognition.

The paper proposes Label-Guided Knowledge Distillation (LGKD) for 3D-CNNs, noting that most video feature distillation methods are simple adaptations of image techniques that neglect temporal-dimension differences. LGKD combines sample-wise distillation, which uses label information and the teacher's probability distribution to guide features impacting temporal accuracy, with class-wise distillation employing a prototype network to capture relational knowledge among same-category samples. Experiments on the UCF101 and HMDB51 action recognition benchmarks achieve competitive results.

Augustinian BabyLM: What Ostensive Definition Can and Cannot Teach a Small Language Model

Study shows visually grounded token embeddings in a small masked LM persist through training and improve object-property knowledge, but escape standard BabyLM benchmarks.

The paper implements ostensive definition for a small DeBERTa masked language model trained on 10M words, seeding visually grounded tokens with embeddings derived from labeled image regions before training. Visual initialization leaves a persistent, seed-replicated advantage on object-property knowledge (COMPS) and a corpus-tailored Visual-Property Swap benchmark covering color, material, size, and shape, but has no effect on most BabyLM grammar benchmarks. Synthetic grounding of previously unseeded words causally transfers the advantage to exactly those words.

When Models Edit Too Much: On the Fidelity of Minimal Code Edits

A 400-task BigCodeBench evaluation shows frontier LLMs widely over-edit code; a preservation instruction cuts excess edits and raises Pass@1 by 2.3 points.

Researchers built an evaluation framework from 400 BigCodeBench problems with injected AST-level corruptions, each with a known minimal patch, to measure over-editing in LLM code repair. Even strong models like GPT-5.5 produce unnecessarily large edits despite high Pass@1. Adding a preservation instruction reduced average excess Levenshtein distance from 0.195 to 0.131, cut added cognitive complexity by 26.6%, and raised Pass@1 by 2.3 points. Reinforcement learning post-training gave the best out-of-domain edit-fidelity trade-off, while supervised fine-tuning overfit to seen corruption patterns.

MInTRL: Off-policy Intervention can boost On-policy RL

MInTRL injects sparse judge corrections into on-policy RL rollouts, expanding exploration beyond on-policy sampling while preserving learnability on math and code benchmarks.

Minimal Intervention Reinforcement Learning periodically has a judge-intervention policy replace erroneous suffixes of the current policy's output with short corrections, then returns control, keeping trajectories largely on-policy. Training uses a sequence-level advantage-regression objective that removes the need for importance sampling. Across math and code benchmarks it consistently beats standard on-policy and off-policy baselines, remains effective with self-intervention, and performs best at moderate intervention intensity.

SQS: Bayesian DNN Compression through Sparse Quantized Sub-distributions

SQS unifies weight pruning and low-bit quantization via Bayesian variational learning, compressing Llama3.2 and Qwen2.5 at higher rates with comparable accuracy.

SQS introduces a unified Bayesian variational framework performing simultaneous pruning and low-bit quantization, using a spike-and-slab prior for sparsity and Gaussian Mixture Models to model quantized weights. The authors derive an efficient approximation for the intractable objective and provide a consistency result for the variational approach. Experiments on ResNet, BERT-base, Llama3.2, and Qwen2.5 show higher compression rates than prior baselines with comparable performance drops.

SimpleMemVLA: A Simple but Effective Native-Video Memory for Vision-Language-Action Models

SimpleMemVLA passes full timestamped video history straight to a VLA backbone, setting state of the art on four memory benchmarks.

SimpleMemVLA is a vision-language-action model for long-horizon manipulation that removes the dedicated memory module entirely. It keeps sampled history intact and feeds it to the backbone as timestamped video, with the hidden states of a generated sub-task serving as the only channel into a standard flow-matching action head. Prefilling the shared history prefix during action execution keeps latency close to a single-frame VLA. The system sets a new state of the art on four memory benchmarks and outperforms retrieval, compression and recurrent-state mechanisms, with causal interventions confirming the policy genuinely reads its history.

Pre-Whitening and BCJR Posterior Distillation for Bi-LSTM Detection in Faster-than-Nyquist Signaling

Study shows nested-window Bi-LSTM architectures do not improve faster-than-Nyquist detection; pre-whitening plus BCJR distillation cuts bit error rates.

Across roughly 260 controlled trainings, processing nested intersymbol-interference windows in separate recurrent branches never significantly beat a plain Bi-LSTM at matched parameter budgets. The authors attribute the limitation to the observation model rather than architecture, and instead pre-whiten inputs and distill BCJR soft posteriors into the network. With 3.4% more parameters, the method reaches 1.05x the BCJR bit error rate at compression factor 0.8 and 1.89x at 0.7, improving to 1.47x with a wider whitened window.

Learning Multimodal One-step Flow Policy via Value-weighted Optimal Transport

OptiFlow learns one-step multimodal flow policies for offline RL via state-wise entropic optimal transport, avoiding critic overestimation and mode collapse.

The paper introduces OptiFlow, a framework that frames one-step flow policy learning as a structured sample-allocation problem in offline reinforcement learning. It jointly trains a value-aware reference flow policy and a one-step policy, coupling action samples through state-wise entropic optimal transport where critic values set distillation priority and action-distance cost ensures geometrically compatible pairings. By avoiding direct critic maximization, it anchors the policy to high-value dataset-supported modes without out-of-distribution divergence. Code is released on GitHub and the method performs strongly across diverse offline RL benchmarks.

The Router Within: Eliciting Native Skill Routing from a Frozen LLM

Gavel reads native skill-routing signals from a frozen LLM's forward passes with two linear maps, beating retrieve-and-rerank pipelines by up to 21.9 points on Qwen3-32B.

Gavel (Glance And Verdict from a frozen LLM) elicits skill routing from a frozen agent LLM using two trained linear maps that read mid-layer states, keeping all skill text out of context. A glance step scores the full library against compact per-skill banks built in one forward pass at installation; a verdict step resumes shortlisted skills' forward passes and fuses likelihood and yes/no judgments as a product of experts. Learning 3D Editing without Paired Supervision via Generative Prior Distillation

New framework distills 2D editing and VLM priors into a feed-forward 3D editing model without paired 3D training data.

The method, PriorEdit3D, learns feed-forward instruction-guided 3D editing by distilling knowledge from foundation models instead of using ground-truth 3D pairs. Through a differentiable rendering pipeline it supervises a 2D visual prior from an image editing model at the main view and a Vision-Language Model semantic prior at novel views for instruction fidelity and identity preservation. A 3D-aware Distribution Matching regularization constrains outputs to the manifold of realistic 3D assets defined by a pretrained image-to-3D teacher. Experiments report superior instruction fidelity and cross-view consistency over state-of-the-art baselines, with code released on GitHub.

Train Smarter, Not Harder: Switching Signal-Guided Training in Active Learning

HybridAL is an active-learning training schedule that switches from retraining to fine-tuning on stabilization signals, saving up to 49% time.

Researchers find that choosing between retraining from scratch and fine-tuning is an exploitable decision variable in active learning: retraining helps in early rounds while fine-tuning is safer once the model trajectory stabilizes. HybridAL monitors an online stabilization signal using spectral exponent change and accuracy change, switching from retraining to fine-tuning after sustained stabilization. Across three encoder backbones and six text-classification tasks with five seeds each, HybridAL keeps endpoint macro-F1 non-inferior within a 0.010 margin, saves up to 49% of retraining time, and improves the time-calibration trade-off measured by negative log-likelihood.

Domain-Incremental Learning for Multi-Channel Replay Speech Detection

First continual learning benchmark for multi-channel replay speech detection shows task-specific beamforming cuts catastrophic forgetting across 24 acoustic environments.

Researchers frame replay-attack detection for voice-controlled systems as domain-incremental learning over acoustic environments, evaluating a beamformer-based detector across all 24 environment orderings of the ReMASC corpus with five seeds. Naive sequential fine-tuning raises error rates on previously learned environments by 18.8 points, while elastic weight consolidation halves forgetting but loses plasticity and gradient projection memory is statistically indistinguishable from naive fine-tuning. A task-specific beamformer keeping one spatial front-end per environment significantly improves final and incremental accuracy, and the last environment in a sequence dominates final performance.

Not All Prompts Are Equal: Exploration-Guided Prompt Scaffolding for Multimodal Reinforcement Post-Training

Exploration-guided prompt scaffolding rewrites training prompts by Exploration Potential Score, boosting multimodal RL post-training accuracy up to 11.5%.

The paper proposes dynamically adapting the training prompt distribution during online RL post-training of multimodal LLMs using the Exploration Potential Score (EPS), a lightweight rollout-based proxy for prompt utility computed from on-policy statistics with no additional overhead. Rather than discarding low-utility prompts, a teacher model generates scaffolded rewrites that preserve task intent while making training more informative.
