How to Choose
Activate native controls first (GHAS/GitLab tiers reset the case), harden the execution layer (StepSecurity-class egress/pinning the actual attack surface), then buy posture (Cycode/Legit) where estate sprawl demands discovery.
Watch behavior (Arnica) where insider/dev-account risk matters; operationalize SLSA (Kusari) as contracts demand evidence.
Common mistakes: dedicated spend before native activation; secrets scanned while runners egress freely; evaluating static application security testing (SAST) without considering runner context; attestations treated as slideware.
FAQ: Best CI/CD Security Tools
What is the best CI/CD pipeline security tool in 2026?
Native baselines first (GitHub Advanced Security, GitLab Ultimate), Cycode and Legit for dedicated posture, StepSecurity for runner/action hardening, Arnica for behavioral detection, Kusari for SLSA plumbing with Argon (Aqua) and Cider (Palo Alto) serving their platforms.
How is this category priced?
Published per-committer/tiers natively; free-plus-tiers for hardening (StepSecurity) and published tiers (Arnica); quotes across dedicated and absorbed lanes.
What attacks does pipeline security stop?
Poisoned pipelines, malicious actions/dependencies executing in CI, runner exfiltration, tampered builds, and stolen OIDC/cloud credentials the tradecraft behind modern supply-chain incidents. Coupling pipeline checks with container image scanning ensures malicious base layers don’t bypass execution guards.
What happened to Argon and Cider?
Acquired Argon into Aqua (2021), Cider into Palo Alto (2023); both sell inside their platforms now. Evaluate under current packaging.
Where should we start?
Push protection and action pinning this week; egress control on runners (Harden-Runner-class) next; pipeline discovery when you can’t name every workflow that can reach production which is most estates.
Conclusion
Native controls set the floor, StepSecurity guards the layer attackers actually use, and Cycode/Legit map the factory you’ve sprawled activate, harden, then discover.
Engaging top-tier penetration testing companies ensures build pipeline controls are rigorously audited against live exploit techniques.
Next step: pin your actions and filter runner egress before the next typosquatted dependency phones home.
