Passkey-themed phishing attacks lead to Microsoft 365 data theft

Microsoft links ShinyHunters- and Helix-affiliated actors to passkey-themed vishing and device-code phishing that compromises Microsoft 365 accounts and steals cloud data.

Microsoft attributes passkey- and SSO-themed social engineering activity, observed since May 2026, to Storm-3121 (linked to ShinyHunters and Falcon) and Storm-3032 (tied to BlackFile members now operating as Helix). Attackers impersonate corporate IT help desks by phone or SMS, urging fake passkey, MFA, or SSO updates and directing victims to adversary-in-the-middle phishing pages or device-code authentication flows that yield credentials, session tokens, and OAuth tokens. Post-compromise behavior includes Microsoft Graph enumeration of users, SharePoint, and OAuth grants, plus persistence via attacker-controlled MFA methods. Google Threat Intelligence tracks related activity as UNC6671, linked to the BlackFile, Helix, Falcon, Pink, and Redact extortion gangs.

Hackers Favor US Eastern Business Hours in M365 Phishing Campaign

KnowBe4 tracked 29,785 phishing emails abusing Microsoft 365 Direct Send to spoof internal senders while timing sends to US Eastern business hours.

KnowBe4 Threat Lab observed 29,785 confirmed phishing emails between July and August 2026 abusing Microsoft 365's Direct Send feature, which lets devices and legacy apps send mail without a dedicated account. The emails appeared to come from trusted internal addresses such as HR or accounting, bypassing email gateways by connecting directly to Exchange Online MX endpoints, with activity peaking on Monday-Tuesday during US Eastern business hours and near-zero weekend volume. About 35% of the messages carried malicious attachments like fake invoices, voicemail alerts, and OneDrive shares, and 4,023 used reply-to addresses on different domains to capture employee responses. Researchers recommended strict DMARC enforcement, connector restrictions, DKIM signing, and checking for the 'X-MS-Exchange-Organization-AuthAs: Anonymous' Exchange header.

Hackers Use Blob URLs and Microsoft Teams to Create Phishing Pages Inside Victims’ Browsers

Barracuda details a phishing campaign using Microsoft Teams OAuth redirects and browser blob URLs to render local fake DocuSign login pages for credential theft.

Barracuda researchers identified an active phishing campaign that routes DocuSign-themed emails with calendar invites through a Microsoft OAuth endpoint and crafted redirects into Microsoft Teams, then renders a fake sign-in page via a browser-generated blob URL. Because the page is assembled locally in memory and can register service workers and run in a sandboxed iframe, URL-reputation checks largely see legitimate Microsoft domains. The goal is credential theft and account takeover, not a flaw in Teams itself.

The Top 4 Threats We Found by Investigating Every Alert for a Quarter

Prophet Security's quarterly threat report finds identity attacks made up roughly half of confirmed malicious activity, with stolen authenticated sessions bypassing conditional access controls.

Between May 1 and July 31, 2026, Prophet Security investigated every alert in customer environments immediately on arrival; about 7% of completed investigations were confirmed malicious. Direct account/session attacks made up roughly 18% of confirmed activity, with replayed authenticated sessions bypassing conditional access since no re-authentication occurs. Infostealer activity affected about a quarter of investigated organizations, mostly delivered via browsers through compromised websites, malicious ads, sponsored search results and ClickFix fake CAPTCHA gates, with payloads including Lumma Stealer, Vidar, HijackLoader and AsyncRAT. Credential phishing was the largest category at about 28%, with adversary-in-the-middle relays revealed by seconds-long MFA approvals from distant countries and MFA fatigue attacks exploiting automatic unlock policies.

Hackers Pose as IT Support to Hijack Microsoft 365 Accounts With Fake Passkey Alerts

Microsoft warns of vishing campaigns by Storm-3121 and Storm-3032 hijacking Microsoft 365 accounts via fake passkey alerts, adding attacker-controlled MFA and exfiltrating cloud data.

Microsoft Security Research has tracked the campaign since May 2026: callers posing as IT helpdesk staff tell employees to urgently update passkeys, MFA, or SSO settings via domains such as add-passkey[.]com and contoso[.]add-passkey[.]com. The lures lead to adversary-in-the-middle phishing or device-code authentication flows that yield credentials, session tokens, or OAuth tokens, after which attackers enroll their own MFA methods for persistence and run Microsoft Graph reconnaissance. They then collect SharePoint, OneDrive, and sometimes Exchange Online data at deliberately low rates (often under 1,000 files or messages per hour), with python-httpx seen in high-volume file access. Microsoft attributes initial access tradecraft to Storm-3121 and Storm-3032, linked respectively to ShinyHunters/Falcon and BlackFile/Helix extortion operations.

Microsoft attributes the activity to Storm-2945, a sub-cluster of Russia-linked Midnight Blizzard (APT29, Cozy Bear, NOBELIUM, BlueBravo). The actor manipulates DNS and HTTP traffic on captive portal networks at hotels and conference centers, redirecting victims to attacker-controlled infrastructure for Microsoft 365 credential harvesting, device code phishing, and malware delivery. Evidence indicates shared captive portal services were compromised rather than each venue being breached individually.

  • Unauthenticated Deserialization RCE in Microsoft Entra ID
CVE-2026-69836 is a deserialization-of-untrusted-data flaw (CWE-502) in Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft's cloud identity and access management service. An unauthenticated attacker can trigger it by sending crafted serialized data over the network, and the CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) confirms that no privileges or user interaction are required. Successful exploitation yields remote code execution with high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability, and the changed-scope rating indicates impact can extend beyond the initially affected component. Any organization whose sign-in or identity infrastructure relies on Microsoft Entra ID is potentially in scope, although the source data publishes no specific affected version ranges. There is no known public proof-of-concept, the flaw is not in CISA's KEV, EPSS assigns a 1.6% probability of exploitation within 30 days, and related headlines indicate Microsoft has already patched the issue.
