Anthropic's Claude Code 2.1.277 now reads AGENTS.md project instruction files when no CLAUDE.md is present, built on its new mods system.
Thariq Shihipar announced that Claude Code version 2.1.277 adds AGENTS.md support: in folders without a CLAUDE.md file, Claude will check for and use AGENTS.md for project instructions. The feature is implemented as a built-in mod on top of Claude Code mods, an upcoming mechanism for customizing the Claude Code harness. The mod source is published so developers can build custom versions of project-instruction handling.

We're adding support for AGENTS.md to Claude Code. Starting today in version 2.1.277, if there is no CLAUDE.md in a folder, Claude will check for and use AGENTS.md. AGENTS.md support is built off of Claude Code mods, our upcoming way to customize the Claude Code harness.
