AWS Certificate Manager sets 2027 end date for email-validated certificate renewals

AWS Certificate Manager will phase out email validation for public certificates during 2027, requiring migration to DNS validation before September 30, 2027.

AWS Certificate Manager will stop offering email validation in new Regions on January 1, 2027, discontinue it for new certificate requests on March 31, 2027, and stop renewing email-validated certificates on September 30, 2027. This precedes the CA/Browser Forum's March 15, 2028 deadline ending email-based domain validation for publicly trusted certificates. AWS is updating the UpdateCertificateOptions API so customers can switch to DNS validation in place while retaining the certificate ARN, with Route 53 support for creating required CNAME records.

Week in review: Linux rootkit deployed on F5 BIG-IP APM devices, Cisco FMC bugs exploited

Weekly roundup: Cisco FMC and N-able N-central zero-days exploited in the wild, MikroTik RouterOS hijacks, Microsoft Patch Tuesday ships two exploited zero-days.

State-sponsored and financially-motivated attackers are actively exploiting CVE-2026-20079, a critical authentication bypass in Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center (FMC), alongside CVE-2026-20316. N-able issued an emergency hotfix for CVE-2026-86218, a critical pre-auth RCE in the N-central RMM platform exploited in the wild. CERT Polska disclosed six RouterOS vulnerabilities being chained to hijack internet-exposed MikroTik devices. Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday shipped a record patch count including two zero-days, while roughly 67,000 Trezor customers faced phishing after a shipping-partner breach and researchers privately disclosed a zero-click WeChat worm to Tencent.

Mars Security Debuts Automated Threat Engine Processing Live Cyber Intelligence Into Validated Rules Within Minutes

Mars Security launches Real-Time Intel-Based Detection, converting threat intelligence advisories into validated, ATT&CK-mapped detection rules within minutes for SOCs.

Mars Security, an autonomous threat hunting and detection engineering platform founded by former offensive security operators, announced Real-Time Intel-Based Detection. The capability ingests advisories from sources like CISA, Mandiant, Unit 42, and Microsoft Threat Intelligence, maps indicators to MITRE ATT&CK, and authors native query logic across connected infrastructure including CrowdStrike Falcon, Wiz, Splunk, Sysmon, identity providers, Snowflake, and Databricks. Every rule is backtested against 30 days of historical telemetry to quantify false positives before analyst approval and one-click deployment. The feature is free for existing customers and available via AWS Marketplace.

Mars Security brings threat intelligence to detection in real time

Mars Security launched Real-Time Intel-Based Detection, converting advisories from CISA and Mandiant into backtested MITRE ATT&CK-mapped detection rules for CrowdStrike, Wiz, and Splunk.

Mars Security announced a capability that automatically turns newly published threat intelligence from sources like CISA, Mandiant, Unit 42, and Microsoft into MITRE ATT&CK-mapped detection rules. Each rule is written in the native query language of the customer's telemetry (CrowdStrike Falcon, Wiz, Splunk, firewalls, identity providers, AWS, Snowflake, Databricks) and backtested against 30 days of the customer's data before deployment, with indicator scoring to drop noisy or stale indicators. The platform also maps existing detection coverage, flags gaps such as AWS CloudTrail tampering and pass-the-hash movement, and delivers some recommendations as open pull requests for detection-as-code workflows.

Mars Security Launches Real-Time Intel-to-Detection Engine That Turns Live Threat Intelligence Into Backtested Detections in Minutes

Mars Security launched Real-Time Intel-Based Detection, converting advisories into MITRE ATT&CK-mapped, backtested detection rules for CrowdStrike, Wiz, and Splunk within minutes.

The capability turns newly published threat intelligence from CISA, Mandiant, Unit 42, and Microsoft Threat Intelligence into validated detection rules within minutes, each backtested against 30 days of the customer's own telemetry before deployment. Rules are written in native query languages across CrowdStrike Falcon, Wiz, Splunk, firewalls, Linux Sysmon, identity providers, AWS telemetry, and data lakes such as Snowflake and Databricks, with no data ingestion or stack changes. The feature is available at no additional cost to existing customers and on AWS Marketplace. Mars also flags detection coverage gaps and extends monitoring to credentials leaked by AI coding agents.

OpenAI Builds ‘Defense Factory’ as AI Agents Gain Ability to Chain Cyber Exploits

OpenAI unveiled a Defense Factory using AI agents to continuously discover, validate, patch, and verify vulnerabilities, warning the defender's window against agentic attackers is shrinking.

OpenAI describes a Defense Factory workflow where AI agents integrate source control, scanners, issue trackers, and secret stores to discover, reproduce, patch, and verify vulnerabilities under human oversight. The approach responds to agentic attackers that can retain knowledge across sessions and chain vulnerabilities into multi-stage attack paths faster than human triage can respond, which OpenAI calls a shrinking defender's window. During an internal security sprint involving 250+ people across 100+ service areas, agents closed 53 urgent or high-priority issues on day one, achieved 90.6% ownership-routing acceptance, cut 37% of findings as duplicates, and produced Codex-generated patches with a 0.53% rollback rate. Runtime validation reduced false positives to 0.81%, and each agent operates in isolated, reproducible environments with a control plane for policy and credentials.

Bag of Tricks or Bag of Myths? Reducing Modeling Complexity with Task Knowledge in Explainable Suicide Risk Assessment

Researchers audit 31 NLP techniques for clinician-annotated suicide risk prediction, finding only 5 of 31 comparisons yield reliable gains.

A study of 1,635 clinician-annotated social media posts ran roughly 300 controlled experiments across 7 methodological families, auditing techniques such as model scaling, synthetic data, ensembling, and threshold tuning under severe class imbalance. The proposed system reformulates risk factor prediction as entailment between posts and codebook definitions, using architecturally diverse ensembles with class-balanced training and deployment-consistent calibration. It scores 0.8203 for risk, 0.7953 for evidence, and 0.7045 macro-F1 for factors, ranking third among 53 teams.

Top AI spenders cut per-employee costs by nearly 10 percent in August

Ramp's September AI Index shows top AI spenders' per-employee costs fell 9.7% in August as firms migrate from frontier models to cheaper standard models.

Ramp's September 2026 AI Index reports median per-employee AI spending at the top 1% of spenders fell 9.7% in August to $7,205, partly attributed to August vacations, falling token prices, and migration to cheaper models. The effective price per million tokens dropped 41% from its March 2026 peak to $0.68, and frontier models like Opus, Fable, and Sol fell from 53% to 45% of tokens consumed. Anthropic was paid for by 43.8% of US companies (up 0.34 points) versus 39.8% for OpenAI (up 0.09 points), while open-weight models remain marginal at 6.4% of AI-using firms.
