Spain gets its first taste of AI-aided cyber attack
Spain's AEPD reports the country's first data breach executed by an autonomous AI agent that scanned files and exploited vulnerabilities to access personal data.
Spain's data protection agency AEPD reported the country's first personal data breach caused by an autonomous AI agent powered by a known large language model. The agent scanned generic files, accessed the organization's system, and ran vulnerability scans to gain read/write access to files containing personal data and invoices. AEPD president Francisco Pérez Bes called for an immediate review of security and data protection models, noting the agency received a record 30,931 complaints in 2025, up 64% year-over-year.
HBO Max Reddit account compromised to serve ClickFix attacks
Attackers hijacked HBO Max's verified Reddit account to run 108 ClickFix malvertising ads delivering infostealers, loaders, and crypto clippers to Windows and macOS users.
Attackers compromised the verified HBO Max Reddit account (u/hbomax) to push 108 malicious ads in a 48-hour malvertising blitz named PasteSwitch, analyzed by Hudson Rock and ADAMnetworks. The ClickFix lures directed victims to fake landing pages instructing them to paste commands into Terminal, delivering OS-targeted infostealers, malware loaders, and cryptocurrency clippers. Lures included 46 HBO Max ads, 36 fake OpenAI Codex ads, 15 fake macOS disk utilities, and 11 developer-tool ads. The AnimateClipper and ZigClipper payloads use Binance Smart Chain contracts as resilient C2 fallback, with 36 mainnet changes observed between March and July 2026; Reddit paused the ads three days after discovery and is investigating.
Ukrainian lawyer's second career as a Conti coder earns him 4 years behind bars
Ukrainian lawyer turned Conti malware coder sentenced to four years in US prison, ordered to forfeit $25,042 in Bitcoin.
Oleksii Oleksiyovych Lytvynenko, 44, a trained lawyer who joined Conti under the handle "henry", pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and was sentenced to four years. He coded a malware loader, researched targets using Google and ZoomInfo, and possessed data stolen from eight US victims who reported over $1.5 million in losses. Investigators found Cobalt Strike running and a Rocket.Chat session over Tor on his laptop when Gardaí arrested him in County Cork, Ireland in July 2023; he was extradited to the US in October 2025. Conti attacked over 1,000 victims across 47 US states and 31 countries, with payouts exceeding $150 million by January 2022.
Cybercrooks trawl Fishbrain to net password hashes
Fishing app Fishbrain disclosed a breach exposing names, emails, and password hashes with salts for users of its 20-million-member platform.
Fishbrain AB disclosed to the California Attorney General's Office that attackers accessed user data on August 19, 2026, taking names, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, usernames, country information, password hashes, and salts. The company said passwords were not stored in plaintext but some hashes may be susceptible to cracking; it patched the exploited vulnerability, reset all user passwords, and restricted access to the affected environment. Fishbrain, which claims more than 20 million users, did not disclose how many accounts were affected or which hashing algorithm was used.
Cops, CrowdStrike disrupt Sality botnet by poisoning the network and diverting into sinkholes
Law enforcement and CrowdStrike disrupted the 23-year-old Sality P2P botnet, isolating 15,000+ infected machines and seizing linked domains.
International law enforcement, working with CrowdStrike and the Shadowserver Foundation, executed a peer-to-peer sinkhole operation against Sality, a botnet active since 2003 that delivered malware to more than 15,000 machines worldwide. Sality's primary payload for eight years was EggJagger, a clipboard hijacker that swaps copied bitcoin and ethereum wallet addresses with attacker-controlled ones, yielding at least $150,000 in stolen cryptocurrency. The US Justice Department, FBI, and DoD Office of Inspector General's Defense Criminal Investigative Service seized Sality-linked domains, with parallel action in Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania. The Shadowserver Foundation is coordinating with ISPs and CSIRTs to identify infections and notify victims.
