JNDI Injection Remote Code Execution in Apache Log4j2 (Log4Shell)

Apache Log4j2, an extremely widely used Java logging library, fails to protect its JNDI lookup feature against attacker-controlled JNDI-related endpoints (CWE-20, CWE-502), so crafted text processed by the logger causes the Java runtime to fetch and load attacker-supplied objects, leading to remote code execution. The flaw is triggered whenever attacker-controlled input reaches the logging API and is parsed for JNDI lookups, a pattern common in web servers and enterprise Java applications that log user-supplied fields such as headers or form values. Successful exploitation yields arbitrary code execution under the privileges of the affected application, giving attackers a foothold for lateral movement, data theft, and ransomware deployment. Any Java application or product that ships or bundles an affected Apache Log4j2 release is exposed, making this one of the most broadly deployed vulnerabilities ever disclosed. Exploitation is confirmed in the wild: CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2021-12-10 with known ransomware use, and EPSS assigns a 100% probability of exploitation within 30 days.

Do: Inventory all Java applications and dependencies for Apache Log4j2 and apply the vendor's patched updates, or remove affected assets from the network, as required by CISA's KEV catalog. Where updates are not yet available, use the temporary mitigations in CISA's ED-22-02 recommended-mitigation guidance, such as disabling message lookups, only until patches are applied. Prioritize internet-facing and business-critical systems and hunt for exploitation activity given known ransomware use.

CVE-2021-45046
Remote Code Execution in Apache Log4j2 via Incomplete Log4Shell Fix

CVE-2021-45046 is a remote code execution and information disclosure flaw in Apache Log4j2 (CWE-917) that resulted from an incomplete fix to CVE-2021-44228 (Log4Shell), leaving the Thread Context Lookup Pattern vulnerable in certain non-default configurations. It is triggered when an application logs attacker-controlled data using layouts or patterns that perform Thread Context (MDC) lookups, allowing crafted lookup expressions to be evaluated against untrusted input. A successful attacker can achieve remote code execution, or potentially information disclosure, on the affected service. Any deployment of Apache Log4j2 that relies on the affected non-default lookup configurations is exposed, which given Log4j2's ubiquity in Java applications and embedded products means a very large installed base. Exploitation is confirmed: the flaw is in CISA KEV (added 2023-05-01) with known ransomware use, and EPSS assigns a 100% probability of exploitation within 30 days.

Do: Upgrade Log4j2 to 2.17.0 or later per vendor instructions (or 2.12.3/2.3.1 for the legacy 2.12/2.3 branches), since the 2.16.0 fix was itself incomplete in some non-default configurations. Where upgrading is not immediately possible, remove the JndiLookup class from the Log4j2 jar or disable lookup processing, and audit applications and dependencies that bundle Log4j2 while following the CISA KEV required action to apply vendor updates.

Command Injection in TP-Link Archer AX21 Router Allows Remote Code Execution

CVE-2023-1389 is a command injection flaw (CWE-77) in TP-Link's Archer AX21 Wi-Fi 6 router that lets an attacker execute arbitrary operating-system commands on the device. It is triggered by sending crafted input to a remotely reachable service on the router, which passes attacker-controlled values to the device's shell without proper sanitization; the source data does not specify the vulnerable endpoint or exact affected firmware ranges. Successful exploitation yields remote code execution on the router, giving the attacker a foothold in the network where the router sits, from which they can pivot or abuse the device further. Any household or organization running an Archer AX21 router is affected, with the highest risk where the router's management interface is exposed to the internet. Unauthenticated Remote Code Execution in Oracle WebLogic Server via T3/IIOP

Oracle WebLogic Server contains a vulnerability that allows an unauthenticated attacker with network access to the server's T3 or IIOP endpoints to fully compromise the WebLogic instance (widely characterized as remote code execution). It is triggered simply by sending crafted T3 or IIOP protocol requests to a listening WebLogic server, requiring no credentials or user interaction. An attacker who succeeds gains the ability to run code on the application server host, providing a foothold in the application tier that can be used for lateral movement; CISA notes that ransomware use is currently unknown. Any organization running affected Oracle WebLogic Server versions is exposed, particularly where the T3/IIOP listeners are reachable from the internet or from less-trusted network zones. The flaw is being exploited in the wild: it was added to CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2023-05-01, and EPSS assigns it a 99.9% probability of exploitation within 30 days (100th percentile).

Do: Apply the Oracle Critical Patch Update that fixes CVE-2023-21839 (January 2023 CPU) to WebLogic Server per Oracle's instructions, prioritizing internet-facing systems given the KEV listing. Restrict network access to the T3 (default TCP 7001) and IIOP listeners to trusted hosts only, and check exposed servers for signs of compromise. Ransomware linkage is unknown, so treat all affected instances as patch-priority rather than only ransomware-targeted ones.

US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) added TP-Link, Apache, and Oracle vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog.

U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added the following three new issues to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog:

CVE-2023-1389 (CVSS score: 8.8) – TP-Link Archer AX-21 Command Injection Vulnerability. The CVE-2023-1389 flaw is an unauthenticated command injection vulnerability that resides in the locale API of the web management interface of the TP-Link Archer AX21 router. The root cause of the problem is the lack of input sanitization in the locale API that manages the router’s language settings. A remote attacker can trigger the issue to inject commands that should be executed on the device.

The vulnerability was first reported to ZDI during the Pwn2Own Toronto 2022 event. Working exploits for LAN and WAN interface accesses were respectively reported by Team Viettel and Qrious Security. 

The Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) threat-hunting team recently reported that the Mirai botnet attempting to exploit the CVE-2023-1389 vulnerability (aka ZDI-CAN-19557/ZDI-23-451, CVSS v3: 8.8) in TP-Link Archer AX21 Wi-Fi routers.

CVE-2021-45046 (CVSS score: 9.0) – Apache Log4j2 deserialization of untrusted data vulnerability. Apache Log4j2 contains a deserialization of untrusted data vulnerability due to the incomplete fix of CVE-2021-44228, where the Thread Context Lookup Pattern is vulnerable to remote code execution in certain non-default configurations.

CVE-2023-21839 (CVSS score: 7.5) – Oracle WebLogic Server Unspecified Vulnerability. Oracle WebLogic Server contains an unspecified vulnerability that allows an unauthenticated attacker with network access via T3, IIOP, to compromise Oracle WebLogic Server.

According to Binding Operational Directive (BOD) 22-01: Reducing the Significant Risk of Known Exploited Vulnerabilities, FCEB agencies have to address the identified vulnerabilities by the due date to protect their networks against attacks exploiting the flaws in the catalog.

Experts recommend also private organizations review the Catalog and address the vulnerabilities in their infrastructure.

CISA orders federal agencies to fix this flaw by May 22, 2023.
