Network Abuses Leveraging High-Profile Events: Suspicious Domain Registrations and Other Scams
Unit 42 found scammers surge deceptive domain registrations around major events like the 2024 Paris Olympics to run phishing and counterfeit merchandise scams.
Unit 42 analyzed newly registered domains (over 200,000 detected daily from zone files, WHOIS, and passive DNS) containing event-specific keywords, using the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics as a case study. Threat actors register lookalike domains to sell counterfeit merchandise, push fraudulent services, and run phishing, as previously seen with COVID-19-themed and fake ChatGPT tool scams. The article recommends monitoring domain registrations, DNS and URL traffic trends, textual patterns, and verdict change requests to catch event-themed abuse early.
How to correlate Kubernetes audit logs with container runtime data
Elastic Security Labs shows how to join Kubernetes audit logs with Defend for Containers runtime data to investigate service account abuse and container escapes.
Elastic Security Labs demonstrates correlating Kubernetes audit logs with Defend for Containers (D4C) runtime telemetry in Elastic. In an Amazon EKS lab, a compromised workload service account performed discovery, read secrets, minted a token, created a privileged pod, and execed into it to attempt a container escape via nsenter and chroot. The escape wrappers appeared only in the decoded Kubernetes audit requestURI, not in runtime process events. The post covers join fields, prebuilt EQL sequence rules, and continues the control-plane correlation thread from the TeamPCP container attack scenario and the Hugging Face intrusion write-up.
WordPress Events Calendar Vulnerabilities Let Hackers Take Over 600,000 Websites
Two unauthenticated RCE flaws (CVSS 9.8) in The Events Calendar WordPress plugin threaten 600,000 sites; patched in 6.17.4.1.
Wordfence Argus disclosed two critical unauthenticated vulnerability chains in The Events Calendar WordPress plugin, tracked as CVE-2026-78006 and CVE-2026-78159, both scoring 9.8 CVSS. CVE-2026-78006 enables PHP object injection leading to RCE via a Lazy_Post_Collection gadget chain, while CVE-2026-78159 abuses Element_Classes::parse_array() to invoke wp_update_user() and reset the admin password. Exploitation works by injecting wp:legacy-widget Gutenberg markup through comments, using WordPress's moderation-preview hash to trigger the block before approval. StellarWP patched both flaws in version 6.17.4.1 after Wordfence's August 2026 disclosure.
Mapping out your unknown: A threat hunter’s guide to GitHub
Datadog Security Labs publishes a threat-hunting guide with audit-log queries to detect GitHub token theft, device code phishing, and source code exfiltration.
Datadog's threat-hunting guide covers GitHub audit log queries for detecting compromised accounts, stolen personal access tokens, and malicious OAuth app authorizations. Attackers typically obtain credentials through phishing, credential stuffing, leaked secrets, or device code phishing, then map private repositories, exfiltrate source code, and pivot into connected cloud and CI/CD environments. The guide maps detections to MITRE techniques like T1078 and T1528 and documents GitHub logging quirks affecting attribution, token metadata, and visibility fields.
Dataminr uses agentic AI to predict and verify security threats
Dataminr launches agentic AI capabilities for corporate security, adding automated event corroboration, context, and near-term threat prediction.
Dataminr Advanced for Corporate Security introduces Agentic Corroboration, Agentic Context, and Near-Term Predictive Intelligence, now generally available, moving the company from real-time alerting to what it calls Autonomous Real-Time Intelligence. The product relies on more than 60 fine-tuned task-specific LLMs trained on a 10+ year proprietary event archive rather than general-purpose frontier models. Upcoming releases include ReGenAI Tailored Live Briefs, a Watchlist Agent, Agentic Search, and an Advanced API suite.
Threat Brief: Ongoing Russia and Ukraine Cyber Activity
Ukrainian government sites were defaced via OctoberCMS CVE-2021-32648 while Microsoft-attributed actor DEV-0586 deployed destructive WhisperGate malware.
Unit 42 tracks January 2022 attacks against Ukrainian government websites that were defaced or made inaccessible, which Ukraine attributed to Russia. Attackers exploited CVE-2021-32648, an account takeover flaw in OctoberCMS prior to 1.0.472, by submitting a boolean true as the password reset code to bypass validation. Separately, WhisperGate malware, attributed by Microsoft to DEV-0586, disabled Windows Defender and corrupted files across multiple Ukrainian organizations, using a ransomware-appearing first stage and an HTTPS-beaconing second stage with LOLBINs and anti-analysis techniques.
