What Breaks Local Watermarks? A Robustness Benchmark for Local Invisible Image Watermarking

First systematic robustness benchmark of five local invisible image watermarking methods across 55 transformations finds all are vulnerable, with inpainting and geometric misalignment completely breaking payload…

The paper presents the first systematic robustness benchmark for local invisible image watermarks, covering 55 image transformations across signal distortions, coordinate alignment changes, indirect local edits, and direct watermark edits. It evaluates five methods: MaskWM, WAM, OmniGuard, TrustMark, and PixelSeal, all supporting localization natively or with minimal adaptation. Results show every method is vulnerable to some transformation; MaskWM offers the strongest payload recovery and localization but the lowest clean-image quality, and synchronization further improves its recovery under geometric transformations. Geometric misalignment and generative local edits such as inpainting and outpainting can completely impair payload recovery, while signal distortions are often tolerated.

Disentangling Representation Evolution in Transformers through Directional Decomposition

Decomposes transformer representation updates into parallel and perpendicular components, linking geometry to editing robustness and better pretraining.

The paper decomposes learned transformer updates into parallel and perpendicular components relative to the hidden state, finding substantial parallel components beyond the residual identity path across pretrained models. Targeted edits reveal exclude-self value-space parallel manipulation is more robust than residual-space or perpendicular alternatives, and perpendicular error separates compression methods more clearly. Applying full-aggregate parallel suppression during from-scratch pretraining lowers validation loss and improves downstream averages, with the value-space variant strongest. Code is released on GitHub.

DeepSeek-v4.1 Flash: Pushing the Limits of KV Cache Compression

DeepSeek-V4.1 Flash is a 552B-parameter multimodal MoE model with 1M-token context achieving 4x KV cache compression for long-horizon agent workloads.

A detailed analysis of the DeepSeek-V4.1 Flash technical report describes a 552B-parameter multimodal mixture-of-experts model supporting contexts up to 1 million tokens. Its Causal Encoder-Decoder (CED) architecture activates 8B parameters during prefill and 16B during decode, and reportedly delivers about 420 tokens/s. Joint optimization of architecture (CSA2 cross-layer compression), FP4 KV cache precision, and deployment strategy cuts runtime KV cache to roughly 1/4 and persistent KV cache to about 1/8 of DeepSeek-V4-Flash at the same sequence length, targeting storage and bandwidth bottlenecks in long-horizon agent serving. The author notes all DeepSeek-V4 Pro models were taken offline following the release.

How Model Growth, Recursion, and Boundary Operators Influence Scaling Exponents

Researchers show model growth via looped transformers improves scaling exponents; a 7.4B architecture matches GPT-3 13B with roughly 20x less compute.

The paper shows that architectural interventions, contrary to conventional wisdom, can modify pre-training scaling exponents and yield exponential performance gains with compute. Looped transformers with increasing loop counts provide a model growth mechanism; a 7.4B model-growth architecture matches GPT-3 13B on CORE with roughly 20x less compute, with efficiency gains that increase with scale. A boundary operator that normalizes and injects an earlier block also improves compute efficiency, and in data-constrained multi-epoch settings increasing loops with scale is compute-optimal.

AI made software development unrecognizable. Is cybersecurity next?

Opinion piece argues AI-driven shifts that transformed software development—agent-run SOCs, autonomous triage—will soon reshape cybersecurity operations and staffing.

A CSO Online analysis notes Google Cloud research found 90% of developers already use AI, while a March 2026 Federal Reserve paper found coder employment growth fell roughly 3% since ChatGPT's arrival. Gartner predicts 80% of organizations will run smaller, AI-augmented engineering teams by 2030. Security leaders from Contrast Security, Menlo Security and the Cloud Security Alliance expect agent-run SOCs, machine-speed containment and abundant vulnerability discovery, but caution that absorption capacity and autonomous production-environment validation remain bottlenecks.

The world must establish red lines for autonomous AI weapons

Opinion piece calls for international red lines on autonomous AI weapons after a Russian AI-guided drone autonomously killed three civilians in Zaporizhzhia.

The author urges enforceable international agreements governing autonomous weapon systems, citing a July 2026 incident where a Russian drone struck a gas station in Zaporizhzhia, killing three Ukrainian civilians. Ukrainian investigators found the drone carried an Nvidia Jetson Orin chip, and the onboard AI reportedly selected the specific target without a human making the final decision. The piece argues existing international humanitarian law lacks specific standards for weapons that independently select and engage targets, and points to UN and ICRC deliberations plus the Global Council for Responsible AI's red-line framework.

Google Research Introduces Retrieve-for-Train (R4T): An RL-Compiled Diffusion Retriever for 12× to 20× Faster Query Fan-Out

Google Research introduced R4T, an RL-trained fan-out pipeline distilled into a 53.9M-parameter diffusion retriever achieving 12x-20x faster query fan-out.

Google Research introduced Retrieve-for-Train (R4T), which trains a fan-out language model with GRPO plus soft PPO regularization, then distills query fan-out into a 53.9M-parameter diffusion transformer that generates all retrieval embeddings in a single non-autoregressive pass. A three-term reward (groundedness 0.6, diversity 0.2 via Vendi Score, alignment 0.2) prevents paraphrastic collapse and reward hacking during training. On the Polyvore dataset, Gemma3-4B R4T-FOLM averaged 49.1 versus 40.9 for Best-of-N, and the diffusion retriever cut fan-out latency from 1.46s to 0.07s at batch size 8, a consistent 12x-20x speedup over autoregressive methods.

Low-Rank Masking for Single-Server Matrix Multiplication

Researchers prove rank-r additive masks for outsourced matrix multiplication achieve maximal-correlation secrecy of at most q^-r, with a matching lower bound.

An arXiv paper analyzes statistical privacy for outsourcing matrix multiplication over a finite field to a single server using additive masks of rank at most r. Uniform rank-ball masks and products of independent uniform factors yield maximal-correlation secrecy bounded by q^{-r}, with encoding and decoding costing O(n^2 r) field operations. The authors prove an asymptotically matching lower bound for r=o(n), showing these samplers are optimal among input-independent additive masks even with secret invertible transformations. They also show every such mask requires delta approaching 1 in entry-level (epsilon, delta)-differential privacy for fixed field size.

Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography

Apple introduces Reference Image, hardware-backed verifiable photography on iPhone 18 Pro using sensor signing and Private Cloud Compute to counter AI-generated fakes.

Apple announced Reference Image, an opt-in camera mode debuting on the main sensor of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max that produces securely timestamped, verifiable photographs. The design splits into two phases: a secure digital negative created by cryptographically signing pixel data at the sensor immediately after capture (preventing injection or tampering), then developing that negative into a reference image. Private Cloud Compute handles processing without exposing image contents to anyone, including Apple, and fraudulent reference images can be revoked without revealing the photographer's identity. Apple positions the system as stronger than C2PA-based approaches, which sign metadata after capture, are vulnerable to editing-chain compromise, and can tie images to a device or individual.

What Breaks Under Pruning in Smart Homes, and When? Evaluating LLM Degradation Across Architectures and Task Complexity

Pruning study across four LLM architectures finds dense models degrade sharply on smart-home tool calling while MoE models tolerate far more.

Researchers systematically study pruning-induced degradation in smart-home tool calling across four LLMs spanning dense Transformer, dense hybrid, and mixture-of-experts architectures, combining depth, width, hybrid, and expert pruning methods, and evaluate over 19,500 instances from three datasets after post-pruning supervised fine-tuning. Dense models show narrow safe pruning regions followed by sharp degradation, while MoE models tolerate substantially more pruning. Pruning degrades grounded specificity (operation, device, argument, value) before schema-level intent, and aggressive dense pruning can induce systematic over-refusal.
