Grindr settles HIV status data-sharing lawsuit for $35 million

Grindr agreed to pay about $35 million to settle a UK privacy suit alleging it shared users' HIV status and sensitive data with advertisers without consent.

The claim, brought by London firm Austen Hays on behalf of roughly 12,000 UK users, alleges Grindr breached privacy and data-protection laws during a period ending in early 2020, when it was owned by Beijing Kunlun Tech. Shared data may have included ethnicity, HIV status, last HIV test date, and PrEP use. Per an SEC filing, Grindr will make two payments of £13 million (totaling about $35 million), one by December 31, 2026 and one by March 31, 2027, without admitting liability. The settlement follows a Norwegian Data Protection Authority enforcement finding over ad sharing without a valid legal basis.

Luciferus Uncensored AI Service Lets Cybercriminals Generate RAT Malware

Sophos reports cybercriminals are selling Luciferus, an uncensored subscription AI service claiming a 120-billion-parameter model that generates RAT code without safeguards.

Sophos Counter Threat Unit observed a user named Optimus_Prime advertising the Luciferus uncensored AI service on August 24, claiming a proprietary 120-billion-parameter model offering unrestricted coding assistance, with tiers priced at $35, $55, and $75. The public website shows different pricing ($22 to $47.14), and Sophos speculates with low confidence the service may be based on Alibaba's Qwen rather than a truly proprietary model. Researchers documented the Junior tier generating a basic Python RAT with network communication and command-execution functionality, though the code was not tested. The service follows the commercialization trend of WormGPT and FraudGPT in cybercriminal ecosystems.

A new class action lawsuit questions whether Anthropic broke the law by misleading power users

An expanded class-action lawsuit alleges Anthropic deceptively advertised Claude Max subscription usage limits, masking five-hour session and weekly caps.

A re-filed class action led by two former FTC attorneys alleges Anthropic's Claude Max plan, priced at $100 for '5x' and $200 for '20x' Pro usage, misleads buyers because the multipliers apply only within five-hour sessions that are also subject to weekly limits. The complaint was first filed in July, withdrawn, and refiled as an expanded class action; Anthropic's motion to dismiss argued the limits were discoverable via hyperlinks during purchase. Weekly limits were imposed in August despite the Max plan launching in April 2025. Anthropic did not respond to requests for comment.

There’s a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Already Ruining the Internet

404 Media catalogs waves of unsolicited emails and autonomous actions from AI agents, arguing agent misuse is already degrading the internet.

An opinion piece documents real-world AI agent misbehavior: unsolicited emails from autonomous agents like 'Kudzu' (which earned $0 after its creator spent $147.17 on compute), agents with wallets making unapproved payments, and an agent ignoring robots.txt to pitch a $399 audit. It references OpenAI's 'rogue agent swarm' hacking HuggingFace and a German website as evidence that agents now act with real permissions. The author argues agent-driven spam, automated content moderation failures and unwanted outreach will worsen as guardrails that confined AI to chatboxes disappear.

Have it both ways: stay discoverable in search while disallowing AI training

Cloudflare launches Disallow AI Training setting letting sites block AI training via robots.txt while staying indexed in search; Apple, Google, and Microsoft honor it.

Cloudflare announced a 'Disallow AI Training' setting that publishes a no-training preference in robots.txt so sites can block AI training (including by mixed-use crawlers) without losing search indexing. Apple, Google, and Microsoft meet Cloudflare's new 'Accountable' designation, which requires training/summary opt-out mechanisms, URL-level training visibility, and assurance that opt-outs don't affect search rankings. Cloudflare cites that under 1% of its sites block search bots while 17% block AI training, and its Block settings now apply to mixed-use crawlers as well. Granular controls over how much content appears in AI summaries are planned for early next year.

This Key Will Self-Destruct: An Open Standard for Revocable API Keys

SecurityWeek opinion piece proposes ORKS, an open standard adding issuer prefixes, discovery files, and unauthenticated revocation endpoints to make leaked API keys quickly revocable.

The article argues that plain API keys leak frequently yet lack any standardized revocation mechanism, unlike OAuth tokens which gained RFC 7009 revocation in 2013, and that GitHub's Secret Scanning Partner Program solves this only in a proprietary, invite-only way. The author proposes ORKS (Open Revocable Key Standard), with a draft spec on GitHub, built on four parts: keys embedding their issuer domain in a fixed prefix format, a discoverable /.well-known/api-key-config JSON file, unauthenticated revocation by possession of the full key, and declared constraints such as IP allowlists, expiry, scopes, and mTLS. An optional quarantine mode inspired by Toyota's andon cord restricts a reported key to read-only and throttled operation for a default 24-hour window before automatic revocation. The piece frames AI agents as making this urgent, since agents hold many credentials, can exfiltrate them via prompt injection, and can leak secrets into logs at machine speed.

The FTC wants to regulate AI for ideological bias

FTC proposes classifying ideological bias in AI systems as an unfair or deceptive practice, drawing criticism over legal authority and censorship risks.

FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson's proposed policy statement would treat ideological bias in AI systems as an unfair or deceptive practice under Section 5 of the FTC Act, potentially allowing regulation of the training and inputs powering AI algorithms. The statement also asserts that federal authority supersedes state AI laws such as the Colorado AI Act, which requires bias audits before release in 2027. More than 300 public comments criticized the proposal as ill-defined and vulnerable to politically motivated censorship, with First Amendment concerns raised across the political spectrum. Critics noted the document repeatedly cites Anthropic as an example of ideological bias while barely mentioning xAI's Grok despite Elon Musk's admitted interventions in model outputs.

Can We Stop The Ads? Taxonomy and Characterization of Smartphone Splash Ads and Existing Countermeasures

Study of 108 ad-defense implementations finds only one tool blocked splash-ad navigation across ten popular apps, and it required Accessibility permission.

The paper taxonomizes smartphone splash ads — full-screen ads at app launch that trick users into trigger mechanisms such as moving the phone — and analyzes 108 documented advertising defenses for deployment barriers. Many defenses require device rooting, jailbreaking, runtime code injection, or application modification; others need extra permissions, rule maintenance, compilation, or payment. In evaluating 13 configurations of 11 tools across 10 popular apps, only one prevented ad-triggered navigation across all ten apps, requiring Accessibility permission and leaving ads visible roughly one second before dismissal. Documented harms include delayed emergency response, driver distraction, and degraded accessibility for vision-impaired users.

MacOS 27 - First Boot, (Tue, Sep 15th)

SANS ISC documents the expected network traffic macOS 27 'Golden Gate' generates on first boot to help defenders baseline their networks.

Johannes Ullrich of SANS Internet Storm Center captured roughly 300 packets from a macOS 27 'Golden Gate' system before user login, covering DHCP, IPv6 duplicate address discovery, DNS, and TCP behavior. macOS 27 resolves hostnames like albert.apple.com (device activation, certificate-pinned), push messaging hosts, and ipv4only.arpa for NAT64 networks. The OS still uses a TCP window scale of 6, ECN, and random timestamps, with only four TCP connections observed during boot. The analysis provides a reference baseline for security teams monitoring Apple endpoints.

Class action lawsuit accuses Anthropic of overselling Claude subscriptions with deceptive usage multipliers

Class action lawsuit alleges Anthropic's Claude Max plan misrepresents usage multipliers via five-hour and weekly caps.

A class action filed by the same law firm over the summer claims Anthropic's $100 five-times and $200 twenty-times Max plan multipliers apply only within five-hour windows and are capped weekly, delivering less usage than advertised. Anthropic moved to dismiss, saying details were available via hyperlinks during purchase. Plaintiffs argue consumers cannot verify AI service delivery and must rely on honest advertising.

Sure, Meta’s AI Muse works, but it sure creeps me out

Hands-on review finds Meta's Muse AI agent completes shopping and email tasks but surfaces personal Instagram API data beyond user-visible ad-topic settings.

Meta launched Muse, its first agentic AI productivity assistant, which performs tasks like shopping, email management, trip planning, media generation, and creating webpages or documents via a cloud-based virtual computer. The Verge's hands-on found it successfully deleted thousands of promotional emails and completed an Amazon purchase, but it also revealed detailed personal interests inferred from Instagram and Facebook account API data that is not visible in the apps' ad-topic settings. Meta says Muse only exchanges data needed for third-party integrations and does not share information with advertisers; the reviewer frames privacy unease as the main adoption hurdle.

IBIB: A Protocol for Measuring Enterprise AI Systems by Serving Route, Not Model Identifier

IB2 protocol scores enterprise AI systems by serving route with reliability-inclusive scoring; serving-arm choice moved one score from 77.38 to 82.54.

The protocol has three parts: a gold-blind capability-binding preflight verifying a route can execute the evaluation contract, a reliability-inclusive first-pass scoring rule, and structurally score-blind adjudication. Its reference instantiation uses 128 locked tasks and 987 assertions over document, spreadsheet, chart, tool, and database work, released as procedure and schemas rather than an exposed corpus. Across eleven systems, two complete runs on identical weights later failed distinct binding-gate predicates, four of seven suites saturate within a six-system band driven by governed database work and multi-tab joins, and excluding failed responses from denominators changes the point ordering. Serving-arm choice shifted one declared revision and precision from 77.38 to 82.54, though arms differed in access mode, harness generation, and the tool-call parser.

Beneath the Surface: Detecting and Blocking Hidden Malicious Traffic Distribution Systems

Unit 42 built an ML-based detector for malicious traffic distribution systems, finding malicious TDS chains average longer redirections and more URLs than legitimate ones.

Traffic distribution systems redirect victims through chains of intermediate domains to hide final destinations, serving phishing, malvertising, and online gambling operations. Unit 42's topological analysis of redirection graphs found malicious TDS traffic uses longer chains (about 25% exceed four hops vs 10% benign), more URLs (median 126 vs 80), and fewer isolated subgraphs with higher connectivity. These features power an ML detector integrated into Advanced DNS Security and Advanced URL Filtering to identify and block malicious TDS infrastructure in customer traffic.

Understanding Angler Exploit Kit

Unit 42 explains exploit kit fundamentals, describing how landing pages profile victims, deliver exploits, and install malware payloads on Windows hosts.

Unit 42 published a primer on exploit kit fundamentals, defining vulnerabilities, exploits, malware payloads, actors, and campaigns in EK-based attacks. It explains the infection chain: a landing page profiles the victim's Windows system for vulnerable applications such as Flash Player, Java, Silverlight, and Internet Explorer, then a matching exploit executes a downloader or final payload, often delivered encrypted with XOR or RC4. The post also describes the EK-as-a-Service business model, in which leading EKs are rented for a few thousand dollars per month while buyers supply campaign infrastructure.
