CERN Renounces RHEL in Favor of Debian
CERN will move its 2,200-machine accelerator-control fleet from Red Hat-derived distributions to Debian 13, completing the transition by Q4 2026.
CERN engineers announced at MiniDebConf Winterthur that accelerator-control systems, spanning more than 2,200 front-end computers and 17,000 embedded devices, will migrate from Red Hat-derived distributions to Debian 13 ('Trixie'). The trigger was RHEL 9's x86-64-v2 and RHEL 10's x86-64-v3 compiler baselines, which would obsolete legacy Core 2-era and custom industrial boards built for 10-15 year lifecycles. Debian was chosen for retaining x86-64-v1 baseline support, a large package repository, and PREEMPT_RT real-time patch integration in mainline kernels. CERN's compute farms and Tier-0 grid infrastructure will remain on AlmaLinux and RHEL.
