LLM-Based Penetration Testing in the Presence of Honeypots

Studies honeypot-aware budget allocation for LLM attack agents, showing detector-guided policies let agents skip deception and compromise real hosts efficiently.

The paper formalizes LLM attacker behavior against honeypots as a budgeted decision process, where agents choose to continue or skip targets when honeypot suspicion arises. A detector-guided policy lets LLM agents allocate execution budget effectively across a mixed host pool in a controlled testbed. Findings show LLM-driven attackers can reason about heterogeneous artifacts and use honeypot suspicion to guide target selection, challenging traditional deception defenses that rely on realism and obscurity against human or script-driven attackers.

Honeypot-Omaha and batch.py [Guest Diary], (Wed, Sep 2nd)

A SANS ISC guest diary describes batch.py, a Python tool that consolidates honeypot logs and enriches IOCs with threat intelligence data.

Written by a SANS.edu BACS intern, the diary explains analysis of the DShield Honeypot-Omaha sensor, which uses Cowrie to emulate SSH and Telnet and log attacker activity. The author's batch.py script implements a four-phase pipeline with SHA-256-generated master and guest authentication to consolidate JSON and log files, correlate data via external APIs, and produce MITRE, CVE, geolocation, threat-score and fingerprint enrichment for investigated indicators.

HoneyRoute: Honeypot-Model Routing for Adversarial LLM Serving

HoneyRoute detects malicious LLM serving requests and diverts them to a honeypot model, reaching F1 0.911 with 38 ms median added latency.

HoneyRoute is an inference-serving layer pairing a streaming router (a frozen 0.8B embedding backbone with per-domain MLP heads) with a dual-implementation honeypot and an analysis loop that converts trapped interactions into attacker fingerprints for router retraining. On a production trace plus a seven-domain attack corpus it matches 96% of a two-tier guard-LLM cascade's F1 at 1/385th of its latency with 0% evasion under 13 adversarial transformations. Diverting malicious traffic cuts production token consumption under GCG-suffix flooding by 97.8%, and loop training raises detection F1 to 0.933.

CISA Releases Guidance on Deploying Cyber Decoys

CISA issued guidance on deploying honeypots, honeytokens, and decoy systems to detect adversaries and gather threat intelligence in critical infrastructure.

CISA released guidance on deploying cyber decoys, including lures, tripwires, decoy artifacts, honeytokens, and honeypots, within critical infrastructure organizations to complement Zero Trust models. The guidance outlines a three-phase operational process of preparation, execution, and understanding, advising decoys be placed where users rarely interact and configured to produce high-fidelity alerts. It aims to help defenders detect adversaries who use legitimate credentials, native tools, and living-off-the-land techniques, while enabling cost-effective threat intelligence collection.

CISA promotes a fresh way to deter cyberattackers: Lie to them

CISA issued first-time guidance advising critical infrastructure operators to deploy honeypots, honeytokens, and decoys to detect and distract intruders.

CISA published 'Using Cyber Decoys to Strengthen Detection and Response,' a 22-page guide marking the agency's first guidance on decoys such as honeypots and honeytokens. Acting executive director Chris Butera described decoys as a low-cost, high-fidelity way to detect adversaries already inside networks, complementing zero-trust and assume-compromise approaches. The guidance covers decoy principles, definitions, deployment scenarios, and is aimed especially at resource-constrained critical infrastructure sectors.

The Machines Are Calling: Measuring Automated and Synthetic Voices in Unwanted Inbound Calls

Voice honeypot measurement finds at least 26.9% of unwanted US inbound calls open with machine voices, 13.1% with fresh synthetic speech.

An interactive voice honeypot using language-model personas on real US numbers recorded 10,987 calls over 66 days, following the FCC's February 2024 ruling that AI-generated voices fall under the TCPA. Of 7,233 greeted calls, 13.8% opened with recordings replayed from other calls and 13.1% with fresh audio labeled synthetic, with replays making up 45% of the detector's flagged rate. Synthetic openings concentrated in lead-generation spam (33.8%) rather than fraud (21.1%), and only 0.44% of calls disclosed automation. Prevalence tracked how long a bait number had circulated, and campaigns outlasted their numbers, with one synthetic voice serving nine campaigns.

What vulnerability prioritization looks like when KEV, EPSS, and CVSS disagree

Cohesity field CISO Joye Purser ranks KEV over EPSS over CVSS and urges 24-72 hour patching of exploited internet-facing systems.

In a Help Net Security interview, Cohesity Global Field CISO Joye Purser lays out a vulnerability prioritization framework that puts active exploitation (KEV) first, then exploit likelihood (EPSS), then technical severity (CVSS), adjusted for asset exposure, business criticality, and compensating controls. She endorses 24-72 hour remediation targets for critical exploited internet-facing vulnerabilities and describes the organizational tradeoffs and emergency procedures needed to hit them. The interview also covers honeypot failure modes when deception systems are over-connected or over-trusted, and budget guidance recommending OT/IT segmentation, phishing-resistant MFA, and tested recovery for a 400-person manufacturer.

OpenAI Astra Brings Autonomous Zero

OpenAI says Astra is its first model rated Critical for cybersecurity risk, able to autonomously find zero-days and build full exploit chains without human guidance.

OpenAI confirmed that Astra meets the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold of its Preparedness Framework, the first of its models classified at that level, meaning it can find unknown flaws and develop working exploits across well-defended systems without step-by-step human guidance. Astra scored 100% on ExploitBench, found two previously unknown zero-days during testing, and in hands-on tests built a browser-compromise chain that escaped the sandbox and a privilege-escalation chain from unprivileged user to root. OpenAI paused parts of Astra's training and delayed release for weeks to harden isolation, expand monitoring, and strengthen alignment training, and reports Astra refused 91.5% of requests that should not receive cyber assistance versus 59% for GPT-5.6 Sol. Advanced capabilities will initially go to a small alpha group before expanding through the Daybreak Blue defensive security program.

Tactical Threat Intelligence Explained: Benefits & Use Cases

Recorded Future explains tactical threat intelligence, covering attacker TTPs, IOC collection, and use in SOC detection, response, and control hardening.

Recorded Future published an explainer on tactical cyber threat intelligence, describing how it differs from strategic and operational intelligence by focusing on attacker tactics, techniques, and procedures. The piece outlines sources such as OSINT, dark web monitoring, malware analysis, and internal telemetry, and describes the intelligence lifecycle from collection through dissemination. It argues tactical CTI improves detection tuning, incident response, preventive controls, and resource allocation for SOC teams.
