Cops Used AI Generated Photos of a Child to Lure Out a Suspected Predator
Livonia police used an AI-generated teen persona to arrest a man who tried to meet a fictitious 15-year-old.
Livonia police, working with an FBI task force officer, used an AI-generated image of a teenage-appearing male on the Taimi app to pose as a 15-year-old. Christopher Thomas Mertens, a Chicago-area high school maintenance worker, allegedly continued the conversation after being told the persona’s age and was arrested after driving to a meeting. Investigators identified him using Thomson Reuters CLEAR, Clearview AI facial search, and Flock vehicle-location data. The report also cites earlier AI-assisted stings and NCMEC’s reported surge in generative-AI child sexual abuse material.
