Hackers Actively Exploiting Gitea n-day RCE Vulnerability in the Wild to Hijack Instances

Chinese-speaking Red Heron actors mass-exploit Gitea n-day RCE CVE-2026-60004 to steal source code, credentials, and pivot into victim networks.

Acronis Threat Research Unit reports active in-the-wild exploitation of Gitea RCE CVE-2026-60004 (CVSS 9.8, versions 1.17-1.27.0, fixed in 1.27.1) by a Chinese-speaking actor dubbed Red Heron. The actor scanned 1,386 Gitea servers across seven countries, held a separate list of 477 Taiwan-based targets, and confirmed victims in Canada, Argentina, Taiwan, the US, and Sri Lanka. Intrusions deployed the JITTERLY Linux implant with the SIXZUT LD_PRELOAD rootkit, stole password hashes and SSH keys, and in one case gained root admin access to a three-node Proxmox cluster.

The PoC was tested on Windows 11 25H2 and Windows Server 2025 with a 100% success rate, and Windows 10 is also vulnerable though not supported by the PoC; the flaw may also leak 8 bytes of memory. Microsoft's MSRC had criticized the researcher's repeated uncoordinated disclosures, including YellowKey (BitLocker bypass), GreenPlasma, and LegacyHive (User Profile Service LPE).

Serial Microsoft 0-day hunter drops yet another Defender exploit

Researcher Nightmare Eclipse released ShieldCrash, a Microsoft Defender zero-day PoC that bypasses September patches and reads files as SYSTEM.

ShieldCrash works on Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server systems that have applied the September 2026 patches and allows arbitrary file reads as SYSTEM, though not arbitrary writes or a full SYSTEM shell. Microsoft has not said when it plans to patch the issue. The researcher recently also released zero-days affecting CrowdStrike Falcon (FalconFlank), Kaspersky endpoint antivirus (HardBreacher, patched), and Gen Digital's Avast (PrettyPrague).

Adobe Commerce Zero-Day Exploited to Backdoor Online Stores

Sansec found attackers exploiting an Adobe Commerce/Magento zero-day (StyleSmuggler) since September 4 to deploy Rust backdoors on online stores.

Threat actors are actively exploiting a zero-day RCE in Adobe Commerce and Magento 2.4.7-2.4.9, injecting PHP code via generated failure reports and executing it through Magento's payment-failure email, with no user interaction required. Exploitation began September 4 and succeeds even against stores running the July and August 2026 patches; the Rust backdoor disguises itself as kworker/u:8:0 or fc-cache and hides C&C communication inside fake NTP replies. Adobe's September 8 Patch Tuesday updates may not include a StyleSmuggler fix.

Dynamic analysis of the UPX-packed, statically linked x86-64 sample (SHA-256 63be5f38...d35e) in an isolated Ubuntu 24.04 VM on Proxmox showed it renamed its process via prctl(PR_SET_NAME), killed a filesystem-monitoring process, and opened a TCP listening socket while surviving processes posed as php-fpm or PostgreSQL-like workers. Chinese espionage groups swarm to exploit triple-link chain of zero-days

At least four China-aligned espionage groups chained three zero-days in Chromium browsers and Windows ALPC for espionage since late August.

Proofpoint observed at least four state-aligned threat groups, starting with TA412/Violet Typhoon/APT31 on August 28, chaining three zero-days in the 'BlueMoon' exploit chain targeting Chrome, Chromium-based browsers and Microsoft Windows. The chain includes RCE flaws in Chromium's JavaScript engine (CVE-2026-85046, CVE-2026-87491) and a Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call privilege-escalation zero-day (CVE-2026-85880), enabling sandbox code execution, sandbox escape and system privileges. APT31 delivered the chain via phishing links to NGOs, mining and commodity trading firms in the US, installing a browser extension disguised as Google Gemini to surveil activity and steal credentials. Other groups (UNK_LateNight, UNK_DoubleCheck, UNK_QuietRacket) targeted US aerospace, Vietnamese manufacturing, and Indonesian and Singaporean organizations; fewer than 20 victims were directly observed but the true count is likely higher.

Magento StyleSmuggler zero-day exploited to deploy Linux backdoor

StyleSmuggler zero-day in Magento and Adobe Commerce is actively exploited in the wild to deploy a Rust-based Linux backdoor; fix not yet released.

A zero-day dubbed StyleSmuggler affecting all versions of Magento and Adobe Commerce is being actively exploited, with the first observed incident on September 4 on a fully patched site. The exploit injects PHP code via Magento's template system through a fake 'failed-payment' email to achieve code execution, installing a Rust-based backdoor disguised as kworker/u:8:0 or fc-cache with a 30-minute cron job for persistence. The backdoor communicates via TLS/WebSockets or UDP port 123 masquerading as NTP traffic, checks TracerPid to detect tracing, and can receive remote commands. Adobe confirmed it is working on a fix with no timeline; Sansec recommends disabling GraphQL as mitigation and monitoring for suspicious cron entries and kworker or fc-cache processes. Magento is installed on more than 160,000 websites, including 14,000 of the top 1 million sites.

GeoServer Zero-Day Targeted in Active Exploitation Attempts, Can Lead to RCE

A CVSS 9.8 SQL injection zero-day in GeoServer's PostGIS datastore enables RCE and drew active exploitation; fixes shipped in versions 3.0.1, 2.28.5, 2.27.6.

A SQL injection flaw in GeoServer's jsonArrayContains function within the GeoTools PostGIS datastore (GHSA-mqjf-5f49-2fjh, CVSS 9.8) was disclosed August 12, 2026, and saw hundreds of exploitation attempts within hours per watchTowr. An attacker-controlled value is interpolated into a PostgreSQL jsonb_path_exists() expression without escaping; with superuser or pg_execute_server_program privileges it escalates to OS command execution via WFS 1.0. GeoServer released versions 3.0.1, 2.28.5, and 2.27.6, and the flaw is a regression of CVE-2023-25158.
