EU’s hodgepodge tech policy exposes members to Chinese vendor risks, says think tank
RUSI says uneven EU rules leave members exposed to Huawei and ZTE in critical infrastructure.
The Royal United Services Institute said uneven EU technology policy leaves member states differently exposed to Chinese vendors such as Huawei and ZTE. Only 10 of 27 members have fully implemented the voluntary EU Toolbox for 5G Security launched in 2020. Proposed Cybersecurity Act amendments would let the Commission list untrusted vendors that 18 critical sectors must remove within 36 months, and Huawei and ZTE have been indicated. RUSI cited about 59 percent Chinese equipment in Germany's 2024 5G RAN and 32 percent in Spain's, while the UK aims to remove Chinese telecom technology by the end of next year.
