An Open-Source End-to-End FHE Implementation for Privacy-Preserving Llama 3 8B Inference

Odin runs Llama-3-8B fully homomorphic encrypted inference on a single H100 in 366 seconds, a 4.51x speedup over THOR.

Odin is an open-source end-to-end GPU CKKS implementation for privacy-preserving Llama-3-8B inference that co-designs ciphertext packing with model execution. A feature-major cross-layer layout unifies residual connections and layer interfaces, while transient intra-operator layouts serve linear projections and attention, avoiding intermediate repacking of QK^T softmax outputs. Minimax polynomial approximation with input-range control reduces polynomial degree and multiplicative depth for nonlinear ops. With 128-token input, Odin evaluates all 32 Transformer layers on one NVIDIA H100 80 GB in 366.4 s using 58.9 GiB peak memory, versus 1651.9 s for the THOR baseline, a 4.51x speedup.

PuzzleMask: Abusing Plain Prose as a Covert AI Attack Vector

Check Point details PuzzleMask, a plain-prose technique that bypasses LLM gatekeeper policy checks, letting hidden payloads reach target models unreviewed.

Check Point Research describes PuzzleMask, a prompt-crafting technique that hides policy-violating payloads inside plain-English prose wrappers, bypassing quick LLM-based policy checks without emojis, Base64, or invisible formatting. The researchers tested 23 automated prompts against gatekeepers including GPT-4o-mini, GPT-OSS-Safeguard 20b, Claude 3 Haiku, and Llama Guard 3, and all were classified as safe despite policies that flagged the plain versions. When submitted to GPT-5 in thinking-high mode with a Python interpreter, the target model extracted and acted on the payload in over 90% of trials. The technique is not itself a jailbreak but can carry a jailbreak prompt as payload; mitigations include input paraphrasing, hardened gatekeeper policies, and output monitoring.

Mind2Dialogue: Training Human-Aware Language Models by Simulating User Mental States

Mind2Dialogue simulates users' mental states to generate privileged supervision, boosting personalization and preference-following in Qwen, Llama, and OLMo assistants.

The Mind2Dialogue framework uses a psychology-guided simulator that preserves personal characteristics while updating user mental states through interaction, driving coherent conversations and an Oracle assistant's responses. Privileged distillation trains models on the Oracle's well-informed responses so they can assist users without direct access to mental states at deployment. Training on the full corpus improves every reported personalization metric over Qwen, Llama, and OLMo instruction-tuned baselines, including 26.6 to 40.9 percentage point gains in preference-following generation.

From Parameters to Answers: How LLMs Retrieve and Use Their Internal Knowledge

Interpretability study traces how Qwen, Llama, and Gemma route query information and internal knowledge across layers when answering questions.

Researchers used layerwise interventions on hidden states to separate query-routing signals from target knowledge in language models, testing Qwen, Llama, and Gemma on country-continent questions with varied answer types. A pair-conditioned request direction strengthens before interventions alter downstream knowledge, opening a causal window while answer-supporting content is still forming. Trajectories differ by model: Gemma shows a partially overlapping mid-layer routing profile, while Llama has no sustained routing-effect window under the same gates.

Training a 3.8B LLM to 0.384 CORE for $998 – Hugo Vergnes

Independent developer Hugo Vergnes trained a 3.8B-parameter Llama-style model to 0.384 CORE on 65B tokens for $998 in 43 hours on rented B200s.

Hugo Vergnes trained little-lm, a 3.848B-parameter decoder-only LLM, on 65.3B tokens in 43 hours for $998 using rented NVIDIA B200s, scoring 0.384 on the CORE benchmark and beating nanochat d32 (0.310) at similar cost. The Llama-style architecture uses RMSNorm, RoPE, GQA with 24 query and 8 KV heads, relu-squared MLPs, QK-norm, and ResFormer-style value embeddings that account for 19% of parameters. Key wins included the Muon optimizer for matrix parameters, a trapezoidal learning-rate schedule with linear cooldown, FP8 training plus vocabulary padding for roughly 33% throughput gains, and the ClimMix dataset over FineWeb-Edu. The project, inspired by Karpathy's nanochat, was built as a config-driven YAML framework for small LLM training.

LLM-Based Schema-Aware Split Learning for Privacy-Preserving Mental Distress Prediction Across Heterogeneous Surveys

Schema-aware split learning uses LLaMA-3.2-3B-Instruct as shared semantic encoder to harmonize heterogeneous mental-health surveys while raw data stays local.

The paper proposes a schema-aware split learning framework where an LLM serializes heterogeneous mental health survey records into natural language and is fine-tuned via LoRA, partitioned across client and server. Clients keep raw survey responses local and run only a lightweight front-end while the resource-intensive backbone runs server-side. Using LLaMA-3.2-3B-Instruct, the framework attains an average ANLS of 0.708 with 2,000 training samples, beats federated learning in eight of nine settings, and cuts per-client computation by three orders of magnitude while generalizing to unseen datasets.

Decomposition-Guided Diffusion Language Models for Inertial Confinement Fusion Prediction

ICF-DLM, the first language-model-based inertial confinement fusion predictor, cuts peak-timing error from 11.6 to 9.2 steps versus LLaMA-3-8B.

Each National Ignition Facility shot costs roughly one million dollars, motivating accurate AI surrogates for predicting 512-step neutron-rate waveforms from laser pulses and target parameters. ICF-DLM combines physics-typed decomposition into yield, peak timing, and local waveform; bidirectional denoising that defers commitment to peak location; and a physics-driven PPO reward. On ICFBench (50,000 simulations plus 232 experimental shots) it outperforms a matched autoregressive LLaMA-3-8B, classical sequence models, and LLM-based time-series predictors.

A Zeroth-Order Paradigm for LLM Preference Alignment

Researchers propose ComPO, a zeroth-order comparison-based preference alignment method with convergence guarantees that mitigates likelihood displacement in LLMs.

ComPO extracts directional information from preference pairs via comparison oracles instead of optimizing a differentiable preference loss, addressing likelihood displacement in direct alignment methods. The paper establishes convergence guarantees for the offline scheme and introduces an online variant with reverse-KL control using unlabeled policy generations. Experiments on Mistral, Llama, Gemma-2, Gemma-3, and Qwen3 models show improvements over existing direct alignment methods, including length-controlled win rates.

Before You Poll with LLMs: A Deliberative Diagnostic Framework

Deliberative diagnostic shows all five tested frontier LLMs misrepresent human belief shifts after arguments, with GPT-5.1 reversing on outgroup questions.

The Deliberative Polling Diagnostic Framework compares human and LLM persona belief shifts after identical informational interventions, using data from America in One Room (526 personas, 72 questions). All five frontier models tested failed uniquely: GPT-5.1 exhibited partisan reversal (80% on outgroup vs 26% on policy questions), Gemini 2.0 Flash, Claude Sonnet 4.5 and Llama 3.3 70B overshot at 5-7x human magnitude, and DeepSeek V3 showed near-zero change (rigidity). The authors term the underlying signature 'self-sycophancy', conformity to the model's internal persona stereotype rather than reasoning from provided information.

SpliTEE: Improving LLM Inference on Trusted Hardware with Differentially Private GPU Outsourcing

SpliTEE splits LLM inference between Intel TDX trusted execution and untrusted GPUs, using differential privacy instead of encryption to protect intermediate representations.

SpliTEE extends split inference to LLMs, running inference partly inside an Intel TDX TEE while masking intermediate inputs sent to untrusted GPUs with differential privacy rather than encryption. The authors show a prompt-reconstruction attack recovers nearly 80% of prompts from unmasked intermediate representations, motivating the masking. A global sensitivity analysis bounds the required DP noise scale, avoiding quantization and keeping models in floating point. The implementation is nearly twice as fast as full CPU-based TDX inference and 5-15 seconds faster than encryption-based Slalom with higher accuracy, evaluated on Llama-3.2-3B and Qwen3-4B.

Decoy Direction Optimization: A Post-Hoc Defense Against LLM Abliteration

Researchers introduce Decoy Direction Optimization, a cheap weight-editing defense that blinds refusal-direction ablation attacks against open-weight LLM safety guardrails.

Refusal Feature Ablation bypasses safety guardrails in open-weight LLMs by projecting out a linear refusal direction, often with high attack success rates. Decoy Direction Optimization injects a high-magnitude nonlinear decoy into MLP neurons so attackers' contrastive estimators ablate a harmless orthogonal feature instead. Evaluated across six model families, DDO keeps ASR below 10% under standard RFA and on Llama-3-8B-Instruct reduces Heretic weight-level attack ASR from 88.7% to 18%. It costs 30 to 450 times less per configuration than trained defense baselines.

Pick Your Poison: Learning to Select Poison Sets for Stronger LLM Backdoor Attacks

Poison set selection swings LLM backdoor attack success from 3% to 80%; SAILS boosts held-out success by 30 points.

The paper shows that random poison set selection severely underestimates worst-case backdoor vulnerability: across three LLaMA-3-8B settings with fixed model, clean data, and poison count, attack success ranges from 3% to 80% depending only on which poison set is chosen. The authors formalize poison selection as oracle-budgeted set optimization and introduce SAILS, which learns a set scorer from a few hundred finetune-and-evaluate runs, ranks millions of candidate sets, and audits a shortlist. SAILS improves held-out attack success by 30 percentage points over the strongest influence baselines, transfers from small-scale to full-scale finetuning, and extends to code-generation, agentic, and API-only backdoors.

AI models' written reasoning steps correspond to distinct internal patterns, a new study finds

KAIST and Naver AI Lab researchers show LLM reasoning steps like extraction and computation map to distinct activation patterns, strongest in middle layers.

Researchers at KAIST and Naver AI Lab defined eight recurring reasoning operations, including extraction, decomposition, formula recall, deduction, and computation, and showed they correspond to separable activation patterns in Qwen2.5-7B, Qwen3-8B, and Gemma4-31B on math tasks, with GPT-5 labeling solution segments. The separation peaks in middle layers, holds even when a computation step produces a wrong answer, and goes beyond surface-level token choice. Findings replicated on Llama-3-8B, and classifiers trained on Qwen3-8B transferred to GPQA-Diamond and MATH-500. The authors note that using internal states for error detection or mid-generation steering remains future work.

You Can't Prefer Emotions You Don't Sample: Intensity Undershoot in DPO-Tuned LLMs

Study quantifies DPO-tuned LLMs undershooting requested emotional intensity, tracing the gap to candidate-pool extremity rather than conditioning format.

Conditioning an instruction-tuned LLM on continuous valence-arousal targets yields gain of only 0.26 for valence and 0.13 for arousal on Llama-3.1-8B, far below faithful control of 1.0. The authors attribute undershoot to neutral-heavy preference corpora like EmoBank and candidate pools lacking extreme affect, leaving DPO without extreme exemplars. Uniform target coverage with a hotter candidate pool raises valence gain to 0.40 on Llama-3.1-8B and 0.44 on Qwen3-8B, with modest in-distribution cost; arousal gains remain unstable across seeds.

AI "Mind Viruses" Can Spread Between Agents Through Persistent Prompt Files

Anthropic and EPFL researchers showed self-propagating payloads can spread between AI agents via persistent system-prompt files, though no in-the-wild spread was found.

A preprint released August 10, 2026 by Anthropic and EPFL researchers demonstrates that "mind virus" payloads can propagate between AI agents through persistent files such as SOUL.md and MEMORY.md that are injected into system prompts after context resets. In simulated agent chains modeled on OpenClaw, payloads stored in SOUL.md accounted for 88% of propagation attempts and succeeded 55% of the time, versus 17% success for ordinary workspace files; tested payloads ranged from crypto-ad text files to home-directory deletion. Susceptibility varied by model and configuration: Claude Sonnet 4.6 resisted and removed planted payloads, while DeepSeek V3.2, Qwen 3.5 32B, and Gemini 3 Flash adopted an ideological payload, and a one-paragraph warning in the system prompt reduced spread to near zero across 150+ adversarial payloads. No successful agent-to-agent propagation was found in the wild in archived Moltbook posts, and Anthropic's Frontier Red Team separately observed multiagent "turf wars" between unaware model instances sharing a codebase.

Teaching Everyone to Fish for Tokens

Analysis argues open-source AI now depends heavily on Nvidia's financing, with a reported $26 billion bet shaping the open-weights ecosystem's future.

An Interconnects essay examines whether the open-source model recipe, exemplified by Ai2's Olmo and Nvidia's Nemotron releases, can become economically self-sustaining. It reports Nvidia is spending roughly $26 billion on near-open-source models to drive demand for its chips, and argues the open ecosystem faces an existential financing window over the next few years. The author predicts open models may fork toward efficiency, specialization, and on-prem enterprise agents rather than competing head-on with closed frontier labs.

Bad Likert Judge: A Novel Multi-Turn Technique to Jailbreak LLMs by Misusing Their Evaluation Capability

Unit 42 details the Bad Likert Judge multi-turn jailbreak that abuses LLMs' evaluation capability, raising attack success rates over 60% across six frontier models.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 describes the Bad Likert Judge technique, a multi-turn jailbreak that asks a target LLM to act as a Likert-scale judge scoring the harmfulness of example responses. The highest-rated example in each scale can carry harmful content, bypassing the model's internal guardrails. Testing across six state-of-the-art text-generation LLMs showed an average attack success rate increase of more than 60% versus plain attack prompts, with tested models anonymized. The technique targets edge cases rather than typical use, and the article positions the work as guidance for defenders on potential jailbreak risks.

Malicious MCP Servers Can Split Instructions to Make AI Coding Agents Exfiltrate Secrets

ASSET Research Group's GhostSplice technique splits malicious instructions across MCP channels, tricking AI coding agents into exfiltrating SSH keys, source code, and secrets.

ASSET Research Group disclosed GhostSplice, a prompt-injection technique in which a malicious Model Context Protocol (MCP) server splits an exfiltration instruction across a tool description and a tool result so no single fragment appears harmful. In the reference implementation, a benign-looking integrity_checker tool with fields alpha through delta is later paired with a project-scan result mapping those fields to .ssh/id_rsa, proprietary source, customers.csv, and .env. Tests across eleven API-tested models showed average compliance rising from 42% to 82% when instructions were split in two, with GPT-4o, Gemini 2.0 Flash, and Llama 3.3 70B going from 0% to 100%. The findings come from controlled lab tests, not a reported real-world intrusion, and no CVE identifiers had been assigned as of August 10, 2026.
