AI Coding Tools Now a Prime Target for Threat Actors, Google Warns

Google Threat Intelligence Group warns threat actors increasingly target AI coding tools and proprietary AI data, with UNC6780's Dustmaker enabling large-scale supply chain compromises.

Google Threat Intelligence Group's September 8 report says AI-assisted coding tools have become prime targets, contributing to large-scale software supply chain compromises in 2025 and early 2026. Financially motivated group UNC6780 used its Dustmaker credential stealer to extract tokens from GitHub Actions runner memory and compromise packages across PyPI, npm, and Docker Hub, then sold harvested AI tool credentials to other criminals. Chinese nation-state actor UNC6508 conducted espionage against proprietary AI research at North American academic, medical, and military institutions, while extortion gangs stole models, prompts, and source code in Q2 2026. GTIG also documented agentic attacker experimentation, including an autonomous multi-agent credential harvesting campaign built in under six hours and a 'Recon' C2 framework managing over 23,800 harvested secrets.

Extortion crews have their eyes on high-value AI data, Google warns

Google's Mandiant warns extortion crews now steal proprietary AI models, prompts, and research for ransom, while threat actors automate attacks with agentic AI.

Google's AI Threat Tracker details intrusions in which extortion crews exfiltrated healthcare drug research and a proprietary AI model, and stole an AI media company's source code, prompts, skills, model scripts, and secrets, threatening leaks unless paid. TeamPCP (UNC6780), behind large open-source supply chain attacks on PyPI, npm, and Docker Hub since March, used a malicious GitHub Actions workflow to exfiltrate a company's proprietary AI repository. Mandiant also observed a fully autonomous multi-agent credential-harvesting cloud intrusion completed in under six hours, and a China-linked espionage group using Gemini to build a dynamic automated penetration-testing framework.

Shai-Hulud's Reach Just Grew to 469 Credential Locations. Here's What That Means

GitGuardian found the Shai-Hulud infostealer worm now scans 469 credential locations, including CI/CD and AI tool configs, expanding supply-chain risk.

GitGuardian researchers found that a recent Shai-Hulud worm variant scans for credentials across 469 locations in developer environments, CI/CD tooling, cloud configurations, and AI tool configs, up from 189 paths in earlier variants. The worm reuses stolen credentials to pivot from developer workstations to source code, cloud infrastructure, and package publishing channels, turning credential theft into forward-propagating supply chain attacks. The analysis urges defenders to prioritize removing long-lived package publishing tokens in favor of short-lived OIDC-based trusted publishing, citing recent Docker and GitHub Actions improvements.

50,000 Stripe Secrets Leaked in Public Code

Over 50,000 Stripe merchant API keys leaked via public code and logs; 659 merchant accounts' data offered on trading forum.

Ransomnews researchers identified over 50,000 unique Stripe merchant API keys exposed in public GitHub repositories, GitHub Actions logs, and misconfigured web servers. A dataset on a data-trading forum dated August 18, 2026 contained live keys for 659 merchant accounts plus roughly 35 GB of customer and payment data. Researchers demonstrated a leaked key enabled accessing customer lists, creating fraudulent payment links, and making test charges within 17 hours. Stripe itself was not compromised; over 3,000 misconfigured web servers revealed Stripe-related strings, with about 12% containing working keys.

Wiz AI Agent Finds Critical Snowflake GitHub Repo Flaw Advanced Security Missed

Wiz's AI agent uncovered a critical flaw in Snowflake's GitHub Actions workflow that GitHub Advanced Security scans had missed.

A Wiz researcher, using the company's AI security agent, discovered a critical security flaw in Snowflake's GitHub Actions workflow. The flaw had been missed by a GitHub Advanced Security scan, highlighting gaps in automated coverage for CI/CD pipelines. No CVE identifier or evidence of active exploitation was provided in the report.

Wiz Red Agent Finds Its Way Into Snowflake’s Internal Jira Through a Flaw in a GitHub Copilot–Assisted PR

Wiz's autonomous Red Agent found and exploited a GitHub Actions injection in a Copilot-assisted PR, reaching Snowflake's internal Jira without human help.

Wiz's Red Agent autonomously discovered a GitHub Actions injection flaw in a GitHub Copilot-assisted pull request, five days after the flaw went live. It exploited the flaw to validate access to sensitive data in Snowflake's internal Jira, bypassing detection by GitHub Advanced Security, and assessed the blast radius without human intervention. The exercise demonstrates agentic AI performing end-to-end offensive security operations against production systems.
