Windows 11 Update Causes Black Screen and Desktop Loading Issues After Sign-In
Microsoft says Windows 11 preview updates can black-screen Azure Virtual Desktop sessions that use FSLogix.
Microsoft confirmed that Windows 11 devices which installed August 2026 non-security preview updates, and possibly later cumulative updates, can show a black screen after sign-in or fail to load the desktop. Version 26H1 is linked to KB5120996, OS Build 28000.2804, while 24H2 and 25H2 are linked to KB5120998. Azure Virtual Desktop session hosts using FSLogix are most frequently affected, and Application logs may show Explorer.exe crashes. Microsoft is mitigating the issue with Known Issue Rollback policies KB5124006 and KB5124010 and has not yet released a permanent fix.
