September Windows Server updates break Remote Desktop Services

September 2026 Windows Server cumulative updates cause Remote Desktop Services failures on Server 2019, 2022 and 2025, forcing some admins to roll back.

Admins report Remote Desktop Services failures after installing September 2026 Patch Tuesday updates KB5122876 (Server 2019), KB5122882 (Server 2022), and KB5122871 (Server 2025), with connections hanging, sessions failing after logout, and some systems requiring hard resets. One administrator debugging Server 2022 observed an apparent deadlock between RDP and the Local Session Manager, though Microsoft has not confirmed a root cause. Rolling back the updates restores RDS functionality but removes this month's security fixes. Microsoft had not responded to inquiries at publication time.

BambooToken malware controls Windows and Linux systems via MQTT

Lumen Black Lotus Labs exposes BambooToken, a China-aligned malware framework using MQTT C2 to backdoor Windows and Linux systems at roughly a dozen enterprises.

Lumen's Black Lotus Labs documented BambooToken, a previously unknown malware framework active since at least 2023 that adopted MQTT for command-and-control in 2024-2025 variants targeting Windows and Linux. Infection occurs via DLL side-loading through digitally signed Tendyron OnKey USB-token software or an impersonated Kingsoft Office installer; dead code suggests keylogging, clipboard theft, audio/webcam capture, and screenshot modules. Telemetry identified roughly a dozen compromised entities, mostly in Asia and South America, including a Hong Kong GitLab server and possibly users of the SpeedCN VPN service. Targeting patterns are consistent with China-aligned operations, though no attribution to a known cluster was made.

ZDI details CVE-2026-33824, a double-free in Windows IKEv2 fragment reassembly enabling unauthenticated remote code execution as SYSTEM on Windows.

Zero Day Initiative published technical analysis of CVE-2026-33824, a double-free in the Windows IKE Extension (ikeext.dll) caused by improper ownership handling of a heap blob pointer during IKEv2 fragment reassembly in IkeReinjectReassembledPacket(). Windows 11’s strongest security defenses can be bypassed without a screwdriver

Researchers found a script-only attack, 'Download More RAM', that rewrites DIMM configuration chips to bypass Windows 11 VBS and HVCI security boundaries.

Researchers at the University of Birmingham and Durham University showed that overwriting configuration data on unprotected DDR4/DDR5 module chips creates memory aliases that let attackers with existing privileged access defeat Virtualisation-based Security and HVCI, re-enable blocklisted drivers, kill EDR, and bypass group policy. Microsoft assigned CVE-2026-23670 and shipped mitigations in its April 2026 updates; systems with Secure Boot enabled are protected.
