OpenAI expands Codex and its API at DevDay with security scans, a Decisions API, and Ultrafast

Codex now gets reusable cloud environments and can scan repositories for security holes. The Agents API picks up Computer Use, and OpenAI is adding a Decisions API and Ultrafast, a pricey new speed tier.

OpenAI announced the updates at its DevDay 2026 developer conference in San Francisco. Developers also get a revamped Codex CLI, a code review view in the ChatGPT desktop app, and a new technical foundation for the agent platform OpenAI runs with Amazon.

Reusable environments let teams get Codex tasks running faster

According to OpenAI, Codex now works on your own computer, from your phone, or in the cloud from any device. OpenAI already added control through the ChatGPT app on smartphones in May. What's new are reusable development environments that are supposed to get tasks started faster. Teams can use them to share one configuration with approved settings and permissions. Codex in the cloud is available on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare plans.

OpenAI has also reworked the Codex CLI. Users can now start and steer tasks by voice. A new "/agents" view is meant to make delegating easier and shows several tasks at once. OpenAI also improved prompt editing, session resuming, and work with Git worktrees, and cleaned up the terminal interface. The new CLI is available on all plans.

Codex reviews code on the desktop and hunts for vulnerabilities in the cloud

The ChatGPT desktop app gets its own code review view for changes across multiple projects. Developers can read summaries, go through diffs, and ask Codex about possible problems before leaving feedback on GitHub pull requests or GitLab merge requests. With automatic reviews, Codex does a first pass in the cloud while the developer is away from their computer. The feature is available on all plans.

Codex Security Cloud is aimed at security teams. It scans entire GitHub repositories on demand or on a schedule and keeps checking new commits as they come in. Codex investigates what it finds, filters out duplicates, and prepares fixes in the cloud, even when the laptop is closed. In July, OpenAI released the Codex Security CLI as an open-source tool that checks repositories from the command line and in CI/CD pipelines.

Users of the cloud version also get access to the Daybreak Blue models without having to apply for Daybreak separately. Daybreak Blue is the defensive tier of OpenAI's cybersecurity program, built for tasks like malware analysis. Until now, it required identity verification, among other things. Codex Security Cloud is available for Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu on desktop and web.

Agents built on the API can now operate software themselves

The Agents API has been in public beta since September 11 and runs on the same infrastructure as Codex and ChatGPT. The new addition is Computer Use, which lets agents operate software on their own to get tasks done. OpenAI has offered the feature in Codex and ChatGPT on macOS since April and on Windows 11 since May.

OpenAI says the API now also includes Codex's multi-agent features, Tool Search, and Context Compaction, which automatically condenses long contexts.

AWS and OpenAI announced Bedrock Managed Agents as a limited preview in April. The platform now takes on the core features of the Agents API, can be customized for AWS, and connects directly to AWS resources. That means developers can build OpenAI agents that run entirely on AWS.

OpenAI joins the push for fast decision models

With the Decisions API, OpenAI is moving into the field of so-called System One models. In mid-September, Diogo Almeida's startup TypeSafe AI introduced one such model called Jev, and the former OpenAI researcher's release set off a wave of hype among developers. Pairing a stronger model as an orchestrator with a fast decision model looks promising. One Minecraft agent, for example, has GPT-6 Astra plan goals and waypoints while Jev picks individual actions like mining, crafting, or fighting.

For the Decisions API, OpenAI uses a version of GPT-6 Luna, its low-cost model. Developers define questions with a limited set of predefined answers, pass in context as text or images, and get an answer back. They can use it to classify content, route requests, or decide an agent's next step. The API launches as a limited preview, with broad availability expected in the coming days.

Ultrafast speed comes at six times the price

According to OpenAI, the new Ultrafast premium tier speeds up token generation in Codex by up to eight times, to 300 tokens per second. In the API, it's up to six times faster. API pricing for Ultrafast is six times the standard rate. For GPT-6 Astra, that works out to $60 per million input tokens and $300 per million output tokens.

OpenAI offers Astra's Fast mode at double the price for 2.5 times the speed. GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark was much faster, hitting more than 1,000 tokens per second on Cerebras hardware, but it was a smaller model with weaker benchmark scores.

GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast is available now in the API. It's also in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Enterprise customers and subscribers to the new Pro 500 plan. That plan costs $500 and is supposed to offer the highest usage allowance of any subscription, though OpenAI doesn't say exactly how high it is. The existing $200 Pro plan will now include only ten times Plus usage in ChatGPT Work and Codex instead of twenty times. GPT-6 Pro messages in chat also get cut in half, from 200 to 100 per week. Existing customers keep their current limits for a transition period and get a one-time credit.

The new GPT-6.1 Sol costs the same in the API as its predecessor, $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. An Ultrafast version is expected in the coming days.
