Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker's death
An arbitrator ordered Uber and a driver to pay $40 million over a 2023 California passenger death.
Retired judge Richard A. Stone ordered Uber and driver Vu Tran to pay $20 million each to the parents of Emily Normandin-Parker, who was killed on a California freeway in August 2023 after being left at a gore point. Uber said the arbitrator was wrong to hold it legally responsible and argued Tran was an independent contractor. A related Orange County civil case brought by passenger Luna Moore remains scheduled for further hearings.
