The work by Valve's Timur Kristóf on improving old AMD GPUs on Linux
A Valve engineer improved Linux AMDGPU support so decade-old AMD GCN graphics cards run better.
Timur Kristóf of Valve’s Linux graphics team presented at XDC 2026 on moving decade-old AMD GCN 1.0/1.1 GPUs from the legacy Radeon driver to the AMDGPU kernel driver. The work enables the RADV Vulkan driver, better performance, and fixes for display and power-management issues, plus soft-reset support. Phoronix previously reported roughly a 30 percent performance boost for these cards in Linux 6.19.
