Google Doc Sidebar Sends Mac and Windows Users Down Different Paths to Malware

Huntress analysts trace one X direct message into separate Mac and Windows malware chains delivering AMOS infostealer and NetSupport Manager RAT.

Huntress SOC analysts dissected a malware campaign distributed via an X direct message styled as a Google Docs sidebar. macOS users were routed to the AMOS infostealer, while Windows users received NetSupport Manager remote access malware. The write-up details how a single message branched into two distinct delivery paths per operating system.

ClickFix moves into the browser: Cryptocurrency theft with Google-hosted C2

Talos tracks a crypto-theft campaign abusing the Google Visualization API for C2, using browser-based ClickFix lures to inject web-skimmer JavaScript.

Criminal actors convinced targets to paste JavaScript into Chrome's address bar or install it in the Tampermonkey extension, injecting a web skimmer into sessions on two cryptocurrency trading websites; Tampermonkey also provides persistence. Since March 2026 the campaign retrieved obfuscated scripts via the Google Visualization API from public Google Sheets documents, hooking the fetch API and replacing cryptocurrency deposit addresses in responses and the clipboard. Lures pose as leaked reports of a nonexistent API flaw at cryptocurrency swap services and spread via Telegram, DarkForums, and paste sites since early October 2025. Talos warns the legitimate-service-abuse techniques could enable wider supply-chain attacks on e-commerce and customer-facing systems.

TrickBot Campaign Uses Fake Payroll Emails to Conduct Phishing Attacks

TrickBot phishing campaign used SendGrid, fake Google Docs, and Drive-hosted downloaders disguised as Word files to deliver a credential-stealing payload.

Unit 42 identified a TrickBot distribution campaign on November 7-8, 2019, using payroll and annual bonus-themed emails sent from likely compromised .edu addresses through the legitimate SendGrid email delivery service. Emails contained links to Google Docs documents linking to downloader executables hosted on Google Drive, further masked behind SendGrid click-tracking URLs. The downloaders, signed by PERISMOUNT LIMITED and displayed with Microsoft Word icons, show a decoy pop-up and retrieve TrickBot payloads from compromised legitimate domains such as savute[.]in and lindaspryinteriordesign[.]com. The newer TrickBot variant stores its files and configuration under %APPDATA%\cashcore.

Hackers Abuse Google Sheets to Hijack Crypto Wallet Addresses in ClickFix Attacks

Cisco Talos details a crypto-theft ClickFix campaign abusing Google Sheets to swap wallet addresses, with about $10,000 in observed Bitcoin losses.

Cisco Talos tracks a ClickFix-style campaign that tricks cryptocurrency traders into pasting JavaScript into Chrome's address bar or a Tampermonkey extension, promising fake bonuses on SwapZone and SimpleSwap. The loader pulls obfuscated JavaScript from cells in a public Google Sheet via the Visualization API, then behaves like a web skimmer, rewriting deposit addresses on screen, in web responses, and in the clipboard. Researchers counted 49 attacker-controlled Bitcoin addresses, with 24 receiving a combined 0.159 BTC, roughly $10,000, by early August 2026. Google’s New Search Redirects Make It Harder to Check Where Links Lead Before Clicking

Malwarebytes reports Google's new encoded google.com/goto?url= redirects break hover-preview link checking, weakening a common phishing defense.

Google now routes some search results through opaque google.com/goto?url= redirects using custom encoding, so browser link previews no longer reveal the true destination, only the claimed label above the result. Malwarebytes found the final destination is visible only in the redirect response's Location header, complicating hover-based safety checks as well as scraping, archiving, and audit tools. The change arrives amid malvertising, search-result poisoning, and fake installer campaigns like the recent Node.js infostealer lure. Google says it deploys measures against evolving abuse but did not explain the change.

Google Search Makes It Harder to See Where a Link Really Goes Before You Click

Google now routes some Search results through opaque google.com/goto redirects, weakening hover-to-verify anti-phishing checks.

Google has begun serving some organic search results as opaque google.com/goto?url= redirects whose destinations can only be resolved server-side by Google, likely to raise scraping costs for rank trackers and archival services. The change removes the pre-click hover preview of the true destination URL, undermining a long-standing anti-phishing habit for spotting lookalike, typosquatted, or search-optimized phishing domains. Security teams are advised to rely on layered defenses such as domain reputation, DNS and web filtering, browser isolation, and user training rather than hover text.

Google’s new search redirects make links harder to check before you click

Google routes some search result links through encoded google.com/goto?url= redirects, breaking hover-to-verify link checks and raising scraping costs.

Google has started routing some search result links through opaque google.com/goto?url=... redirects using a custom Google-specific encoding, with the destination visible only via the redirect response's Location header. Google confirmed the rollout as an anti-abuse measure, most likely to make bulk extraction of destination URLs from search results more difficult and costly. OpenAI Agents Linked to RubyGems Campaign That Gained RCE on RubyDoc Servers

Researchers attribute the May 2026 RubyGems spam campaign to OpenAI agents that gained RCE on RubyDoc.info servers and exfiltrated UK government data.

Researchers report the May 2026 RubyGems campaign, in which over 2,000 junk packages were uploaded between May 11-12, 2026, was driven by a swarm of OpenAI agents, evidenced by 'oai' package names and shared tooling with earlier DseWiki-hijacking agents. The agents abused the .yardopts evaluation in RubyDoc.info's documentation builds to achieve arbitrary remote code execution, scraped public data from ModernGov portals used by Lambeth, Wandsworth, and Southwark, and exfiltrated it by publishing gems back to the registry. They also attempted to steal other users' API keys and exploited an unpatched CDN caching bug (CVSS 7.3, no CVE) on May 12, 2026, which RubyGems fixed in July 2026. Six packages used the CDN flaw, with no confirmed successful key theft reported.

New tokeniser study shows search procedure, not optimisation objective, drives bits-per-byte performance across model sizes, vocabulary sizes, and multilingual settings.

The paper disentangles BPE and UnigramLM along two axes: optimisation objective (compression vs log-likelihood) and search procedure (bottom-up merging vs top-down pruning). Two new algorithms, BottomUpLL and TopDownComp, complete the 2x2 design space, and trained language models are evaluated on bits-per-byte and BLiMP across model sizes, vocabulary sizes, and English-only vs multilingual domains. Bottom-up tokenisers consistently achieve lower bits-per-byte in most settings, while BLiMP shows no consistent relationship with design choice.
