Ex-Deepmind VP Vinyals says AI self-improvement is coming but won't trigger an intelligence explosion

Ex-DeepMind research VP Oriol Vinyals says recursive self-improvement is coming but slow, and co-founds Discovery Loop with Jeff Dean to automate research.

Oriol Vinyals, former VP of Research at Google DeepMind who worked on AlphaStar, AlphaCode, and Gemini, argued at Agentic AI Summit 2026 that recursive self-improvement will progress gradually without an intelligence explosion. He identifies idea generation ('research taste') and evaluation as the two biggest bottlenecks, noting benchmarks like SWE-Bench Pro and ML-Bench mostly test the already-working steps and suffer from overfitting and scheming. He is co-founding Discovery Loop with Jeff Dean as CEO, Sanjay Ghemawat, and Quoc Le to automate the full research cycle, starting with AI research.

Kiteworks Acquires Bonfy.AI to Fill the AI Gap in Data Governance

Kiteworks acquired AI data-security firm Bonfy.AI, reportedly for tens of millions of dollars, to add inline AI-era data governance.

Kiteworks announced the acquisition of Bonfy.AI, an AI-native content-security platform that classifies sensitive data in real time as it moves across email, file sharing, SaaS apps, and AI agents. The deal, estimated by CTech at tens of millions of dollars, will extend Kiteworks' Data Control Plane with inline runtime policy enforcement for both human and AI-agent workflows. This is Kiteworks' eighth acquisition in five years; Bonfy was founded in early 2024, raised a $9.5 million seed round, and emerged from stealth in June 2025.

Linux Foundation takes on TRACE, a hardware-backed runtime evidence specification for AI agents

The Linux Foundation adopts TRACE, an OPAQUE-contributed spec giving AI agents hardware-attested, cryptographically verifiable runtime and compliance evidence.

The Linux Foundation accepted the TRACE (Trust, Runtime Attestation and Compliance Evidence) specification contributed by OPAQUE, developed with AMD, Intel, Microsoft, and the Technology Innovation Institute. TRACE binds runtime environment, software, policies, data classifications, and tool usage into a portable, cryptographically verifiable artifact, composing existing standards such as RATS, EAT, SLSA, SCITT, SPIFFE, and EAR. It recorded nearly 135,000 PyPI downloads within 10 weeks of its June 2026 introduction, and its technical workstream will be hosted by the Coalition for Secure AI.

AI Changed the Exposure Problem. Validation Needs to Change With It.

Picus Security argues vulnerability validation must combine exploitability, control validation, and agentic pentesting as AI accelerates disclosure volume.

Picus Security reports 35,853 CVEs were published in H1 2026, roughly 49% more than the prior year, while only 495 were catalogued as exploited in the wild and 116 were attacked on disclosure day. The vendor argues CVSS-based triage is inadequate and promotes combining exploitability validation, security control validation, and agentic pentesting into one program. The post also cites Anthropic data showing Mythos-class models surfaced 26,153 open-source vulnerability candidates with only 421 patched upstream, and promotes Picus's Validation Summit '26 on October 14-15.

When the Whole Company Adopts AI: What It Does to Your SOC

Analysis of 16.9 million SOC alerts finds AI-related alerts at 0.43%, growing 685% since February, with 94.1% noise and 0.02% real attacks.

A review of roughly 16.9 million SOC alerts found about 73,000 (0.43%) were AI-related, a share that grew 685% between February and June 2026. Of AI-related alerts, 94.1% were noise, 5.8% genuine risks, and 0.02% real attacks; 79.8% received benign verdicts, 81.7% were automatically suppressed, and only 5.4% reached a human analyst. The only confirmed attacks were phishing campaigns that weaponized AI brand names as lures, while developer coding agents spawning shells and reading credential stores routinely tripped detections written before AI agents existed.

Beijing Hits Back at Anthropic CEO’s Call to Curb China’s AI Development

China's Foreign Ministry rejected Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call to curb Chinese AI development as 'Cold War playbook' fearmongering.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs pushed back against Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's essay warning that a Chinese AI lead would endanger the US, with spokesperson Guo Jiakun saying fearmongering and vicious competition disrupt global AI governance. Amodei urged continued restrictions on cutting-edge AI chip sales to China and predicted AI agents could take over the internet within 6-12 months without a global slowdown. The exchange precedes a planned September 24 Trump-Xi meeting covering AI governance, and follows a joint FBI/NSA/CISA advisory alleging Chinese developers distilled capabilities from Claude and GPT.

Hackers target exposed Vite dev servers to steal AWS, Azure secrets

Mass scanning campaign exploits CVE-2026-39364 in exposed Vite dev servers to steal AWS, Azure, and Terraform credentials.

F5 honeypots detected over 800 attacks and roughly 32,000 events in a month against internet-exposed Vite development servers, abusing CVE-2026-39364 (file access control bypass in Vite 7.1.0-7.3.2 and 8.x before 8.0.5) via parameters like ?raw and ?import&raw. Attackers used extensive wordlists to harvest .env files, AWS/Azure credentials, Terraform state, and /proc/self/environ, with double-encoded traversal to bypass WAFs. The same IPs also leveraged older Vite flaws CVE-2025-30208, actively-exploited CVE-2025-31125, and CVE-2024-45811, primarily from US, Belgium, and Netherlands using Google Cloud ranges.
