Google Android Flags 5 Million Suspected Scam Calls and Texts Monthly

Google says Android now flags over five million suspected scam calls and texts monthly and is adding Gemini protections.

Google said Android scam detection now flags more than 5 million suspected scam calls and text messages each month. An opt-in Enhanced Protection mode in Google Messages combines on-device detection with Private AI Compute and Gemini to assess multi-message social engineering, and uses Gemini Nano plus web signals to evaluate unfamiliar links. Android will obscure login and payment pages in Chrome and WebView during screen sharing, block apps from silently enabling call forwarding, and warn on risky MMI codes. Verified financial calls with Banco do Brasil and Itaú Unibanco have blocked more than 3 million spoofed calls since June.

Android adds AI-powered scam alerts, hangs up on bank impostors

Google is adding Gemini-powered Android scam alerts, link checks, and automatic hang-ups on unverified bank calls.

Google is rolling out opt-in Enhanced Protection in Google Messages that uses Private AI Compute and cloud Gemini models to assess scam intent in conversations with unknown senders, plus on-device Gemini Nano checks of unfamiliar links. Screen-sharing protections that blank login and payment fields are expanding to Chrome and Android WebView on Android 15 and later. Android will warn before call-forwarding codes take effect and, with participating banks including Banco do Brasil, automatically end calls that claim to be the bank but fail verification.

Android is using AI to suss out scammers in Google Messages

Google is adding opt-in Gemini scam detection in Android Messages and expanding protections to more phone makers.

Google is rolling out an opt-in enhanced-protection mode in Google Messages that uses cloud-based Gemini models to assess scam intent in conversations with unrecognized senders, supplementing existing on-device detection. Google says the data is encrypted and processed in a dedicated space it cannot access. On-device Gemini Nano will also inspect unfamiliar URLs before they are opened. Android will block and alert on app-enabled call forwarding, while Chrome and Android WebView conceal sensitive information during screen sharing. Notification scam detection is expanding from Pixel phones to Honor, Motorola, Oppo, OnePlus, Realme, Tecno, Vivo, Xiaomi, and others, with hundreds of millions more users planned later this year.
