Microsoft Teams is about to make QR code phishing much harder

Microsoft Teams will obscure QR codes from external senders starting October 2026, adding friction against QR-code phishing across Android, desktop, iOS, and Mac.

Microsoft 365 Roadmap entry 570439 describes a Teams feature that obscures images containing QR codes sent by external users, requiring users to reveal them before viewing or scanning. Rollout is expected to begin in October 2026 for Android, desktop, iOS, and Mac. The feature aims to reduce QR code phishing risk, which NordVPN says has redirected more than 26 million users to malicious websites, with 73% of Americans scanning codes without verifying destinations.

How QR-code phishing can slip past corporate security measures

ESET explains how QR-code phishing (quishing) bypasses corporate security controls and offers guidance for defenders to close the gap.

ESET WeLiveSecurity published an analysis of quishing, describing QR-code phishing as an increasingly popular alternative to traditional phishing. Because QR codes push victims to scan and open links on personal devices, they often evade corporate email security gateways and URL inspection. The article outlines how businesses can close the resulting gap with appropriate security measures and user awareness.

The 12 Best Mobile Threat Defense (MTD) Solutions, Compared and Priced

A comparison of 12 mobile threat defense vendors highlights Zimperium's on-device detection and notes Kaspersky's US exit and Wandera's Jamf absorption.

The buyer's guide compares 12 mobile threat defense (MTD) products, naming Zimperium best for fully on-device detection and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint as the best-value bundled option. It reminds readers that Kaspersky cannot legally be sold or updated in the US following a Commerce Department determination, and that Wandera was acquired by Jamf. Most MTD pricing is quote-based per device or per user.

Top 10 Best Mobile Threat Defense (MTD) Solutions in 2026

Roundup of 2026 mobile threat defense tools recommends Zimperium and Lookout for targeted-attack detection and Defender for Endpoint for Microsoft shops.

This guide ranks ten mobile threat defense solutions, recommending Zimperium and Lookout for on-device detection against targeted users such as executives and journalists, and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint mobile for organizations already licensing Microsoft 365 E5. It explains that MDM enforces configuration while MTD detects attacks, and that mobile phishing now arrives via SMS, messaging apps and QR codes rather than email. It also highlights mercenary spyware and zero-click exploits as shifting requirements for high-risk users, referencing Apple's threat-notification program and Lockdown Mode.

Triage & Response Bottlenecks Eating into MSSP Margins: How to Remove the Friction

ANY.RUN says manual triage bottlenecks erode MSSP margins and promotes its Threat Intelligence Lookup and sandbox to cut Tier 1 workload by up to 20%.

Vendor blog post from ANY.RUN describes recurring MSSP triage and response bottlenecks: manual alert validation, unnecessary Tier 2 escalations, manual handoffs, outdated threat data, and disconnected tools. It cites a healthcare MSSP case study where the Tier 1 closure rate rose from 20% to 70% and false escalations dropped 34% after adopting its tools. The piece claims ANY.RUN can reduce Tier 1 workload by up to 20%, letting MSSPs absorb more clients without proportional headcount growth.

UK Government Begins Moving 23 Million Users Away From Passwords

UK government rolls out passkeys for GOV.UK One Login, giving 23 million users phishing-resistant passwordless access to public services.

The UK government has begun deploying passkeys across GOV.UK One Login for more than 23 million users, replacing passwords and SMS one-time codes with FIDO2 cryptographic credentials. A trial saw over 300,000 people adopt passkeys, and nearly one in ten daily authentications already use them, cutting SMS verification costs by almost £600 per day. Passkeys remain optional, with password-based sign-in retained as a fallback, and the NCSC endorses the approach as phishing-resistant.

TLD Tracker: Exploring Newly Released Top

Unit 42 tracked 19 newly released top-level domains and found large-scale phishing, unwanted program distribution, and cybersquatting tied to TLD launch dates.

Researchers analyzed 19 new generic TLDs, including .zip, .bot, .ing, and .meme, released or approaching general availability over roughly 18 months. Data from passive DNS, registry zone files, newly registered domain feeds, and the Tranco top-1M list showed phishing campaigns, potentially unwanted program distribution, and domain squatting on these TLDs. Abuse correlated with each TLD's rollout phases, indicating attackers monitor general availability dates to register and weaponize domains. The IANA root database now lists over 1,000 generic TLDs.
