Embedded Graph Flows for Categorical Graph Generation

Researchers propose Embedded Graph Flows, a generative model with learned categorical embeddings that beats DiGress and GruM on molecular graph benchmarks.

Embedded Graph Flows (EGF) learns continuous embeddings for node and unordered-edge categories and transports Gaussian noise toward these endpoints using a permutation-equivariant graph transformer. On QM9 it achieves the best result on all four reported metrics, with a Fréchet ChemNet Distance of 0.150 versus 0.717 for DiGress and 0.812 for GruM. On ZINC250k it retains the lowest NSPDK MMD, indicating close agreement with local substructures of reference molecules. Code is released on GitHub.

Testing race conditions with memory access tracing and stack-based delay injection

Google Project Zero released MAccConc, Linux kernel tooling that traces memory accesses to explore and test race condition interleavings.

A Google Project Zero researcher published MAccConc (Memory Access Concurrency), tooling for exploring possible interleavings of multithreaded test cases in the Linux kernel, available on GitHub. The tools use KCOV with ASAN outline-mode instrumentation to record per-access memory traces, enabling automatic testing of all A-B-A interleavings plus terminal and GUI explorers for manual analysis. The work targets confirming race condition candidates, building reliable regression tests, and enabling concurrency fuzzing, drawing on ideas from SKI and Ned Williamson's sockfuzzer.

Graph Machine: Towards Better Pretraining via Edges

Researchers propose Graph Machine, an O(n)-state sparse architecture that replaces 75% of Qwen3-0.6B dense layers with only slight loss change.

The paper introduces the Graph Machine (GM), an architecture that maintains an O(n)-sized state accessed through sparse, dynamic routing via pointer-like edges updated differentiably by a referral mechanism resembling pointer chasing. The authors replaced 75% of dense Transformer layers in Qwen3-0.6B with GM sparse layers and pretrained from scratch on 15.7B tokens. Retrieving 2 of 4,096 tokens per KV head in each sparse layer degrades loss only slightly, while retrieving 4 marginally improves loss over the dense baseline.

How AI and cybersecurity are reshaping ServiceNow

Analysis argues ServiceNow's $7.75B Armis acquisition and AI-driven consumption pricing are reshaping its ITSM platform amid SaaS market anxiety.

CSO Online examines how AI agents, vibe-coding fears, and a reported 30% share price drop are pressuring ITSM leader ServiceNow, and how the company is pivoting toward consumption-based revenue and cybersecurity. The piece highlights ServiceNow's $7.75 billion cash acquisition of Armis, priced at roughly 23 times the vendor's $340 million annual revenue, as a strategic move to supercharge ITSM workflows with accurate device inventory and orchestration rather than to sell a standalone security product. Experts note this ends Armis's vendor-neutral position, introduces the CISO as a new buyer, and will likely lead to aggressive Armis bundling at contract renewals.

Recurrent GraphNeural NetworkswithSet-BasedAggregation

Paper proves two-directional equivalence between recurrent GNNs with set-based aggregation and Boolean closure of reachability/safety properties in modal mu-calculus, checkable from weights.

The authors study recurrent graph neural networks with set-based aggregation and identify sufficient conditions, checkable directly from network weights, for compiling networks into logical formulas and formulas into networks. They establish an effective two-directional equivalence with the Boolean closure of reachability and safety properties, the fragment BΣ°1 of the modal μ-calculus, shown to be the exact expressive level of stabilization over finite vocabulary. The correspondence needs no counting logic, external halting signal, or non-effective acceptance condition, yielding a verifiable path from weights to symbolic explanations.

Clearview AI Is Testing an AI Tool That Would Let Cops Unearth Your Life Online

Clearview AI is prototyping InquiryIQ, an AI analyst assistant that would automatically profile individuals identified through its face-recognition searches for police.

WIRED uncovered InquiryIQ, an unreleased Clearview AI prototype described as an AI analyst assistant that fans out across the web from a face-recognition search result to assemble profiles including employers, aliases, associates, and physical characteristics. The company tested a model from xAI (merged with SpaceX), maker of Grok, and the interface accepts age, gender, and race inputs to guide searches. Clearview says the prototype was never pitched or shipped to customers and no law enforcement user has used it; the database has grown to over 70 billion images used by more than 2,000 law enforcement agencies.

Procedural Graphs: Self-Evolving Execution Structures for LLM Agents

Researchers introduce Procedural Graphs, self-evolving (procedure, relation, procedure) structures guiding LLM agent tool use and planning.

Procedural Graphs organize procedural knowledge into (procedure, relation, procedure) triplets to guide LLM agent actions, addressing drift such as lost objectives, out-of-order tool calls, and repeated unproductive steps. At each decision step the framework localizes the active node and a guidance model translates the surrounding subgraph into step-level situational guidance. An LLM refiner edits graph topology by contrasting failed with successful trajectories, and across datasets, task types and LLMs the approach outperforms memory-based baselines and matches or surpasses hand-designed graphs.

Procedural Graphs: Self-Evolving Execution Structures for LLM Agents

Procedural Graph framework stores procedural knowledge as triplets and self-evolves via LLM refinement, beating memory-based baselines across datasets, tasks, and LLMs.

The Procedural Graph organizes procedural knowledge into (procedure, relation, procedure) triplets; at each decision step the framework localizes the agent's active node and a guidance model translates the surrounding subgraph into step-level guidance that biases the solver's next action. An LLM refiner contrasts failed with successful trajectories and edits the graph's topology and attributes, retaining rejected edits to discourage repetition. Starting from a minimal skeleton, the loop builds graphs that match or surpass hand-designed ones and can repair flawed expert priors, delivering consistent gains over memory-based baselines across multiple datasets, task types, and LLMs.

Benign Loss Landscapes Can Coexist with Worst-Case Hardness

Theory paper shows tree tensor networks contain worst-case hard targets yet benign loss landscapes, with difficulty arising from degenerate saddles.

The paper studies tree tensor networks (TTNs), which generalize deep linear networks and Tucker decompositions and embed arbitrary read-once Boolean formulas. It proves that every local minimum that is minimum-norm is global for every realizable target, so bad local minima do not distinguish typical from worst-case problems. Instead, learning difficulty arises from high-order degenerate saddle points caused by rank-deficiency, illustrated via a parity function case study, linking landscape geometry to computational hardness.

Diffusion Models and Concept Formation

Paper argues diffusion models implicitly form Cobweb-like concept hierarchies, with a basic level emerging at intermediate noise levels.

The authors draw a formal correspondence between diffusion models and Cobweb, a classic incremental concept-hierarchy learner, noting both are hierarchical Bayesian density models with Gaussian prototypes. Modes of the diffusion model's noisy marginals form a hierarchy whose basic level sits at intermediate noise, where class identity commits. The correspondence is tested on MNIST and Fashion-MNIST via mode-finding. Diffusion is reframed as a cognitive model of concept formation.

GraphProfiler: Source-Linked Sensitive Attribute Inference via Personal Knowledge Graphs

GraphProfiler links LLM attribute inferences to source posts via personal knowledge graphs, enabling targeted redaction of privacy-leaking content.

GraphProfiler represents a user's post history as a source-linked personal knowledge graph where nodes and edges trace back to originating posts, making LLM-based attribute inference auditable. It reaches 86.7% attack success rate on the eight-attribute SynthPAI benchmark and 84.6% on PANDORA, within two points of strong text-only baselines, while citing supporting evidence for over 98% of predictions. Ablation experiments show removing cited posts reduces attack success substantially more than removing random posts, supporting targeted privacy mitigation.

Nonmaximal sums of maximally monotone operators under Rockafellar's constraint qualification

Mathematical paper constructs counterexamples on c0 and l1 disproving Rockafellar's conjecture that sums of maximally monotone operators remain maximally monotone.

The authors build counterexamples where two maximally monotone operators satisfy the interior-domain condition yet their sum is not maximally monotone, refuting Rockafellar's sum conjecture. One counterexample is constructed on c0 and another on l1 with its usual norm. A general construction theorem computes the monotone polar of a class of graphs, gives necessary and sufficient conditions for maximal monotonicity, and shows how a positive rank-one perturbation yields a nonmaximal sum.

A First-Principles Evaluation of Graph-Based Network Intrusion Detection Systems

GIDS-Eval framework reveals evaluation gaps in graph-based network intrusion detection; two crafted edges fully evade three detector-dataset pairs.

Researchers introduce GIDS-Eval, a framework decomposing graph-based network intrusion detection systems into six interchangeable stages to enable controlled comparisons. Surveying nine GIDS and reimplementing five, they find two crafted edges achieve full evasion against three of eight detector-dataset pairs, snapshot windows alone cause a mean 38.3% relative swing in average precision, and none of 18 replayed detector-dataset pairs can alert as events arrive. Their encoder-free GIDS-Lite control ranks first by AP on two of four datasets at up to 575x lower runtime.

AI models' written reasoning steps correspond to distinct internal patterns, a new study finds

KAIST and Naver AI Lab researchers show LLM reasoning steps like extraction and computation map to distinct activation patterns, strongest in middle layers.

Researchers at KAIST and Naver AI Lab defined eight recurring reasoning operations, including extraction, decomposition, formula recall, deduction, and computation, and showed they correspond to separable activation patterns in Qwen2.5-7B, Qwen3-8B, and Gemma4-31B on math tasks, with GPT-5 labeling solution segments. The separation peaks in middle layers, holds even when a computation step produces a wrong answer, and goes beyond surface-level token choice. Findings replicated on Llama-3-8B, and classifiers trained on Qwen3-8B transferred to GPQA-Diamond and MATH-500. The authors note that using internal states for error detection or mid-generation steering remains future work.

Discrete Beckmann Transport Models for One-Step Language Modeling and Reasoning

DBTM achieves one-step text generation via a time-independent transport map trained directly from data, removing pretrained teacher distillation.

Discrete Beckmann Transport Models (DBTM) build a time-independent flow whose autonomous transport map provably carries any point in ambient space to a fixed point on simplex vertices in a single step. The fixed-point property is characterized by a conservation equation whose residual can be minimized directly from data, eliminating the need for a teacher flow, distillation, and time conditioning. A partial-context interpolant extension turns additional function evaluations into refinement steps rather than ODE integration steps. On language modeling and reasoning tasks, DBTM's one- and few-step generation improves quality and accuracy over discrete diffusion and continuous flow baselines.

Does Syntax Matter? A Graph-Augmented Variational Topic Model for Computational Social Sciences

SCPTM graph-augmented variational topic model shows syntax aids topic diversity and descriptor quality but gains stem mainly from the variational encoder.

The Structural Contextual Probabilistic Topic Model represents corpora as heterogeneous document-word graphs with lexical and syntactic edges processed by a Graph Attention Network inside a VAE for mixed-membership topic distributions. Across four corpora, neural gains in document-topic alignment are attributable to the variational encoder rather than syntax, while graph-augmented variants improve topic diversity everywhere. Dependency paths add value on argumentative deliberative texts but are redundant in technical and institutional registers.

Optimal Rates for Agentic Networked Information Aggregation

Researchers close the Kearns–Roth–Ryu gap for agentic networked information aggregation, proving excess error is constant up to depth M^2 then Θ(M^2/D).

The paper studies a networked learning model where agents in a DAG each see only a subset of features and pass only their predictions forward. It sharpens the earlier lower bound to Ω(√(M/D)) for depth below M^2 and constructs M-covered paths of depth D ≥ M^2 achieving Ω(M^2/D) excess error, establishing the correct rate for both regression and logistic classification. It also shows excess error contracts geometrically along the path for any fixed distribution, ruling out a single instance that witnesses polynomial lower bounds at every depth.

MindTopo: Can Foundation Models Reason in Topological Space?

MindTopo benchmark with 11,030 topological tasks shows 14 multimodal LLMs reason better than they plan and remain far below human performance.

MindTopo is a benchmark of topological intuition across five properties grounded in cognitive science and formal topology: continuity, separation, order, enclosure, and knots, evaluated at reasoning and closed-loop planning levels. It contains 11,030 instances across 13 procedurally generated task types with controllable difficulty, benchmarking 14 multimodal LLMs plus agent configurations using image and video generation, including three video generative models. Every MLLM performs better on reasoning than on planning, and the best-performing model remains far below observed human performance. On Qwen3-VL-2B-Instruct, supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning improve reasoning more than planning, and audited generated rollouts often fail to follow environment dynamics or preserve topology across transitions.

AI Doesn't Mean the End of Mathematics—at Least Not Yet

Schneier and Rafi argue frontier AI models produce notable mathematical results but cannot yet build genuinely new conceptual frameworks.

Bruce Schneier and Kasra Rafi, writing in The Guardian, argue current AI models are not yet as capable as experienced academic mathematicians despite striking results. They cite OpenAI's disproof of the unit distance conjecture, Anthropic's published cryptanalysis results, and Claude's attempt at the Riemann hypothesis as achievements in counterexample search and recombining known techniques. They contend AI has not yet developed substantial new conceptual frameworks, though they expect that capability sooner rather than later.

Thought without systematicity? Evaluating reasoning models on rule induction tasks

Study finds reasoning models often fail on structurally equivalent variants of tasks they solve, suggesting their reasoning lacks systematicity.

The paper extends rule induction tasks from cognitive science using task isomorphisms such as recombination and substitution to test systematicity in reasoning models. Despite solving tasks correctly, models frequently fail on structurally equivalent variants of the same task. The authors conclude many model behaviors lack systematicity, making it difficult to establish cognitive abilities beyond the specific evaluation contexts.

Mathematicians want proof OpenAI didn’t use their work

Mathematician Andreas Thom publicly accused OpenAI of opacity over whether ChatGPT conversations contributed to its non-sofic groups mathematics result.

A second mathematician, Andreas Thom, accused OpenAI of 'dishonest' behavior and insufficient transparency about training data after OpenAI announced a result in non-sofic groups, Thom's area of expertise. He emailed OpenAI researchers Sébastien Bubeck and Mark Sellke asking whether his ChatGPT interactions fed training or reasoning, but found the answers did not rule out indirect use. The dispute follows Tristan Buckmaster's questions about the Millennium Prize Navier-Stokes solution, where OpenAI denied using specific user data but could not rule out de-identified usage data. Researchers told The Verge they worry such competition with AI labs will make mathematics more secretive.

Unsolved Problem by Fields Medalist Breached by Two High School Students

Two high school students used Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol to help solve an open Lorentzian polynomials problem, posting a 75-page arXiv proof.

Aayush Bathija and Prince Rohatgi of Oak Park High School, mentored by UCLA postdoc Daniel Soskin, published the 75-page paper 'Bounded Ratios for Lorentzian Polynomials' (arXiv 2609.05341), solving an open problem in Fields Medalist June Huh's Lorentzian polynomial theory. The main structural theorem extends bounded coefficient-ratio characterization from quadratic to arbitrary-degree polynomials via discrete convexity conditions. The students used Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol for exploration and proof ideas but independently verified all arguments; the result follows an open letter from 25 Fields Medalists voicing concerns about AI's impact on mathematical rigor.

Beneath the Surface of Chains-of-Thought: A Mechanistic Interpretation of Reasoning Operations in LLMs

Study shows LLM reasoning operations like planning and deduction are geometrically separable in hidden states, with separability peaking in middle layers.

Researchers investigate whether functional reasoning operations — problem formulation, goal decomposition, deduction — have corresponding geometric structure in LLM hidden representations. They find operations are separable in held-out representations with separability peaking in middle layers, ruling out lexical and positional confounds; token-wise operation alignment becomes more distributed across layers, and identical surface tokens are represented differently depending on their surrounding chunk. Attention-masking interventions show chunk-onset operation-aligned representations depend on preceding reasoning context; code is released on GitHub (naver-ai/beneath-cot).

Characterizing Language Generation in the Limit: Finite Witnesses and a Separation-Width Hierarch

New work characterizes language generation in the limit via finite witnesses, proves a full separation-width hierarchy, and formalizes all results in Lean.

The paper fully characterizes when language generation in the limit is possible for arbitrary families over a countable universe: each target must admit a finite positive witness such that targets activated by any finite sample share an infinite common intersection. It defines positive separation width and proves every level of the resulting hierarchy occurs, with countable families admitting singleton witnesses and unions of families with infinite common cores requiring unbounded finite witnesses. The characterization, a universal normalization, and a diagonal capture lemma are machine-checked in the Lean proof assistant, with the development maintained on GitHub.

Decomposition Buys Integrity, Not Yield

Study of 600 production deep-research traces finds agent-tree decomposition loses findings at rate N^(1-δ); flat architectures maximize yield.

The paper models multi-agent decomposition as a tree where an agent holding b items retains each with probability r(b); with r(b)=1/b every tree delivers exactly one finding regardless of shape. Analysis of 600 production deep-research traces estimates delta=0.34 retention decay, and 1,012 annotated traces show one brief in sixteen goes off-target per tier, giving an alignment penalty of 0.536. Depth still cuts root context exposure from N to N^(1/k) and is cheaper at scale, with a hazard model over 743,819 production tool calls showing delegation is an opening move rather than a response to filling context.

The paper critically reviews On-Policy Self-Distillation (OPSD), where a language model trains on its own generations scored token-by-token by a teacher conditioned on privileged information such as reference solutions or environment feedback. It identifies collapse, the progressive narrowing of producible reasoning paths, as the dominant failure mode and analyzes it through three levers: signal weighting, the nature of privileged information, and teacher dynamics. The review is restricted to mathematical reasoning, reports no new experiments, and offers a shared vocabulary separating settled findings from disputed ones.
