One year later: Sovereign AI and the fight for choice

Cloudflare is bringing EuroLLM and Switzerland's fully open Apertus model to Workers AI.

Cloudflare said EuroLLM and Apertus are coming to Workers AI, with access available by request. EuroLLM, developed by a European university consortium with Horizon Europe and EuroHPC support, covers 35 languages including all 24 official EU languages and was trained on MareNostrum 5. Apertus, from ETH Zurich, EPFL and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, is fully open, trained on more than 15 trillion tokens and over 1,500 languages on the Alps supercomputer. Cloudflare also announced hands-on workshops to help government cyber agencies build model-agnostic AI defenses, starting in Singapore in October.

TERRA: Terrain-Aware Reconstruction, Retargeting and Control for Musculoskeletal Locomotion

Researchers present TERRA, a pipeline that retargets motion data for muscle-driven locomotion on non-flat terrain.

Researchers present TERRA, a pipeline that reconstructs task-relevant terrain from kinematic motion alone and retargets it onto musculoskeletal bodies. It uses terrain priors, estimated contacts, negative free-space evidence, and anatomical, tendon, and contact constraints. A single muscle-actuated policy trained on 9.4 hours from five datasets improved terrain accuracy, cut interaction violations, and posted the highest completion rate on held-out terrain families.

OpenAI keeps bulldozing mathematicians

OpenAI's new math advisory group is already mired in confusion over independence and a rush of claimed breakthroughs.

Mathematicians announced the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, a nine-member body meant to independently advise OpenAI and other labs on reviewing and communicating math results. OpenAI's louder announcement created confusion over whether AGMAI was company-appointed; member Martin Hairer said the group is unpaid, independent, and not restricted beyond confidentiality for early research access. The group formed after criticism of how OpenAI handled claims around the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem. OpenAI says an unreleased model has resolved more than 100 long-standing open problems and wants help coordinating their release.
