BlueMoon Exploit Kit Chains Recent Chrome, Windows Zero-Days

Proofpoint reports multiple espionage groups rapidly adopting BlueMoon, a new exploit kit chaining Chrome and Windows zero-days.

Proofpoint identified a new exploit kit, BlueMoon, chaining two Chrome V8 zero-days (CVE-2026-85046, CVE-2026-87491) with a Windows ALPC privilege escalation zero-day (CVE-2026-85880), all patched between September 3 and September 2026 Patch Tuesday. China-linked Violet Typhoon (APT31) first used it on August 28 against US NGOs and mining/commodity trading firms; UNK_LateNight, UNK_DoubleCheck, and UNK_QuietRacket adopted it within days against targets in the US, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore. The kit exploits the V8 defects for sandbox escape, fingerprints the host, and injects a CreateProcess stub into the Chrome broker process to download and execute a payload via curl. Development artifacts suggest the kit's creators may have used AI to build it, potentially lowering the barrier to exploit development.

China-Linked Hackers Chain Chrome Zero-Day With Windows Kernel Flaw in Attacks

Volexity reports China-linked UTA0560 and JungleBamboo chained Chrome zero-day CVE-2026-85046 with kernel flaws to spy on NGOs.

Volexity documented campaigns detected on September 1, 2026, in which China-linked actors UTA0560 and JungleBamboo (APT31) chained CVE-2026-85046 (V8 type confusion), CVE-2026-87491 (WebAssembly sandbox escape), and CVE-2026-85880 (Windows kernel privilege escalation in RtlpCreateServerAcl). Victims were lured via links on legitimate U.S. university sites vulnerable to reflected XSS, then served hidden exploit iframes behind a donation-form image. Although a V8 fix had landed in Chromium's source after private August reporting, Chrome had not yet shipped it, creating a patch gap the actors exploited. The two groups installed distinct payloads: UTA0560 delivered the GRIMWEDGE JScript backdoor via DLL side-loading, while JungleBamboo used the SUPERSTOMP loader to install the LONGTALE credential-stealing Chrome extension disguised as Google Gemini.

Google no longer provides direct URLs in search results

Google Search now rewrites organic result links to opaque google.com/goto redirects, raising costs for SERP scrapers including AI crawlers.

As of late August 2026, logged-out and private-mode Google SERPs consistently replace organic result hrefs with /goto?url= links using a Google-specific encoding that cannot be decoded offline; the destination URL is only revealed in the Location header of the /goto response. This differs from the older google.com/url?q= format where the target was readable in the query string. The change fits Google's broader anti-scraping push against AI crawlers and SEO scrapers, alongside removing &num=100 and tightening BotGuard/SearchGuard. SERP API vendor Autom.dev updated its pipeline to resolve goto links via HEAD requests without following redirects.

Google stole open source code without crediting the authors (Artemis/Minitap)

Minitap alleges Google's Artemis mobile-agent project reused its open-source mobile-use code and stripped author attribution, despite Apache 2.0 requirements.

Minitap says Google's Artemis project for automating mobile devices contains code identical to its open-source mobile-use agent, including the Hopper agent's verbatim instructions and a WhatsApp messaging example, and that a package file listing authors Pierre-Louis Favreau, Jean-Pierre Lo, and Nicolas Dehandschoewercker was replaced via an August force push removing their names. The company argues this conflicts with Apache 2.0's requirement to preserve copyright and attribution notices. Minitap also claims the AndroidWorld leaderboard ignored its later 94.8% and 100% submissions while showing Artemis at 99.1% and mobile-use at 91.4%. It has published a public factual record with archived file comparisons.

Florida says motor vehicle data breach tied to credentials stolen from officer’s personal device

ShinyHunters breached Florida's DMV using credentials stolen from a police officer's personal device; the state confirmed the breach and is investigating.

Florida's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) confirmed a data breach after ShinyHunters obtained DMV data using credentials a criminal actor took from a Plant City police officer's personal electronic device. The department learned of the breach on September 4, is investigating with the Florida Digital Service, and ShinyHunters shared a DMV record of Jeffrey Epstein as proof of access. Experts initially speculated a link to the IDScan breach of 153 million driver's licenses. Anthropic reported that suspected ShinyHunters affiliates use AI to scan credentials, map systems, and exfiltrate data, in one case moving from a stolen developer token to cloud admin access in about three hours.

Ex-Deepmind VP Vinyals says AI self-improvement is coming but won't trigger an intelligence explosion

Ex-DeepMind research VP Oriol Vinyals says recursive self-improvement is coming but slow, and co-founds Discovery Loop with Jeff Dean to automate research.

Oriol Vinyals, former VP of Research at Google DeepMind who worked on AlphaStar, AlphaCode, and Gemini, argued at Agentic AI Summit 2026 that recursive self-improvement will progress gradually without an intelligence explosion. He identifies idea generation ('research taste') and evaluation as the two biggest bottlenecks, noting benchmarks like SWE-Bench Pro and ML-Bench mostly test the already-working steps and suffer from overfitting and scheming. He is co-founding Discovery Loop with Jeff Dean as CEO, Sanjay Ghemawat, and Quoc Le to automate the full research cycle, starting with AI research.

Re-Engineering YouTube for the Living Room: Bringing "Chrobalt" to RDK

Collabora and Google built the first RDK-based Chrobalt reference platform, re-architecting YouTube's Cobalt web engine on Chromium for smart TVs.

Collabora spent over a year with Google's YouTube Cobalt and Partner Engineering teams porting Chrobalt — Cobalt re-architected on top of Chromium, starting with 26.eap and now 27.lts tracking Chromium 138+ — to an RDK platform on Amlogic chipsets. The work included modernizing Starboard and Yocto toolchains, integrating Chromium unit tests and the Starboard NPLB conformance suite, and validating the platform against YouTube Test Suite (YTS) requirements for 4K/UHD playback, DRM, and low-latency input. Collabora also co-authored a Rust reference implementation of the Device Automation Bus (DAB) adapter and upstreamed fixes to the Cobalt/Starboard codebase. The platform was presented as a validated, production-ready path at the YouTube Device Partner Summit and BlinkOn-21.

Researchers Uncover 10,000+ Malware Loaders Behind YouTube and SEO Poisoning Campaign

Unit 42 uncovers CL-CRI-1171, a two-year pay-per-install campaign distributing 10,000+ OfferLoader samples via YouTube and SEO poisoning.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 tracked a campaign as CL-CRI-1171, an infection-as-a-service platform operating for at least two years. It used 11 YouTube gaming channels with hundreds of thousands of subscribers and SEO-poisoned download pages for trojanized WinDirStat and Bluetooth driver installers to distribute OfferLoader, a disposable loader embedded in Inno Setup installers. Payloads delivered included Insomnia RAT (Node.js and Python backdoors), ARKTunnel (a WebSocket-based RAT using LSB steganography), and Docro Hijacker (Chrome browser hijacker), with later infections delivering GCleaner and Socks5Systemz. Over 200 rotating domains across .xyz, .cfd, .space, and .info TLDs were used, with gating filters that served broken links or decoy pages to scanners and researchers.

Google’s Early Access is creating a blind spot for malicious apps

Bitdefender found thousands of Google Play Early Access apps with deceptive behavior, including ad-fraud-capable utilities requesting excessive permissions on Android devices.

Bitdefender Labs analyzed Google Play apps installed by its users and identified thousands of Early Access applications that appeared deceptive, including fake casino and reward games, misleading utilities, and apps using third-party trademarks, many promoted via social ads with AI deepfakes. Early Access apps cannot receive public reviews, removing a key warning signal users normally rely on. Some apps requested unusual permissions, such as a QR scanner seeking to replace the device launcher, which could enable hidden web views that click ads and potentially display fake login screens or capture two-factor codes. Bitdefender recommends Android Enterprise Work Profiles and notes Google Workspace admins can disable Early Access apps for their organization.

SpecGuard: Inference-Time Backdoor Detection For Free

SpecGuard detects backdoored LLM behavior at inference time using speculative decoding acceptance rates, adding no extra model computation.

Researchers propose SpecGuard, an inference-time backdoor detector that repurposes draft-token acceptance rates from speculative decoding as a detection signal at zero added model-computation cost. When a trigger shifts the target model toward attacker-controlled behavior, the clean draft model's acceptance rate changes, exposing the backdoor; the paper formalizes when this signal appears and shows suppressing it weakens the backdoor. Experiments across diverse backdoor types and model families show reliable detection, including stealthy cases invisible to input-level filters. Speculative decoding is positioned as a free, always-on monitor for frequently updated deployed models.

Signing the Transaction but Not the Decision: Whisper Attacks and a Binding Defense for AP2

Research shows AP2 agent-payment signatures can be manipulated into valid but wrong carts; proposed A-VIP defense binds signed intent to purchases.

A study demonstrates Whisper attacks on the AP2 agent payment protocol, where ordinary product-description text steers shopping agents into carts that pass every cryptographic check but no longer match user intent. Using Gemini Flash-Lite models specified by AP2's default sample agents, three attacks succeeded at 90%, 56%, and 73.3%, with the vulnerability spanning seventeen Google models, three agent frameworks, cross-vendor anchors, and Google's consumer assistant. The proposed A-VIP defense treats signed intent as a capability grant, binding credential lookups to sessions and cart lines to seen listings, blocking the first two attacks with zero false positives while surfacing unauthorized spending. The authors release A-VIP code, machine-checked invariants, and AP2-WhisperBench with 1,544 evaluation scenarios.

Google Open-Sources Mantis: A Modular Skills Toolkit That Lets Coding Agents Find, Reproduce and Patch Vulnerabilities

Google open-sourced Mantis, an Apache-2.0 modular skills toolkit that lets AI coding agents find, reproduce, and patch vulnerabilities with sandboxed verification.

Google released Mantis on GitHub under Apache 2.0 as a stack-agnostic set of slash-command skills that chain through the full vulnerability lifecycle: mining version history, building threat models, filtering findings, reproducing bugs in gVisor or network-disabled VMs, assembling exploit chains, patching, and scoring residual risk from 1 to 10. It runs with Gemini CLI, Antigravity CLI, the Google ADK, or comparable agent frameworks, and a supervisor skill (/mantis-meta-agent) can drive the whole loop. Google says the design targets the sub-7 percent true-positive rate of naive AI code scanning, and that its hierarchical summary tree cuts token overhead by over 85 percent. The toolkit is deployable for local and internal evaluation but not yet recommended for production.

Novel Blue Moon kit targeting Chrome and Windows reflects new reality of AI-driven exploits

Proofpoint reports the BlueMoon exploit kit, chaining two Chrome V8 zero-days and a Windows ALPC bug, being shared across China-linked espionage groups.

Proofpoint identified a new exploit kit, BlueMoon, first observed on August 28 and used by TA412 (APT31/Violet Typhoon) against US NGOs, mining firms, and commodity trading companies. The kit chains a V8 type confusion RCE (CVE-2026-85046), a V8 sandbox escape, and a Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call privilege escalation (CVE-2026-85880), both patched flaws having been exploited in the wild. At least four espionage groups, most with suspected China nexus including UNK_LateNight, adopted the kit within days, targeting US aerospace firms with defense-sector lures. Fewer than 20 organizations were observed targeted, and researchers believe AI-assisted exploit development against upstream Chromium patches enabled the kit's rapid creation and sharing.

Chinese espionage groups swarm to exploit triple-link chain of zero-days

At least four China-aligned espionage groups chained three zero-days in Chromium browsers and Windows ALPC for espionage since late August.

Proofpoint observed at least four state-aligned threat groups, starting with TA412/Violet Typhoon/APT31 on August 28, chaining three zero-days in the 'BlueMoon' exploit chain targeting Chrome, Chromium-based browsers and Microsoft Windows. The chain includes RCE flaws in Chromium's JavaScript engine (CVE-2026-85046, CVE-2026-87491) and a Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call privilege-escalation zero-day (CVE-2026-85880), enabling sandbox code execution, sandbox escape and system privileges. APT31 delivered the chain via phishing links to NGOs, mining and commodity trading firms in the US, installing a browser extension disguised as Google Gemini to surveil activity and steal credentials. Other groups (UNK_LateNight, UNK_DoubleCheck, UNK_QuietRacket) targeted US aerospace, Vietnamese manufacturing, and Indonesian and Singaporean organizations; fewer than 20 victims were directly observed but the true count is likely higher.

4 groups caught using the same Chrome and Windows exploit kit

Proofpoint says at least four groups, some China-linked, actively share the BlueMoon kit chaining two Chromium and one Windows kernel exploit.

Proofpoint researchers report that at least four hacking groups, some with ties to the Chinese government, are actively using a nearly identical exploit kit named BlueMoon. The kit chains two Chromium browser vulnerabilities and one Windows kernel flaw affecting Windows 10, Windows 11 initial release, and a later Windows version to install malware of the attacker's choice. All three vulnerabilities received patches within the past 24 hours. Proofpoint attributes the kit's rapid, widely shared deployment to a Chromium patch-gap window and AI agents accelerating exploit development against publicly accessible upstream patches.

  • Actively Exploited V8 Type Confusion in Google Chrome (CVE-2026-85046)
Google Chrome versions prior to 152.0.7977.82 contain a type confusion flaw (CWE-843) in the V8 JavaScript engine, which mishandles object types during engine operations (public proof-of-concept writeups indicate it is reachable through array sorting and WebAssembly-related code paths). A remote attacker triggers the flaw simply by getting a user to open a crafted HTML page, with no privileges or authentication required. Successful exploitation lets the attacker execute arbitrary code inside the browser's sandbox, and public reporting shows it being chained with Windows zero-days (the 'BlueMoon' exploit kit) by Chinese espionage groups for broader compromise. Any user of an unpatched Chrome or another build embedding the affected V8 engine is exposed. The vulnerability is a zero-day that was actively exploited in the wild before patching, was added to CISA's KEV on 2026-09-04, and has five public proof-of-concept references.

  • Actively Exploited Out-of-Bounds Write in Google Chrome V8
CVE-2026-87491 is an out-of-bounds write (CWE-787) in the V8 JavaScript engine in Google Chrome, fixed in Chrome 153.0.8010.36, which Google shipped alongside roughly 230 other security fixes. An attacker can trigger the flaw remotely by luring a user (user interaction required) into opening a crafted HTML page that corrupts memory in V8. Successful exploitation allows the attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the Chrome browser sandbox, which constrains but does not eliminate the impact. All Google Chrome users running versions prior to 153.0.8010.36 are affected; because the flaw resides in V8, CISA tracks it as 'Google Chromium V8', and other Chromium-based browsers may inherit the fix in their own updates. The flaw is being actively exploited in the wild — it is the seventh actively exploited Chrome zero-day of 2026 and was added to CISA's KEV catalog on 2026-09-09 — though no public proof-of-concept is known and ransomware use is unknown.

  • Heap-Based Buffer Overflow in Windows ALPC Enables Local Privilege Escalation
CVE-2026-85880 is a heap-based buffer overflow in Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call (ALPC), the Windows mechanism for local inter-process communication. An authorized local attacker can trigger the overflow by submitting crafted input over ALPC, corrupting heap memory in the component that handles the request. Successful exploitation allows the attacker to execute code with elevated privileges, typically gaining SYSTEM-level control of the local host, which is especially valuable as a post-exploitation or sandbox-escape step. Affected products include Windows 10 (1607, 1809, 21H2, 22H2) and Windows Server 2012, 2016, 2019, and 2022, meaning most on-premises Windows estates are in scope. The flaw was fixed in Microsoft's record 974-CVE September 2026 Patch Tuesday and was added to CISA's KEV on 2026-09-08, confirming exploitation in the wild; press reports describe Windows zero-days being chained with a Chrome zero-day in 'BlueMoon' kit attacks, though the data does not explicitly confirm this CVE is the Windows flaw in that chain.

  • Out-of-Bounds Read/Write in Google Chrome V8 Enables In-Sandbox Code Execution
CVE-2026-11645 is an out-of-bounds read and write (CWE-125/CWE-787) in V8, the JavaScript engine used by Google Chrome and Chromium. A remote attacker triggers the flaw by luring a user to a crafted HTML page, where malicious script causes V8 to read and write outside allocated memory buffers. Successful exploitation allows the attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the browser's security sandbox, providing limited privileges within that process rather than full system compromise. All Google Chrome versions prior to 149.0.7827.103 are affected, along with the Chromium V8 component identified by CISA. The flaw is being exploited in the wild: CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2026-06-09, and related headlines describe an actively exploited Chrome V8 zero-day, though no public proof-of-concept is known and ransomware use is unconfirmed.

  • Out-of-Bounds Memory Flaw in Google Chrome V8 Allows Sandboxed Code Execution
CVE-2026-3910 is an out-of-bounds memory flaw — CISA classifies it as improper restriction of operations within the bounds of a memory buffer — caused by an inappropriate implementation in the V8 JavaScript and WebAssembly engine used in Google Chrome. A remote attacker triggers it by luring a user to a crafted HTML page, so exploitation requires user interaction but no privileges or special conditions. Successful exploitation allows the attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the Chrome sandbox, which confines the compromise to the renderer process rather than the full system, but still exposes data and credentials handled within the browser session. Anyone running Google Chrome prior to 146.0.7680.75 — or a Chromium-based browser that embeds the vulnerable V8 code — is affected. The flaw is being actively exploited in the wild: CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2026-03-13, and it comes amid a string of actively exploited Chrome V8 zero-days that Google has fixed during 2026.

  • Use-After-Free in Google Chrome's Dawn (WebGPU) Component Enables Arbitrary Code Execution
CVE-2026-5281 is a use-after-free vulnerability in Dawn, the WebGPU implementation in Google Chrome, that Google patched in Chrome 146.0.7680.178. It is triggered when a remote attacker serves a crafted HTML page and can leverage it after having already compromised the Chrome renderer process, escalating to arbitrary code execution beyond the initial foothold. Because the flaw requires a compromised renderer as a starting point, it is typically chained with another bug (such as a renderer-exploiting issue) to break out to arbitrary code execution with real impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Any user or organization running Google Chrome on a version prior to 146.0.7680.178 is affected. The flaw is confirmed as exploited in the wild: CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2026-04-01, and its EPSS score of 4.9% (92nd percentile) indicates a meaningful near-term exploitation probability.

  • Local Privilege Escalation via Link Following in Windows Update Stack
CVE-2026-81963 is a link-following flaw (CWE-59, improper link resolution before file access) in the Microsoft Windows Update Stack, in which the component fails to correctly resolve file links before opening them. A local attacker with low privileges can plant or manipulate a link (symlink/junction) that the privileged update stack follows during operation, redirecting its file access to an attacker-controlled target. The result is local privilege escalation — CVSS 3.1 rates this 7.8 (high) with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact — allowing an authorized local user or malware already on the machine to gain elevated rights. Affected products are Windows 11 23H2, 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1 and Windows Server 2025; any unpatched system on those versions is exposed to any local account holder. The flaw was fixed in Microsoft's record September 2026 Patch Tuesday (974 CVEs), was added to CISA's KEV on 2026-09-08 as one of two Windows zero-days reported as exploited in the wild, and has no known public PoC or confirmed ransomware use.

CVE-2026-87464 is a use-after-free (CWE-416) in the WebGL component of Google Chrome affecting versions prior to 153.0.8010.36. A remote attacker can trigger it by luring a user to open a crafted HTML page, which corrupts memory in the browser's WebGL rendering path. Successful exploitation allows arbitrary code execution outside the browser sandbox, meaning the attacker escapes Chrome's process isolation and runs code with the privileges of the browser on the host. All Chrome users running an unpatched version before 153.0.8010.36 are affected. As of now there is no public proof-of-concept and this specific flaw is not in CISA KEV, although the Chrome 153 release headlines reference a separate V8 zero-day that was exploited in the wild.
