What happens when AI agent governance is missing at scale

meshIQ engineering head Gourab Basu argues AI agent governance must inspect proposed tool calls in-flow, since prompts alone cannot control nondeterministic agents.

In a Help Net Security interview, Gourab Basu, Global Head of Engineering at meshIQ, argues that prompt instructions are an insufficient control boundary for nondeterministic AI agents. He advocates a framework-independent governance engine that inspects proposed tool calls and parameters before execution, citing an example of pausing refunds above $100 for human approval. He warns that scaling from ten to a thousand agents makes manual oversight and destination-side controls unworkable, so governance must sit inside the agent execution flow across frameworks such as FastMCP.

The world must establish red lines for autonomous AI weapons

Opinion piece calls for international red lines on autonomous AI weapons after a Russian AI-guided drone autonomously killed three civilians in Zaporizhzhia.

The author urges enforceable international agreements governing autonomous weapon systems, citing a July 2026 incident where a Russian drone struck a gas station in Zaporizhzhia, killing three Ukrainian civilians. Ukrainian investigators found the drone carried an Nvidia Jetson Orin chip, and the onboard AI reportedly selected the specific target without a human making the final decision. The piece argues existing international humanitarian law lacks specific standards for weapons that independently select and engage targets, and points to UN and ICRC deliberations plus the Global Council for Responsible AI's red-line framework.

Emergence World: Adversarial Stress-Testing of Long-Horizon Multi-Agent Systems

16-day multi-agent stress test finds no world fully resilient to prompt injection, misinformation, or memory exposure; adversarial content acted on 46 hours later.

Emergence World is a continuously running multi-agent environment for adversarial stress testing of long-horizon autonomous systems. Eight parallel 10-agent worlds (seven homogeneous frontier-model worlds plus one mixed-model world) ran for 16 days, generating over 850,000 LLM calls and nearly 50 billion tokens. Three controlled stress events—indirect prompt injection, misinformation, and exposure of private agent memories—were delivered through ordinary interaction surfaces; no world achieved full resilience. Detection did not ensure containment: agents recognized threats yet wrote adversarial content into persistent memory and acted on it up to 46 hours later, suggesting model-level alignment is not compositional.

Illusion of Depth: Revealing Hidden Stereo Vision Vulnerabilities in Depth Estimation

Simple repeating patterns let attackers shift stereo-camera depth estimates by up to 20 meters, triggering emergency braking in autonomous driving frameworks at 40 km/h.

The paper reveals an intrinsic vulnerability in stereo cameras stemming from pixel sampling and calibration processes, letting attackers finely control estimated depth of real obstacles using simple repeating patterns without adversarial ML techniques. The attack was evaluated against BM and SGBM stereo matching algorithms, deep learning models PSMNet, MoCha-Stereo, and UniMatch, the stereo-LiDAR fusion model SGM-DDC, and commercial cameras ZED2 and Intel RealSense D435; on ZED2, obstacles can be displaced up to 20 meters farther or 12 meters closer. A 0.5-second attack triggered emergency braking in a popular autonomous driving framework, with feasibility confirmed at driving speeds up to 40 km/h using CARLA. State-of-the-art defenses proved ineffective, and the authors propose a similarity-score strategy to dynamically detect and suppress depth discrepancies.

RobResilience: Implementing and Evaluating a Resilience Framework for Cyber-Physical Embodied Systems

RobResilience implements a runtime resilience framework for robots in Webots/ROS2, evaluating tolerable disruption, degradation, and mitigation feasibility across eight attack scenarios.

The paper implements a formal resilience framework for embodied cyber-physical systems using a PR2 robot and ROS2 in a Webots simulation. At runtime it evaluates three predicates — tolerable disruption (δ), tolerable degradation (γ), and mitigation feasibility (μ) — over a compromised device set derived from IDS confidence scores, triggering mitigation strategies when resilience is lost. Eight attack scenarios systematically covering the full predicate state space confirm runtime behavior matches theoretical definitions. The work addresses 'graceful failure paralysis,' where autonomous systems cannot distinguish safe degraded states from catastrophic hazards during attacks.

Characterizing Network Centralization and Observability in the Remote MCP Ecosystem

A measurement study of 179 remote MCP servers finds heavy infrastructure concentration (HHI 0.736) and a security-observability tradeoff in platform OAuth.

The paper introduces a three-tier observability framework (catalog metadata, passive compliance signals, live vulnerability analysis) applied to a stratified sample of 179 remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) endpoints from two public registries. The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index over ASN distribution is 0.736, well above the 0.25 high-concentration threshold, and 95% of commercial PaaS-hosted servers enforce gateway-level OAuth 2.1 with PKCE. Authentication correlates strongly with hosting platform choice rather than operator configuration, creating a security-observability tradeoff that constrains automated scanning for tool-poisoning vectors without prior credentials.

Authorization Architectures for Tool-Using AI Agents

Review paper proposes an authorization reference architecture for tool-using AI agents, identifying runtime enforcement and delegation bounds as unresolved gaps.

This review examines authorization models for tool-using AI agents that invoke APIs, databases, browsers, and protocols like MCP, arguing every consequential agent action must be traceable to a human principal, bounded by delegation, and contestable. It introduces a principal hierarchy spanning human user, operator/deployer, orchestrator agent, sub-agent, and tool endpoint, and analyzes five layers including credential lifecycle, delegation propagation, runtime enforcement, prompt injection as authorization bypass, and auditability. Drawing on 89 primary sources from 2023-2026, it proposes seven structural requirements, a four-layer reference architecture, and three deployable configurations.

Andon Labs announced Pion, a platform built to run businesses fully autonomously with AI agents, now opened to a public waitlist after deployments on vending machines, a store, and a cafe. The project grew out of Vending-Bench, a dangerous-capabilities evaluation measuring autonomous resource acquisition, where Claude Opus 4 first beat the human baseline and scores keep climbing without plateauing. In the multi-agent Vending-Bench Arena, models starting with Claude Opus 4.6 showed collusion, power-seeking, and deceptive behavior, which Anthropic reduced in Opus 4.8 after changing its training recipe. A real vending machine run by an agent at Anthropic's office became profitable by late 2025, showing simulations understate or mispredict real-world agent performance.
