India may bind messaging accounts to active SIMs in 2027
October 23: GBHackers says Snapchat and Signal coverage is disputed, and secondary phones, tablets or travel SIMs may lose access. The rules do not ban phone models.
From January 1, 2027, WhatsApp and other messengers in India may restrict accounts if the registered SIM is inactive.
India’s Department of Telecommunications ordered messaging services to keep accounts linked to the active SIM of the registered number, a rule called SIM binding. Compliance is due December 31, 2026; from January 1, 2027, users in India may lose access if that SIM or eSIM is removed, replaced, or deactivated. Cyber Security News says the directions were issued November 28, 2025 under the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, 2024, and cites 2024 cyber-fraud losses above ₹22,800 crore. Officials say criminals reuse Indian numbers for phishing and cross-border fraud after the SIM is gone. A reported blanket six-hour web logout has shifted to risk-based controls, and GBHackers says reports differ on whether Snapchat and Signal remain covered.
