The ugly economics of consumer AI
Few consumers pay for AI despite model gains, pushing major labs toward enterprise revenue.
TechCrunch argues consumer AI remains difficult to monetize even as assistants such as Meta's Muse, OpenAI's Dots, and Instinct proliferate. Citing Andreessen Horowitz and PNC, it says about 2.2% of consumers paid for AI as of May, averaging $31 a month, with little acceleration after large model gains such as GPT-5.2 to Astra. Bank of America separately found roughly 3% of U.S. consumers paying in March. OpenAI's reported enterprise pivot, including bookings doubling since July, is presented as the more viable path.
