Cisco UCS and UCS-Based Appliances UEFI Shell Secure Boot Bypass Vulnerability

Cisco disclosed a UEFI Secure Boot bypass in UCS servers and UCS-based appliances letting authenticated or physically present attackers execute unauthorized software.

Cisco published an advisory for a vulnerability in the UEFI Shell implementation of UCS servers and UCS-based appliances. Memory write commands remain available in the UEFI Shell while Secure Boot is enabled, allowing an attacker to modify UEFI memory and bypass validation checks to run unauthorized software. Exploitation requires either valid credentials for a user or admin account, or unauthenticated physical access to select the UEFI Shell boot option at boot time. The issue affects firmware boot integrity rather than the running operating system.

USN-8758-1: dracut vulnerability

Ubuntu patches dracut CVE-2026-15816, where a rogue adjacent-network DHCP server can inject root-executed commands during boot-failure handling.

Ubuntu security notice USN-8758-1 fixes CVE-2026-15816 in dracut, where messages written by the die() function to the emergency hook directory are not properly shell-quoted. An attacker on an adjacent network controlling a rogue DHCP server could exploit this to inject commands executing as root during boot-failure handling. Users should apply the patched dracut package.

ST Engineering iDirect iQ-Series Terminals (Update A)

CISA advisory details four flaws in ST Engineering iDirect iQ-Series VSAT terminals <=4.5.2.1, enabling device data theft, CSRF-driven reboots, and local privilege escalation.

CISA's Update A to ICSA-26-183-01 covers ST Engineering iDirect iQ-Series, 3315-Series and 9-Series terminals at firmware <=4.5.2.1, deployed across communications, defense, energy and transportation. CVE-2026-38059 exposes unauthenticated /api/identity and /api/ endpoints leaking serial number, DID, TPK, MAC address and firmware version, potentially enabling terminal impersonation; CVE-2026-38057 is a CSRF flaw letting an attacker force terminal reboots and satellite link loss via /api/reboot. CVE-2026-38056 enables local privilege escalation using the factory-configured technician account (CVSS 3.1 8.8, CVSS 4.0 9.4), and CVE-2026-38058 exposes crackable MD5-crypt root password hashes. All four flaws were reported to CISA by Ahmed Alqahtani of Aramco.

Microsoft Patch Tuesday for September 2026 — Snort rules and prominent vulnerabilities

Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday fixes 973 vulnerabilities, including 113 critical, with two Windows privilege-escalation bugs (CVE-2026-81963, CVE-2026-85880) exploited in the wild.

Microsoft's September 2026 security update addresses 973 vulnerabilities across its product lineup, 113 rated critical, of which 82 are remote code execution flaws. Two vulnerabilities are confirmed exploited in the wild: CVE-2026-81963, an elevation-of-privilege flaw in the Windows Update Stack (CVSS 7.8), and CVE-2026-85880, a heap-based buffer overflow in Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call (CVSS 7.8). Microsoft flags several bugs as more likely to be exploited, including a 9.8 RCE in Windows DNS Server (CVE-2026-69730), an 8.8 RCE in Windows Kerberos (CVE-2026-69676), and a 9.0 EoP in Spring Cloud Azure (CVE-2026-69854). Cisco Talos published accompanying Snort rules to detect exploitation attempts against the prominent flaws.
