OpenAI wants to consult elite mathematicians about how to not fumble again
OpenAI backs independent nine-mathematician advisory panel (AGMAI) at IAS to guide how AI math results are reviewed and released.
Following criticism over its release of mathematical results, OpenAI announced the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence (AGMAI), a nine-member panel hosted by Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. Members come from Stanford, Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge, include multiple Fields Medalists, are unpaid by OpenAI, and can publicly comment and publish advice. The group will advise on reviewing and communicating emerging results, with early access to OpenAI research. Mathematicians welcomed it as a first step but questioned member selection, actual influence, and representativeness; member Martin Hairer defended its independence in a blog post.
