Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday addresses a record 966 vulnerabilities, including 105 rated Critical, 81 of them remote code execution bugs. Two zero-days were actively exploited: a Windows Update Stack link-following flaw and a Windows ALPC heap-based buffer overflow, both allowing local elevation to SYSTEM privileges. The ALPC flaw was reported by Volexity and Proofpoint researchers, while the Update Stack flaw was credited to Romain Deperne and the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Centre. Microsoft shared no details on how the flaws were exploited in attacks.

Weedhack Malware Spreads via Fake Minecraft Clients and SEO Poisoning
McAfee Labs reports Weedhack malware spread via spoofed Minecraft client websites using SEO poisoning, with over 6,300 blocked access attempts.
McAfee Labs found multiple lookalike websites impersonating legitimate Minecraft clients (Glazed, Radium, Meteor, Nova, Xenon) still distributing Weedhack, a multi-stage malware whose JAR payloads collect system information, add Microsoft Defender exclusions, and steal sensitive data. Distribution relies on SEO poisoning to outrank official sources, plus Discord, MediaFire, GitHub, and Minecraft hosting sites; nearly half of malicious URLs were Discord links. One fake site was built with the AI website builder Lovable, and McAfee blocked more than 6,300 access attempts to malicious sites.

From Hacks to Bioweapons, Claude Misuse Is Now Everywhere

Anthropic's new report documents eight months of Claude misuse: Russian state-sponsored hackers (Microsoft-named Midnight Blizzard) used it for reconnaissance against Ukrainian and European government networks, stealing data and maintaining access, while ShinyHunters used it across hacking and extortion campaigns, and users attempted bioweapon development. Anthropic says it disrupted the activity. The WIRED roundup also covers the US seizure and sanctioning of Xinbi Guarantee, a Telegram black market with $30 billion-plus in sales mostly laundering pig-butchering scam proceeds, plus DOJ raids on 13 scam compounds in Madagascar and a four-year prison sentence for a Conti ransomware member. Researchers found that SuperBox devices and the CyberFlix TV app, distributed through SuperBox's custom app store, contain Popanet proxy functionality that registers the device with servers controlled by the proxy operator, enrolling household connections into residential proxy networks. The reported configuration weakens Android safeguards with exposed ADB access, root-level privileges without authentication, and removal of app-install protections. Plume's research warns these proxy networks can also function as malware-delivery platforms, and the FBI notes foreign entities use residential proxies to conceal activity such as credential stuffing and account abuse. Malwarebytes advises disconnecting and replacing affected SuperBox/CyberFlix devices rather than factory-resetting them.
